Do Movie Posters Ever Change Your Mind?

You've probably read by now that Dane Cook has decried the poster for his upcoming rom-com, My Best Friend's Girl, crafting a detailed list on his MySpace page of everything wrong with it. Cook is mostly offended by what he believes to be a poor Photoshop job that results in him looking like a schmuck.

Yet, he also expresses concern that "the wrong poster sends the wrong audience into the theater," a lesson he has purportedly learned the hard way. Which, of course, makes one wonder what kind of audience Cook originally thought would view this movie, and in what drastic ways the audience has now changed based on this poster.

Sidenote: I am seriously enjoying BestWeekEver's version of a poster for the movie that Cook might be prouder to display.

First Look: Dane Cook, Kate Hudson in My Best Friend's Girl

Oh, wow, what have we here? Dane Cook playing a gross jerk again - only this time, he gets paid for it. And, in the end, it looks like he gets Kate Hudson. The trailer for My Best Friend's Girl (previously titled Bachelor No. 2), in which Cook plays a guy who dates a girl (Kate Hudson) with the intention of acting so heinously she's driven back to the arms of Cook's buddy (Jason Biggs), leaves quite a bit to be desired. It looks generic and not particularly amusing, but maybe it will deliver something fresh when we see it in its entirety? Hey, I can give it the benefit of the doubt (especially since the bit with Alec Baldwin is pretty funny). Judgment day will come September 19 when the movie comes out. The facts:
Kate Hudson has been cast in the comedy Bachelor No. 2, a movie that "revolves around a man who is hired by men who have been dumped to take their ex-girlfriends out on nightmare dates, thereby convincing the women to return to their boyfriends. But trouble arises when [the man]'s character is hired to take out the ex-girlfriend of his best pal."

The bad news:
Dane Cook is Hudson's romantic co"star."

Sigh.
Poor Kate. I guess a girl's gotta make a buck somehow.

Jake Breaks Out His Spring Staples For a Lunch

Jake Gyllenhaal joined a friend for lunch yesterday at LA's Angelini Osteria restaurant. Jake's been spotted all over Hollywood in recent days following his appearance at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony. He had the honor of presenting best film nominee My Week With Marilyn, which stars his friend, and best actress winner, Michelle Williams.

Jake seems to be enjoying the sunny California weather, but January often sees him bundling up in Utah. He's been a regular among the celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival in years past, having premiered films like Donnie Darko and The Good Girl there. Jake doesn't have movies to screen this year, but his next picture to hit the big screen is cop drama End of Watch with Michael Pena and Anna Kendrick.

Since CBS released its new sitcom 2 Broke Girls, in which actress Beth Behrs plays a recently humbled heiress, Caroline, who moves to Brooklyn to hide out after her father loses their family fortune in a Ponzi scheme.

Caroline winds up living with her perpetually poor fellow waitress, Max, played by Kat Dennings, and the two hatch a plan to save their wages and start a cupcake business.

Recession-era cupcake businesses have been all the rage lately (see: Bridesmaids), but shows addressing personal finances - or lack thereof - with humor and honesty is something we don’t see very often. Caroline and Max manage to plan for their future while hustling for their present - and survive on a shoestring with admirable grace. We love that these characters live richly, even on a tight salary: After all, that's what LearnVest is all about.

And, of course, any show where the leading ladies discuss interest rates is right up our alley.

Amy Adams was in the midst of a busy award season when we were able to visit the LA set of The Muppets in January. It was just one day before she dressed up to attend the Golden Globes, but Amy was more focused on spending her between-scenes time with her fiancé, Darren Le Gallo, and their daughter Aviana. Jason Segel spoke about writing and getting the Muppets movie made, while Amy was happy to chat about her latest connection to the Disney family. She also shared about the honor of being Jason's first choice for the role of Mary, how she picks projects, and who would win in a Meryl Streep and Ms. Piggy showdown. Amy said:

On her friends wanting to visit the set: "I have a lot of friends [come by] - not just for the Muppets, but for Jason. I have a lot of girls who really like Jason. There have been a lot of visitors. I have visitors today. It’s exciting because a lot of people grew up loving the Muppets and it’s nice for them to get to see it."
On what made her decide to sign on: "[Shooting in LA] is a huge benefit for me having just had a baby. I can be at home and be working with the Muppets, which is such a family-friendly set and family-friendly film. She is here today. I’m sure you’ve seen me flying around with her. That is a huge plus. Also, just to get to introduce her to the Muppets is very fun. She was interacting with Walter today. It was the first time she had ever interacted with any of the Muppets. So that was cool."
On who's tougher to act with - Miss Piggy or Meryl Streep? "I have to say that I can’t win in that answer because I am working with Ms. Piggy. So if I say, 'Meryl Streep,' I have to see Ms. Piggy tomorrow and it will be like, 'So I heard . . . ' So I’m just going to plead the fifth. I know Meryl will be OK, but I don’t want to cross Ms. Piggy."
On being flattered by being Jason's top choice: "I didn’t know the extent to which he had thought of me. I knew for him to send a personal invite to be a part of it and getting Kermit to be a part of it - I knew that he was serious about it. I didn’t know that he specifically had me in mind until after I was on set. It’s a lot pressure and I didn’t know!"

Jane Fonda doesn’t lie about her age. She’s 73 and happier than she’s ever been. That’s saying a lot when you consider her 20s: sex symbol and rising star in Hollywood. And her 30s: Academy Award winner, blockbuster romantic heroine, and controversial activist. And her 40s: exercise guru, comedienne, and movie mogul. These days, she’s a mom, a grandma, a cancer-survivor, a best-selling author, an ex-wife times three, and a girlfriend. She’s also a sexpert. In her new book Prime Time, a memoir-style self-help guide to embracing your “third act," Fonda gets frank about life in your 70s. Her book offers financial advice, funeral-planning straight talk, mental health and exercise, and lots of sex. We only had a few minutes with the living legend, so we went straight for the last item on the list.

Shine: Is life really better in your 70s?
Jane Fonda: As I was going through my 60s and entering my 70s, I realized I was happier than I’d ever been. I didn’t expect to live this long, much less to be happier; I wanted to know if this was unique to me. For this book, I spent four years interviewing doctors and researching this very subject. I came to understand a majority of people in their 60s and over feel the same way.

S: So you're saying those of us in our 30s can look forward to a better time?
JF: My life is much better now. My "good old days" were really more so-so old days. The 30s and 40s are very hard. If you have kids, you have figure who you are in relation to them and to your husband. I was not a very good parent, I suffered eating disorders and I had a hard time in my marriage. The 40s, you have perimenopause and you don’t know who you are anymore. In my research, I discovered that in your 30s and 40s you’re still experiencing the effects of an unhappy childhood. But an unhappy childhood has very little effect on you at an older age.

4 Ways to Date Yourself and Why It's Important

Plenty of folks who see someone out alone have a reaction of sadness and pity. And while there are certainly people out there who could use another friend, I have a lofty theory on these "loners" that manages to blow my friends' minds more often than not: maybe that girl is choosing to hang out by herself.

Those of us who relish "me-time" will agree that in order to really know yourself, it's integral to spend time alone. Before you can be a great member of a group, or a solid counterpart in a relationship, you've got to know who you are, what you like, and be confident with both. Taking yourself out on a date doesn't make you lame or weird, it means you're an independent lady confident in your own company. And I know you'd be hard pressed to find something sexier, or healthier, than that. Not sure where to begin on this one? Here are four fun ideas for taking yourself on a good old-fashioned date.

Catch a flick. There's something pretty awesome about the collective movie experience, but instead of dragging your man to a film he's not into, or bringing a close girlfriend along for the ride, consider going all by yourself. It's a really interesting experience. One of the best parts? You don't have to share your large tub of theater popcorn and you can put on as much butter as you like.
Grab dinner by yourself. This is one of the hardest ones for people to do since going out for food is typically associated as being a social activity. But don't knock it until you've tried it. Sitting by yourself at a nice meal can be really relaxing and enjoyable. Be sure not to cop out by being attached to your cell! I know sometimes I grab it to look like I'm doing something or I have someplace important to be. Fight the urge. The feelings and thoughts we try to hide from when we constantly engage with others are exactly what we're trying to bring to the surface here. Chow down on good food and good old-fashioned solitude.
Hang at home purposefully. Hanging on your own next Friday night should not be your last resort for plans. Maybe you've had a rough week at work or you could use a little TLC. Instead of heading out to a crowded bar and looking for attention and affection, shower yourself in love. Relinquish the hassle of running around, catch up on your TiVo, drink some vino, and order in from your very favorite take-out spot. Sounds like a perfect night to me.
Picnic it up. Pack your favorite grub, bring your iPod, and enjoy the great outdoors. Instead of looking around or worrying what people are thinking about your solo excursion, plan ahead for activities you love but unfortunately don't make time for. It sounds like you have a great day in store!

Buzz Battle: Readers Take Sides on Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed is shaping up to be the year's most divisive romantic comedy - and I'm not talking Team Darcy vs. Team Rachel. After posting our movie review, video review, and poll on whether you want to see the sequel Something Blue, many of you expressed a love for the movie, while a crop of others disliked it. Read on to see the arguments of those who adored the movie, along with those from folks who couldn't get behind the film.

User jannam: "I recommend it!! I saw it already and I LOVED it. I don't understand why it's getting such bad reviews. I thought it was hilarious (mostly due to Krasinski, who is adorable in this movie). Anyone that read the book and liked it, will like this movie!"
User lilkimbo's counterpoint: "I thought the book was OK, so I went into the movie with an open mind. Anyway, I was disappointed. Goodwin and Egglesfield didn't have much chemistry, Rachel came off as unlikable and boring, the clothing was even comically bad. (And yes, multiple people I was with made comments about this.) In the book I was conflicted, but in the movie I really had trouble rooting for Rachel. I actually found myself liking Darcy more. Friends who hadn't read the book were annoyed that it was obvious we were supposed to be rooting for Rachel, but they liked Darcy better. Sure, Darcy is self-centered, but the movie almost made it seem like confidence and assertiveness are reprehensible qualities."
