Movie Preview: My Kid Could Paint That

The description for this documentary caught my eye back in January when My Kid Could Paint That screened at Sundance. The film examines the school of thought that instead of being "genius," abstract art is really a sham, simple art that could easily be done by a child.

Four-year-old Marla started making paintings that were soon being compared to Picasso and other respected artists. "60 Minutes" aired a piece casting doubt on Marla's work, and her family's reputation changed instantly. Her work started selling for thousands of dollars.

Soon, however, this ability of Marla's was called into question: Is she an ordinary child just making paintings that are being misinterpreted by art critics? Or is she truly a child prodigy? And why are we so hungry for child geniuses?

The trailer for My Kid Could Paint That has hit the Web and it looks like an intriguing documentary. The movie comes out October 5 in limited release, so to watch the preview, read more

2007 Sundance Film Festival: Documentaries

The Sundance Film Festival has been in full swing for a week, and everyone seems to be having a grand old time out there in Park City, Utah. I've highlighted some of the comedies, dramas, and dramedies that look most promising at this year's festival. Now let's face reality and take a peek at some of the documentaries that have piqued my interest.

My Kid Could Paint That
This movie looks genius, and yet, it causes me to examine the very definition of "genius." It follows a middle-class family in Binghamton, New York, that was shot to international stardom when 4-year-old Marla was billed as a child prodigy for her "abstract expressionist" paintings. The family raked in $300,000 for the paintings, and Marla was heralded as a young Pollock or even Picasso. Then, "60 Minutes" aired a piece casting doubt on Marla's work, and the family's reputation changed instantly. The documentary examines what we consider art, and why our society is transfixed by (and hungry for) child prodigies.

Two more, so read more

War/Dance
In the war zone of northern Uganda, the rebel force called the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) have made life terrifying, as children live in fear of being abducted by the LRA looking to fill their ranks. This documentary focuses on the journey of three children - Dominic, Rose, and Nancy - as their school in the Patonga refugee camp makes its way to the finals of Uganda's music and dance competition. Song and dance are used to capture the strength of the human spirit to rise above incredible brutality and grief.

Hear and Now
Apparently, this documentary received a standing ovation at Sundance, and I can easily see why. Paul and Sally Taylor are a 65-year-old married couple who have shared a satisfying life together, though they haven't heard a minute of it. The two are deaf and have raised a family and been active members of the deaf community. At 65, however, they both decide to undergo a controversial medical procedure to restore their hearing. The film explores how the Taylors' lives change from this procedure: what it means for their relationship, their place in the deaf community, and their sense of identity.

Buzz Book Club: Holidays on Ice

Hello, Buzz Book Club readers! 'Tis the season to read a book together, and my December selection was a pretty easy choice: David Sedaris's Holidays on Ice. I know we just completed a memoir last month, but I couldn't help myself with this one. I know I could use some holiday-themed levity from one of America's foremost humorists as I cram to get my work, shopping, and decorating done in this busy season (less than three weeks, people!). And because we're all so busy this time of year, this book also stood out because it's so tiny.

The New York Times explains that this is the little book that brought Sedaris's "jaundiced, bah-humbug sensibility to prominence a decade ago," and I think viewing holiday mayhem through his eyes will be fun in the weeks to come. There are a couple of editions of the book out now, and while the re-release (pictured here) comes with new essays, I'm going to stick to discussing just the stories in the original - there are cookies to bake and gifts to wrap, after all.

For those of you new to my book club format, here's how it works: I announce a new book each month. Every week I suggest chapters to complete by the next post (which, in this case, will go up every Friday in December). In these weekly Book Club posts, I'll posit a few discussion-provoking questions for you to respond to in the comments section.

To find out what Holidays on Ice is all about and to get the first assignment, read more.

The synopsis for Holidays on Ice reads:
"David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed."

The first assignment: Read the first story, "SantaLand Diaries." We'll discuss this essay next Friday, Dec. 12.

The Office Rundown: Episode Eight, "Business Trip"

This episode of The Office should just be called The Andy Show - he gets all the best lines and does a hilarious job delivering them. And I love the teaming up of Andy and Oscar. So unlikely, and thus, so very funny. The two of them accompany Michael on an "international" business trip to Canada (where they meet "Concierge Marie," played by Reno 911!'s Wendi McLendon-Covey!). Meanwhile, back at the office, Jim's excitement over Pam's return to Scranton ends abruptly when he learns some news.

To check out some of my favorite moments and share your own, read more.

Michael has Meredith pretend that she is from Abu Dhabi. "I am ashamed at your naked face, I must cover it with my jacket." He throws his jacket on her head. "You are now sexy in your culture."

Jim explains, "Pam comes back from New York next week and everyone here has just been so excited for me. And involved. And intrusive. And weird." Case in point: Kevin smacks Jim's butt!

Andy tells Angela he'll be good while in Canada, "Meaning I will try to get other dudes laid."

Ryan says he'll move into Kelly's area once Pam gets back. "This looks like where I'll probably do my push-ups every day." Kelly swears "that door is closed" and then makes out with Ryan on her desk.

Yay for guest star Wendi McLendon-Covey ("Concierge Marie")! She is one of my favorite funny ladies.

Michael: "A concierge is the Winnipeg equivalent of a geisha. This is a woman who has been trained in the fine art of fanciness and pleasure. And when you meet one, it is intoxicating. Just what the doctor ordered."

Pam tells Jim that she failed a class and has to stay in New York for another 12 weeks! Also: Seeing Pam cry makes me want to cry.

I'm just amazed by all the great moments Andy has this episode! To name a few:
"Come on it's Dandy Dale and Foppy McGee over there."
"Mademoiselle! Beer me dos Long Island iced teas, por favor. Bad decision in a glass."
"A guy needs intercourse!"
"You will thank me when they spank thee."
"You know, it's true what they say: Long Island iced teas are way stronger in Canada."

The pairing up of Oscar and Andy in a bar is genius. Oscar wonders what Andy could possibly see in Angela, to which Andy replies,"I see through a hard exterior to a little jelly in the middle. She is teaching me to be a better person. She's working really hard on that. And she has the softest skin I've ever seen, and I can't wait to have sex with her."

Oscar's drunk! And totally silly! Oscar tells Andy to call Angela and ask what is wrong with her, and when Angela picks up he blurts out "Why won't you do Andy?" before dissolving into giggles.
Andy: "That's Oscar and he wants to know why you won't do me and I think it's a valid question."
Angela: "Are you drunk?"
Andy: "This is Andy Bernard. . . I want to take you to sex school!"

Then we hear Dwight whisper, "Who is that, Monkey?"

Dwight says he's not surprised that Pam failed a class at art school, and insults Pam's painting of the office building, saying the shadows are coming from two different directions. "What? Are there two suns? Uh, last I checked that's not an office in the Andromeda galaxy!"

When Oscar thanks him for trying to hook him up. "You kidding me? It's what I do. You get the whole nine 'nards.'"

Ryan tells Kelly she needs to break up with Darryl, and he even typed out a breakup text message for her to send Darryl. They press Send together. Darryl responds saying it's cool. Kelly is thrilled but Ryan is totally deflated now that the danger of Darryl being angry and jealous is gone.

Andy says Angela is "so pissed" that she's taking them back to first base, which means Andy gets to kiss her forehead.

Oscar and Andy have bonded. Andy offers a chest bump and a "bro hug" before Oscar shakes his hand.
Andy: "I had to go all the way to Canada to get to know a guy who sits 20 feet away from me. And he's delightful!"

Wow, Michael tells David Wallace (right to his face, "over the phone") that sending Holly away was a sucky thing to do before hanging up on him. Then Michael claims that David Wallace shows a lot of respect for him when he doesn't fire him.

Pam comes back! Her little speech at the end is so sweet.

Thoughts on "Business Trip"?

Source

NBC's Fall Schedule: My Take

NBC started off this year's Upfronts more than a month early this afternoon, kicking off the frenzy of Fall TV announcements with its no-frills presentation (which took the form of either a PowerPoint presentation or a conference call, depending on where you were). While the format of the announcements wasn't thrilling, the content will give us much to speculate about over the next few months. Here are some of my initial thoughts:

I think Save Friday Night Lights said this one best: Touchdown! The Friday Night Lights/DirecTV deal had been sounding like a sure thing for a while, but it's nice to know for sure that the Panthers will live to play another season. There are more details over here about how the partnership will work, but the short version is that episodes will start airing on DirecTV in October and then be broadcast at 9 p.m. on Fridays on NBC starting in February. I wonder, though, if people will actually wait for the NBC episodes or if BitTorrent and YouTube will be the real beneficiaries here.

The spinoff of The Office is . . . mysterious, to say the least. NBC issued a separate press release about the show, but it's quite vague: "Audiences will follow another comic journey, complete with new faces and new locations, but with the same unique sense of humor and brand of quality from Daniels and his creative team." NBC entertainment head Ben Silverman said they were keeping a lid on things because Office fans are so rabid; when asked if characters from the main show would appear on the spinoff, he responded: "There's a huge ensemble on The Office right now . . . " Come on, man. A title? A setting? Anything?

More on that: Back in October, most of you thought a spinoff would be a bad idea. Now that it's happening, how do you feel? What's your dream setting for the show? Have you changed your mind about which characters it should focus on? Best suggestion I've heard so far: the warehouse.

Also, it's worth mentioning that the big headline from last Spring's NBC Upfront was a Heroes spinoff, and, well, we know how that turned out.

My gal Liberty is wondering what you think of NBC's plan to put special "Weekend Update" segments on the air on Thursdays leading up to the Presidential election in November. There certainly should be enough political mockery to go around by then.

Some other thoughts, plus the full night-by-night schedule, so just read more.

Most of the new shows NBC announced had been rumored for a while - we first heard about Kath and Kim way back at the TV critics' press tour last summer, and once news of a project starring Christian Slater was out there, how could it not become a series? So, no big surprises there.

Knight Rider: the series? Do you think this has any chance of succeeding? Oh, and if you were waiting on the edge of your seat to find out: Yes, Val Kilmer will return as the voice of KITT.

Silverman tried so hard to give us the warm fuzzies: NBC shows might involve losers or bad guys, but they're all just people who really want to do the right thing! Gotta give the guy props for finding a connection between Ian McShane as an evil king and the weight-loss mavens of The Biggest Loser.

I can't tell you how many times Silverman used the words "ER" and "last season" in close proximity to each other. Get it? The show will be back - but only one more time. We promise!

There's officially no Scrubs on NBC's schedule, so I have to assume that means ABC gets it, for sure.

Your thoughts? Here's a full schedule of the shows for both Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 - though, as always, this information is subject to change. New show descriptions follow below:

New show descriptions (all from NBC's press release):

My Own Worst Enemy - Henry Spivey (Christian Slater, Bobby) is a middle-class efficiency expert living a humdrum life in the suburbs with a wife, two kids, a dog, and a minivan. Edward Albright is an operative who speaks 13 languages, runs a four-minute mile, and is trained to kill with his teeth. Henry and Edward are polar opposites who share only one thing in common - the same body. When the carefully constructed wall between them breaks down, Henry and Edward are thrust into unfamiliar territory where each man is dangerously out of his element. My Own Worst Enemy explores the duality of a man who is literally pitted against himself. And it raises the question: who can you trust when you can't trust yourself?

Knight Rider - On the heels of NBC's hit movie, the iconic 1980s television classic comes roaring back to life as an updated drama series showcasing the new customized KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) Ford Mustang. As the sequel resumes, KITT is absolutely the coolest car ever created: its supercomputer capable of hacking almost any system; its weapons systems efficient; and its body - thanks to its creator's work and nanotechnology - is capable of actually shifting shape and color. It is the ultimate car -- and someone will be willing to do anything to obtain it. Knight Rider stars Justin Bruening, Deanna Russo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, and Bruce Davison.

Crusoe - Based on the legendary novel by Daniel Defoe, this is the tale of Robinson Crusoe. A young man leaves his true love to embark on an adventure - only to end up shipwrecked on a remote tropical island for 28 years, completely detached from the life he once knew. His desire to return to his wife and his strong and unlikely friendship with Friday are the only things that keep him sane. While stranded, Crusoe encounters enemies and braves the elements. Equal parts MacGyver, Castaway, and Pirates of the Caribbean, this series is an inspirational tale of survival rife with action and comedy.

Kings - Kings is an inspiring exploration of the timeless David vs. Goliath struggle. The show is set in a modern metropolis under siege where the fighting has gone on for too long and cost far too many lives. When David Shepherd (Christopher Egan, Resident Evil: Extinction), a brave young soldier, rescues the king's (Golden Globe winner Ian McShane, Deadwood) son from enemy territory, he sets events in motion that will finally bring peace. Suddenly, David is thrust into the limelight, earning the affections of women - including the king's daughter. When he's promoted to captain, he becomes the reluctant poster boy for hope. But for David, the line between his allies and enemies will blur as the power players in the kingdom go to great lengths to see him fall. From the director (Francis Lawrence) of the blockbuster movie I Am Legend comes the ultimate story of David vs. Goliath, and there's no telling who will win.

Merlin - Merlin brings to life a new legend for a modern audience. Merlin is an exciting, hour-long fantasy series set in the mythic city of Camelot - but inspired by 21st Century storytelling. Before Merlin (Colin Morgan, Doctor Who) and Arthur (Bradley James, Lewis) became legends, they were ambitious young men looking for adventure, hoping to live up to their family's expectations, discovering love and finding their own true destiny, making mistakes along the way. The innovative, action-packed drama has cross-generational appeal and paints a picture of Merlin and Arthur's early life that audiences have never witnessed before. Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Richard Wilson (A Passage to India), Angel Coulby (Magicians) and Katie McGrath (The Tudors) also star.

The Philanthropist - This one-hour drama is about a rebel with a cause. Teddy Rist loves women, money and power. After the tragic death of his only child, Teddy has an awakening and becomes the world's first vigilante philanthropist - a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need. He'll do anything to achieve his goals - bargain with the self-righteous, trade with the nefarious and even tell the truth. Instead of spending $25,000 a plate at a fundraiser, he's dodging bullets in third-world countries to hand-deliver vaccine. It's a global adventure that will take viewers to the ends of the Earth and will inspire them as well.

Kath and Kim - They're the most dysfunctional duo in suburbia. Kath Day (Molly Shannon, NBC's Saturday Night Live) is the mom, a foxy, 40-something divorce who finally has time for herself and her valiant search for love. Kim Day (Selma Blair, Hellboy," "Hellboy II" is the daughter, a self-absorbed princess recently separated from her husband who finds consolation in stuffing her face. When Kim decides to move back home, Kath reluctantly agrees - but to Kim's chagrin, Kath is not about to cater to her every whim as she has in the past. Based on the most successful comedy in Australia of the same name, Kath and Kim are two brassy women who prefer the finer things in life like acrylic nails, big hair and faux diamond chips.

"Heroes" Rundown Chapter 2: "Lizards"

In this week's episode of "Heroes" we learned a bit more about Maya's powers, got more into the story of Takezo Kensei and inched a little closer to learning what the heck is up with Peter and his bare chest. Also, I'm thinking this West kid is a real creep - and an annoying one at that.

Most anything else I can say is a spoiler, though, so if you didn't see the episode, don't read on. But for some of my thoughts on the show and to share your own, read more

Mrs. Bennet tells Claire not to show off with her mad regenerating skills, but I love it when Claire does that. Along those same lines, I'm surprised Claire never thought to cut off a toe or something before, just to see what happened. And that part was disgusting/awesome.

It's super cool that Hiro is actually the heroic one in Kensei's clothing, but I was sort of hoping that the hero in the legends was really the princess this whole time.

So Maya has a super destructive power while her twin brother has a kind of healing power. Maya is like Radioactive Ted from last season - a hero whose powers are destructive and difficult (or impossible) to control.

Of course Peter has to be bare chested and doused with liquid. I also love how he can slip out of his rope restraints, heal immediately from his wounds and defeat all the bad guys threatening Caitlin, but he just can’t be bothered to button up that flannel shirt.

Again, a lot more talk of God this week: God is referenced around Maya and Alejandro several times, and there was the whole thing about the Haitian being sick with the virus and that being God's will.

Also: the Haitian! He's back! And he's back with HRG! While looking at the Haitian, HRG says that Mohinder has given him everything he needs to find the other seven paintings.

Man, that West is getting on my nerves. “You don’t have to hide everything interesting about you.” Well, maybe if you’d shut up for a second she could say something interesting about herself. He’s just nag nag nag, all the time.

Whoever - or whatever - attacked Angela in the police station has the power of invisibility or to teleport or to go through walls or something. One possibility is Claude, of course, but I'm not convinced it's him.

Speaking of Angela, she and Kaito Nakamura, huh? What kind of "company" was this, anyway?

My theory so far is that this person who wants revenge on Angela and who killed Kaito Nakamura is Angela's husband (Nathan and Peter's dad), who supposedly "killed himself."

Kensei can regenerate! When he sees this, Hiro says “Godsend."

What did you think of this week's "Heroes"?

Heroes Rundown Chapter 4: "The Kindness of Strangers"

Ack! So many heroes, so little time or patience. Seriously, folks, this is getting crazy. I can't care about this many characters at once!

Adding to the mix of this season's superheroes is Micah's cousin Monica who, in addition to having a superhuman go-getter attitude, can also pick up skills super quickly (Heroes Wiki calls it photographic reflexes). I like the idea of incorporating a New Orleans storyline, but the number of heroes on this show is getting out of hand! We didn't even see anything about Hiro or Peter this week.

We did get to watch as West and Claire grow closer (despite the HRG's ban on dating), Maya and Alejandro encounter Sylar, Angela Petrelli "confesses" to a crime, Nathan shaves his beard (hooray!) and helps Parkman dig deeper into the Company's secrets. Of course, that's not all though, so to read more about this week's episode of Heroes, (spoilers ahead) read more

So, Molly's still screaming and having nightmares, etc. etc. I wonder if she would benefit from, say, painted walls and an overall less dismal living environment? Just a thought.

I totally forgot that Nathan had kids. And even they hate his beard.

Sure, leave it to the newbies to save Sylar (er, Gabriel Gray now). At least the whole Maya/Alejandro thing is starting to intertwine with the stories of other heroes. I also think it has a lot of potential to be a compelling plotline, with Sylar desperately wanting powers and driving with these two to New York.

Parkman explains to Nathan that his ex-wife cheated on him and got pregnant by the other guy. I am so sure there will be a little half-superbaby in a future episode.

Raise your hand if you are so not buying the Claire-West relationship. Not only does he grate against my last nerve, but I also think West is evil and not to be trusted.

Micah is sort of obnoxious at the beginning of the episode, but I definitely warmed to him by the end when he tries to help Monica. Ditto for Molly who very sweetly helps locate Parkman's dad in Philadelphia even though it terrifies her.

Could Sylar be any hotter in that black undershirt? Seriously?!

Again with the nasty cockroach thing! Why is it that someone's bloodied body doesn't faze me, but add a yucky insect to the mix and it's way too much?

What did you think of this week's episode?

"Heroes" Rundown Chapter 3: "Kindred"

Hands down, the best scenes in this week's "Heroes" were the ones featuring Sylar! Welcome back, villain. I am so intrigued to find out what his deal is right now, and as much as I love Sylar being evil, I think I love it even more when he struggles.

Meanwhile, there's a ton of stuff going on with all our gazillion heroes - Niki and Micah are back, Hiro does some more stuff in old Japan, Claire and West share some special moments, Peter finds Irish thug life to his liking, and more happens with the twins, Maya and Alejandro. Sheesh. For more of my thoughts about this week's episode and to share your own (spoilers ahead!), read more

Again: Sylar is back! But he's injured and may not be able to use his powers at all. Even after eating Candice's brains (or doing whatever he does), he can't access her shapeshifting power. Speaking of Candice, we finally see her real size, which she alluded to last season. Before getting Sylar-ified, Candice tells him, "The people I work for they’ll make sure you’ll get better."

Also, the montage in which Candice shapeshifs for, um, sexual role playing purposes is bizarre and creepy.

Niki and Micah are also back. DL, however, not so much. On his tombstone it reads "Husband - Father - Hero." Micah goes to stay with family in New Orleans while Niki gets help (or, "cured") from the golden spoon guy, Bob.

When Alejandro gets arrested, Maya pulls her Tears o' Death trick and she gets Alejandro out of prison. When Alejandro makes everything better for Maya, he also revives the American kid in the nearby cell. But why didn't he revive the wardens as well? I really hope this storyline connects to another hero's soon because it's starting to get annoying.

Okay, hold the phone. West shows Claire he can fly by zooming her up into the air while Enya-type music plays in the background. Anyone else find this unbearably cheesy? I started to feel embarrassed for them.

Peter helps the Irish thugs and is welcomed into their little crime family. Caitlin also happens to be a tattoo artist, so she gives Peter a tattoo of the "family crest." Yet, at the very end it looks like a marking of the Godsend symbol disappears from Peter's arm.

Also, Peter's gunshot wound spitting out the bullet made me giggle.

The only thing I liked about the Hiro/Kensei storyline this week was this quote: "Kensei? He does not run away from danger, he runs toward it. And punches its face!" Otherwise, I don't understand why we needed the scrolls to Ando in the sword. And after all that trouble convincing Kensei he's really a hero, he takes to his new life (regeneration, being with the princess) remarkably quickly. For the first time, I think I could have done without Hiro's story altogether this week.

There's a big "family" theme to the show recently. The Irish thugs tell Peter he's now a part of the family, and Bob says the same thing to Mohinder when he shows him the laboratory. Micah goes to stay with his family in New Orleans, Alejandro and Maya are siblings, Mohinder and Parkman have formed a family with Molly, and, of course, there's always the Bennets.

Speaking of which: hello crazy eighth painting! Creepy. It seems to depict HRG bloodied on the floor, glasses broken, eyes bulging, while Claire is apparently kissing someone.

What did you think of "Kindred"?

2007 Sundance Film Festival: The Cold, Hard Cash

My coverage of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival is almost over, as the event comes to a close in Park City, Utah. I've brought you previews of some of the promising comedies, dramas, dramedies and documentaries, so I figured I'd also mention some of the films that, thanks to big studios offering lots of money, will probably be coming to a theater near you (or Netflix) relatively soon. Check out which movies attracted the big money - and how much.

The dramedy starring John Cusack, Grace Is Gone, was bought by The Weinstein Company for $4 million.

The documentary questioning child genius, My Kid Could Paint That, handed over rights to Sony Pictures Classics for a cool $1 million.

The Southern small-town comedy starring Keri Russell, Waitress, was bought by Fox Searchlight for $4 million.

Paramount Vintage paid an impressive $7 million for the rights to a British coming-of-age film called Son of Rambow.

To see the rest read more

I don't know how I missed this one, but I can't wait to see it: romantic drama Dedication, starring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore drew $4 million from the Weinstein Company and First Look.

Not another dance competition movie! Yes, a drama called How She Move and was bought by MTV Films and Paramount Vantage for $3 million.

Psychological thriller Joshua drew in $4 million by Fox Searchlight, while horror flick The Signal was bought by Magnolia Films for $2 million.

Black Snake Moan already has Paramount Classics behind it and will be in theaters on February 23rd.
