Jet Blue's Famous Former Flight Attendant Goes to Broadway

Do you remember the Jet Blue incident in which flight attendant Steven Slater threw a fit and stormed out of the plane after dealing with one too many rude passengers? His over-the-top exit, complete with profanities and a neat escape down the emergency chute, certainly left people talking. And apparently, it's dramatic enough for theater - the notorious scene will be reenacted in a Broadway play called Wild Blue. Steven's role is to be played by actor Chad Miller. Here is a blurb from Wild Blue's website:

This production imagines the hysterical and haunting circumstances that caused former Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater to curse at passengers over the intercom, escape down the emergency slide, and become an instant Facebook sensation. After his breakdown, Steven flees to a cabin near the Canadian border, inhabited by famed 1970's airline hijacker/outlaw D.B. Cooper, now a micro-farming recluse.

I guess Steven's outburst really made an impact on people!

Spice Girls Musical in the Works: Brilliant or Baffling?

Here's a blast from the '90s past: American Idol creator Simon Fuller is working on a Spice Girls musical for the stage, with the working title of "Viva Forever."

Fuller is collaborating with Judy Craymer, who is behind the Mamma Mia musical, so it's being speculated that the show will use Spice Girls music the way Mamma Mia used ABBA's songs (and not star the actual band members). I may or may not have bought several Spice Girls singles back in the day and dressed up with my friends as each member, and 15-year-old me might be excited about this one. But it could also be too early for '90s nostalgia, and the plot could be completely absurd to fit the pop songs. What do you think?

Hope! Obama Musical to Debut in Germany

It's springtime for Obama as a telling the story of his ascent to power in song and dance debuts in Germany. Hope! will feature roles including Barack and Michelle, a much-younger Hillary Clinton and John McCain, and of course Sarah Palin, whose solo includes scantily clad backup singers. The lyrics, mostly in English, are taken heavily from political speeches and statements.

Written by American composer Randall Hutchins, Hope! begs one question: why Germany? My guess is it would not do well in the US - even among Obama lovers, the honeymoon is over. But Germany is far enough removed to idealize Obama, or at least his election.

Mamma Mia! Invites Families to Sing it!

You know the scene in My Best Friend's Wedding when the dude pretending to be with Julia Roberts breaks into song while smack in the middle of a speech, and as Hollywood would have it, the whole table joins in? The peeps below made the scene a little less Hollywood and a little more Broadway. They had a fantastic performance, but I wanna know how everyone in attendance at this wedding (even the father of the groom!) had a voice fit for singing. Uh, Twilight Zone much? (Thanks, College Humor!)

The Food Court Musical

Improv Everywhere is known for busting out comedic performances in unlikely locations, so they staged a musical - in a shopping mall food court. It all started with the Hot Dog on a Stick girl crying over spilled lemonade and ended with the whole food court triumphantly singing about napkin shortage. Hungry patrons, clueless that the joke was on them, didn't know whether to laugh or cry. If you ask me, all they had to do was buy a corn dog from the crying chick and tell her to shove it. But that would have made this a lot less funny.

Which TV Show Will Announce a Musical Next?

Apparently, musical episodes of TV shows are the new black. I told you a while back that "Ugly Betty" was mulling a musical episode, and now, according to Variety, "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry is thinking about getting Wisteria Lane to sing and dance, too. If one more show breaks into song, I'll be ready to declare this a full-out trend. So, which show would you bet will be next?

Would You Watch a Musical "Ugly Betty"?

First "Buffy" did a musical episode, then "Scrubs," now ... "Ugly Betty"? The show's cast and crew said this week that a singing, dancing "Betty" is in the works.

Cast members have been talking about doing a musical on the show's podcast for a while now, but I always assumed it was a joke. Earlier this week, though, star America Ferrera told an audience at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that the cast had been begging to do a musical episode since day one - and the show's executive producer confirmed that a musical is being planned.

While I have mixed feelings about gimmicky TV in general, "Ugly Betty" might be the rare show that can pull off a musical. We've already heard Justin (Mark Indelicato) belt one out in the subway, and Vanessa Williams was a singer first. "Betty" is pretty campy already, and I'm not sure characters breaking into song would even feel out of place.

Meanwhile, the lucky folks in the audience when ABC announces its fall schedule this month will get a bit of a preview: Michael Urie, who plays Marc, has said that he, Mark Indelicato and Becki Newton will be performing a song-and-dance number.
