New Music Videos: Oasis and Kings of Leon

Interested in some moody, soul-searching tunes and visuals to match? Well, I have just the thing for you today by way of two moody, soul-searching bands.

First up, a new video from Kings of Leon for the song "Use Somebody" off the Kings' new album, Only By the Night. The video cuts from a close-up of lead singer Caleb Followill pouring his heart out to shots of the band playing for live audiences, practicing at rehearsal, hanging out shooting pool, and heating things up between Caleb (well, I think it's him) and one lucky ~~groupie~~ lady. I just saw this band live in San Francisco, and the performance of this song gave me chills in person. The video definitely does the tune justice.

The second video is from Oasis for their single "I'm Outta Time" off the band's Dig Out Your Soul, which is out now. I think I'll leave the description to the MySpace folks, because it's funny: "Liam on a surreal journey through a moon-lit English landscape. Subtly psychedelic!" The black-and-white visuals are pretty with or without the sound on, in my opinion.

MTV Video Music Awards: Who's Missing From the Nominations

The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards are coming our way once again, and as I skimmed the nominees for this year, I started to feel perplexed. Some of the nominees are totally appropriate, but others make me scratch my head, and I could think of other videos from this year that are far more deserving.

Maybe it's a sign of the times, but did you know that there used to be categories for awards like Best Post-Modern Video and Best Concept Video? I feel like they used to at least acknowledge groundbreaking work in music videos, but because of the decreasing airtime for videos on MTV, maybe there just isn't a need anymore? I'm not sure, but I do know that there are some videos I would add to the mix on Sept. 7 if I could.

Best Female Video: MTV's nominees include Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" which is definitely funny, and Rihanna's "Take A Bow." But maybe instead of Jordan Sparks's video for "No Air" I'd throw in Feist's video for "I Feel It All" and Solange Knowles's "I Decided." Solange's costumes and visuals are so awesome, and how can you resist Feist?

Best Male Video: It's hard to argue with most of MTV's picks, especially Usher's "Love in This Club" (touch of sarcasm there), but I would add Andrew Bird's video for his song "Lull". It's a lovely and unique animated piece that deserves some love.

Best Hip Hop Video: I'm glad MTV included Kanye West and Chris Martin's video collaboration for the song "Homecoming" in the list of nominees because it's a gorgeous shout-out to Chicago. I think another Kanye collaboration deserves to be in there, though: Estelle's video for "American Boy."

Best Pop Video: I'm not going to argue with Jonas Brothers or Danity Kane or Britney Spears because, you know, whatever. But wouldn't it be hilarious if Robin Sparkles made it in there?

Best New Artist: Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jordan Sparks - but no Vampire Weekend?! They're having as big a year as it gets for a band. They're even apparently making America cool again, for Pete's sake, and still no love from MTV. Well, I would like to officially note that I think they deserve a nod for "Oxford Comma." Also, that first She & Him video where Zoe's head explodes is awesome and they're the best new artists in my heart.

Best Rock Video: I don't know if Death Cab For Cutie falls into the same category as groups like Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, and Linkin Park but I think their video for "I Will Possess Your Heart" is great and deserves some attention.

Music Video: Vampire Weekend, "Oxford Comma"

"Oxford Comma" is one of my favorite songs off Vampire Weekend's self-titled album because it's catchy and laid back and perfect for summertime. The lyrics are funny, too, what with the rebellious stance the band takes on caring too much about Oxford commas (otherwise known as the serial comma. . . sorry, that was nerdy).

Anyway, the video for the song is cool and they shot it in one long, single take (took them 17 tries). Also, it could just be the font style, but this video kinda feels like a Wes Anderson film. To check it out for yourself, read more.

Vote for Your Favorite Bjork Video

Back in April, I told you that Bjork was hosting a music video contest, where fans could submit their very own visual accompaniments to "Innocence," a song on Bjork's new album, Volta. Now, the videos are now being uploaded for viewing here - currently, there are seven, but the site promises 10 total - and when all the movies are up, fans can vote on their favorites.

Anything but amateurish, every entry interprets the song differently, using all sort of assorted styles of animation. One resembles a Nintendo-like video game, while I'm partial to Number 4, which has more of a high-tech gothic wonderland vibe. Watch them online and tell me which one is your favorite.

Just the other day, I was saying that YouTube is helping save the music video. But if you need more proof, check out this list of the 50 greatest music videos of 2006. You're not likely to find most of these on MTV, but you can find them all on YouTube. As a result, most of these artsy videos are highly creative and refreshingly unglitzy. Highlights include the famous treadmill video for OK Go's "Here It Goes Again" and some more obscure picks, like two of my favorites below.

Buzz-Worthy Video of the Day: Adam Lambert's Time For Miracles

Adam Lambert's new song "Time For Miracles" leaked online a few days ago, and I was admittedly mixed about it. Now, the music video for the song is making the rounds on the blogosphere, and I'm actually digging it more than I thought I would!

It's from the upcoming film 2012, so it has the obligatory movie scenes, but dare I say, Lambert's pretty darn sexy in it. (I bet TresSugar would agree with me!) Plus, the way he starts wailing around the three-minute mark could even give Christina Aguilera a run for her money. I'm still waiting for his video duet with Kris Allen, but until then check out "Miracles" and tell me what you think when you read more.

Buzz-Worthy Video: Beck, Feist, Wilco Performing Together

Guaranteed way to make me drop everything I'm doing and press play: tell me that Beck, Feist, and Wilco are collaborating. It's true; Beck recruited the folk chanteuse, the rock band, and British singer Jamie Lidell to join him to perform a tribute to '60s musician Skip Spence.

Their cover of Spence's song, "Little Hands," was recorded in the famous Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood in ultrahip black and white. The song is beautiful, but I'm still just beaming to see some of my favorite artists in one room together (including Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer on drums!). And Beck, you're rocking that devil's haircut.

Video of the Day: Weezer's "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To"

I questioned the substance of Weezer's single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" off their upcoming album Raditude when I heard it a couple months ago, but the video is the kind that actually makes me like the song more.

I'm crediting the video's director, Marc Webb, who helmed (500) Days of Summer, for the retro-hip look. It's set in a '50s-ish town called "Weezerville" with tons of Americana touches, like a barber shop and plenty of era-appropriate costumes.

Watch the video and see if you don't enjoy "If You're Wondering . . ." just a little bit more. Oh, and if you ever had a crush on Rivers (I know I'm guilty), this clip might bring those old familiar feelings back. To see all the fun, just read more.

Buzz-Worthy Video: Comedian Christmas Carol

Is it too early for a holiday music video? Not when it's one starring a host of comedians like Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, Weird Al Yankovic, and Rob Huebel, plus many more. Even Mary Lynn Rajskub pops up for a verse or two!

The song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?", was originally written in the '80s for a group of celeb musicians, but this one is very different, and very tongue-in-cheek. Just take the, um, "special appearance" by Thomas Lennon and Ed Helms.
