Star Trek to Re-Release in IMAX - Will You See It Again?

This Friday, Paramount will re-release Star Trek in IMAX theaters for a two-week run. When the movie first opened, it only got a two-week IMAX run then as well, since IMAX theaters were needed for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. More theaters didn't become available again "until Museum 2, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were done with their consecutive runs."

IMAX or otherwise, Star Trek did extremely well for itself at the box office the first time around - do you think you'll watch it again? Or maybe for the first time? Or have you starred there, trekked that?

Watch, Pass, TiVo, or Rent: Taking Woodstock

I wasn't sure what to make of the trailer for Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock; it seems like such funny material for the Academy Award-winning director of Brokeback Mountain and The Ice Storm.

Then again, maybe there is more of a dramatic arc here with comedian Demetri Martin's role as a shy, closeted teen. Is it the story of his coming out, his family's role in putting on the legendary festival, or is it just an excuse to put Liev Schreiber in a dress? I'm interested in seeing if Martin can carry a heavier role like this, and sure, I wouldn't mind seeing what Emile Hirsch pulls as a crazy hippie, but I don't know if I'm rushing out to see it on opening night.

Will you be heading to the theater for this, waiting til it comes out on video, or skipping it altogether?

Have You Gone to the Movies More Than Usual This Summer?

Despite the recession, box-office numbers are approaching record highs this Summer. Through last Sunday, box office "revenues were $3.99 billion, up 5 percent over the same stretch in 2008, which eventually notched up $4.14 billion. That means that ticket sales are nearing the $4.16 billion collected in the record-breaking summer of 2007. Studios and theater owners expect revs to break that record by Sunday, a week before Labor Day weekend, which is the official end of the season." Then again, Labor Day is later than usual this year, so there are more days available for raking in the cash.

Still, those are some good numbers! Do you think you've gone to the theater more often than usual this Summer? Or, are you not one of the contributors to this Summer's box office success?

Will You See the Michael Jackson Movie in Theaters?

A film built around rehearsal footage from just before Michael Jackson's death will be released in theaters for two weeks starting Oct. 28. Tickets for the movie, titled Michael Jackson: This Is It and directed by Kenny Ortega, will go on sale Sept. 27. About the film, Ortega says:

This film is Michael's gift to his fans. It's a very private, exclusive look into a creative genius's world. For the first time ever, fans will see Michael as they have never seen him before - this great artist at work. It is raw, emotional, moving, and powerful footage that captures his interactions with the This Is It collaborators that he had personally assembled for this once-in-a-lifetime project.

Do you think you'll seek this in theaters at the end of October?

Continue or Kill: The Halloween Movies

These days if the Hollywood bigwigs aren't remaking something, they're tacking on more sequels to an existing franchise. Franchises are getting reboots and TV shows are being brought back to life with all new casts. Sometimes it can be a good thing (Star Trek) but certain ideas probably should have been killed (cough! 90210 cough!). So, instead of lamenting remake or reboot ideas right off the bat, I thought I'd put it to a vote.

Last year Rob Zombie released his remake/reimagining of John Carpenter's 1978 movie Halloween, which itself had spawned a whole line of sequels. This Friday we'll see another Rob Zombie remake, this time of the original first sequel to Halloween (got all that?). The 1978 movie is probably my favorite scary film to watch on Halloween itself but I'm not a fan of Zombie's remake, and I'm not so sure we needed a remake of a sequel to Halloween.

What do you think? Are you still interested in the Michael Myers character? Or should we finally lay this slasher film series to rest?

What Is Your Favorite Tarantino-Directed Film?

This week audiences are gearing up for Inglourious Basterds, another dark, funny, bloody, crazy film from Quentin Tarantino. He's had quite the career thus far, earning an enthusiastic following - as well as plenty of haters. I tend to like his films, and I have particular soft spots for Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill: Vol. 1. What is your favorite Tarantino-directed movie?

Are These the Top 15 Best Movies Since 2000?

There are countless lists of the best movies of all time, but what about focusing on just this millennium? Over on IMDB, they're listing off "the Top Rated Films of the New Millennium, looking at the 15 films made since 2000 that our users have rated as the best of the new millennium." So, it's not a bunch of snooty critics making these decisions, the list is based on ratings from general IMDB readers.

The Fourth Kind Trailer: Scary or Silly?

For those of you who said you're more interested in a scary movie when it's said to be based on true events, it's likely you'll find the trailer for The Fourth Kind rather eerie. Milla Jovovich stars in this thriller about alien abductions, allegedly based on real archival footage of interviews with abductees and people who have seen aliens in one Alaskan town. The description continues: "Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film."

When I first started watching the trailer, I thought it would be one of those things that tries so hard to be scary it ends up seeming silly. But by the end of the trailer, I have to admit, I was totally spooked. Take a look at the video and tell me what you think.

Do You Like the Idea of Jonah Hill as a Romantic Leading Man?

Universal has recently acquired the script for The Best Thing About Pam Rooney, a "high-concept romantic comedy" that will apparently star Jonah Hill in the lead role. No real details yet on plot, but this casting news alone got me thinking about Jonah Hill's career thus far. I've enjoyed him, for the most part, as a supporting character to many other funny lead actors, but I wonder if I'll enjoy sitting through an entire romantic comedy centered around his role. It may come down to what the relationship is like between his character and the other romantic lead, but I'm a little bit wary nonetheless.

What do you think of Jonah Hill as the main man in a rom-com?

G.I. Joe Opens This Weekend: Are You Excited For It?

I'll admit it: I forgot about this G.I. Joe movie. I didn't realize until today that it's coming out this Friday, Aug. 7. This doesn't necessarily bode well for the action film, but then again, it does have a strong fan base already and is garnering some positive reviews.

Here's a synopsis: "An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer."

Are you excited to see this popcorn flick? Or, do you just not care?
