We Could Have a Bald Miss America, and That's Great

Miss Delaware Kayla Martell will be competing for the Miss America crown very soon, and she may be doing it without one thing most pageant queens take for granted: hair. Kayla has alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes sufferers to lose their hair and can leave them totally bald. She's been without hair since she was a child, and until her third year competing in the Miss Delaware pageant, she never even had a wig. She was bewigged for her Miss Delaware win, but apparently the pageant organization has told her that she can compete without it for Miss America.

Kayla doesn't wear a wig in her everyday life, and I think she looks great, so it would be really inspiring to have her go onstage bald. I realize, though, that it might be harder for her to win and spread her message if she doesn't "measure up" to the pageant queen look some judges will expect.

Does Getting to Know the Contestants Make You Care About Miss America?

Last Friday, TLC premiered a new reality series called Miss America: Countdown to the Crown that follows 52 pageant queens vying for this year's Miss America crown (they did something similar last year).

Each week audiences can tune in to watch the ladies live together on an ocean cruise liner and go through various challenges that are apparently meant to prepare them for the big competition on Jan. 24.

These days, beauty pageants battle to remain relevant now that judging a woman's swimsuit bod and "peace on earth" answers seems a bit . . . retro.

TV Tonight: Miss America: Reality Check

When TLC got the rights to air Miss America, it wanted to reinvigorate the tired pageant. And it's starting tonight, with a reality show whipping this year's 52 contestants into shape.

Miss America: Reality Check puts the contestants under one roof for four weeks and asks them to complete a series of challenges. The goal: out with the sequins and big hair, in with a new wave of smarter, savvier beauty queens. The pinnacle of the series is the pageant itself, which will air Jan. 26 - and Reality Check viewers will get the chance to vote one of the contestants directly into the finals.

When I first heard TLC was going to do a Miss America reality show, I begged for a What Not to Wear tie-in, and I have to say, TLC has done me one better. Not only will Clinton Kelly and Stacy London appear on the show, but it will be hosted by the only person besides Kelly I'd like to see take on a room full of beauty queens: Michael Urie of Ugly Betty. (I'm assuming Carson Kressley was booked; his own reality show, How to Look Good Naked, premieres tonight on Lifetime). Urie is totally hilarious, and - as half of your favorite platonic duo on TV - great at dealing with drama. I would have been mildly interested in watching anyway, but with Urie involved, it's a must-see.

Will You Watch Miss America on TLC?

The Miss America Pageant is homeless no more. Dropped by ABC in 2004, then by Country Music Television this year, the pageant finally found a TV partner this week in TLC. The network inked a deal to air the pageant through 2010, along with a reality series preceding the 2008 pageant that will follow the preparations of the 52 contestants. (I sure hope there's a "What Not to Wear" tie-in.)

TLC seems like a better fit for the pageant than CMT did, but since the broadcast version of Miss America basically fell off the map once ABC dropped it three years ago, I'm wondering if anybody will be watching when the competition airs in January. Are you over Miss America? Or does the new TV deal make you curious to check it out?

But they made an appearance together at a press conference to try to explain away all of Tara's crowning achievements in the areas of drug, alcohol, and partying abuse since taking the throne. With verbal vomit flowing and a smile plastered on her face, Tara reminds us why she won the title in the first place- she can bullsh*t with the best of them. So VH1 "remastered" the footage a bit and, despite the retina damaging glow from Tara's overly whitened teeth, it's well worth your attention.
