Gay Couples Are More Traditional Than Some People Think

In this hilarious, slightly NSFW, video promoting gay marriage, Justin Long and Mike White play two gay spouses in the midst of a regular old marriage. If proponents of the "traditional" family want to do away with the indecent gay lifestyle, the video explains, they should legalize gay marriage. Eventually gay lovers will turn into boring, bickering, sexless, yet still adorable, spouses. The message to straight people who oppose marriage: have no fear, they're just like us.

Yet a new study shows that long-term, homosexual couples actually might have an advantage over their heterosexual counterparts. Teens raised by lesbian parents are less aggressive, engage in less rule-breaking, and have fewer social problems overall, according to a 20-year study just released. The study's author says that "moms in the lesbian family are very committed, very involved parents" and she expects similar advantages for children growing up with two dads, too. Factors including the parents' financial means, level of engagement, and preparedness for raising a kid likely are to thank, and one family therapist concluded that when lesbian mothers prepare their children for the social stigma they might face, the discussion acts as a valuable "relationship-building" experience for both parents and children.

Laura Dern and Mike White Get Enlightened at HBO

Are enlightened folks the new nurses, when it comes to TV trends? Just a couple of weeks after Showtime announced a religion-themed show called Revelation, HBO is developing a series of its own called Enlightened.

Enlightened, from School of Rock writer (and recent Amazing Race contestant) Mike White, will star Laura Dern as "a formerly self-destructive woman who, after having a spiritual awakening, becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating havoc at home and work." White developed the half-hour comedy specifically for Dern, who had told HBO she'd be willing to do a show only if she found the right material. White said:

There are so many dysfunctional types of characters populating cable television, and she is equally as dysfunctional as any of them, but her impulse is to get healthy, to make the world a better place even though it creates havoc.

Between this and Diane Keaton's recently announced comedy project, HBO is definitely lining up some big talent for its new comedies. What do you make of this show? Do you want to see Dern as a comedy series lead?

Jake Gives Reese a Party For a Present

Jake Gyllenhaal grabbed lunch with his former costar Mike White at Le Pain restaurant in LA earlier today. Before his Monday man date, Jake spent the weekend helping Reese turn 33 with a birthday party at his house on Saturday. Maggie Gyllenhaal made the trip, along with Peter and Ramona, as well as Robert Downey Jr. and his wife. Reese spent her actual birthday promoting Monsters vs. Aliens on Sunday, but dancing the night away with Jake sounds like the perfect preparty.

Are You Ready to (School of) Rock (Again)?

Well, Jack Black is.
Paramount is announcing today that they will move forward on a sequel to School of Rock, the 2003 comedy in which Jack Black played a substitute teacher who teaches a bunch of fifth graders how to properly rock 'n' roll.

OK, actually, it kinda sounds. . . really cute.
I'm not often excited about sequels, but this one might turn out to be pretty adorable. Variety describes the plot:

[T]itled School of Rock 2: America Rocks, [the movie] picks up with Finn leading a group of summer school students on a cross-country field trip that delves into the history of rock 'n' roll and explores the roots of blues, rap, country and other genres.

I'd really like to take that trip myself, actually.
It's definitely a cute enough premise, and screenwriter Mike White is back on board, which is good. I generally like his projects (The Good Girl, Year of the Dog, Orange County). And in all honesty, I think the students' little U.S. music tour might actually teach us some stuff.

Get Moving and Say I Do: Ways to Incorporate Fitness Into Your Wedding

Fitness fanatics have a tough time separating workouts from life, so why should their wedding be any different? Here are some ways to bring an active lifestyle into your big day.

Send out fitness-themed save-the-date cards with you and your partner doing something active, like standing on surfboards with a sign that says, "Water you waiting for? Put this date on your calendar!" Or use a play on words like, "Jenny's finally running away with Mike." You can also design your invitations with exercise in mind. Have them look like a poster advertising a race or use illustrations that depict your favorite sport, such as golf balls and clubs.
If your wedding is going to be over a long weekend, plan activities that'll get folks moving. Hire a yoga instructor to teach a class; plan a scenic bike ride, morning run, or woodsy walk; or play a friendly game of beach volleyball (just make sure the bride's face stays far away from the ball).
