Nicole Kidman to Channel Dusty Springfield?

When Michael Cunningham and Nicole Kidman last got together, for 2002's The Hours, the result was an Oscar win and a boatload of critical acclaim. So my ears perked at the news that Cunningham wants to work with Kidman again - this time on a biopic of British soul singer and chanteuse Dusty Springfield.

Cunningham told New York Magazine's Vulture blog that he's currently writing the screenplay for the film, with Kidman meant to play the lead role. Cunningham said he's trying to convey the idea that Springfield "was a great artist who no one knew what to do with" and who clearly deserves a spot in rock history with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones - but he said he won't be shying away from the seedier side of Springfield's life, which included drug abuse and an often-prickly personality.

Though I was disappointed with Evening, the last film Cunningham penned, there's no denying that he has a special talent for delving into the multi-layered lives of complicated women. And I like picturing Kidman in the role, playing both the popular, public Dusty and the more private, darker side. (I don't know if she could pull off Springfield's sultry vocals, but I was impressed with her singing in Moulin Rouge.)

Announcing the 2012 Independent Spirit Award Nominees

Kate Beckinsale and Anthony Mackie were up early this morning to present the nominees for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The Artist and Take Shelter lead the pack with five nominations apiece. Right behind it was Drive, which picked up four nods, including one for leading man Ryan Gosling. The Descendants also scored four nominations, though George Clooney was left off the list this time. Though two of our favorite movies of the year didn't pick up quite as many nods, I was happy to see that Beginners and 50/50 got some love, including nominations for best feature.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Michael Kors

First, it must be said that this was one of the most energy-filled, visually dizzying shows of the week. It was hard to decide where to focus. On the star-packed front row that included Anjelica Huston, Debra Messing, Emma Roberts, Rene Russo, and Catherine Zeta-Jones whispering in Michael Douglas's ear? Or at the bevy of supermodels walking the runway at once - Erin Wasson, Karlie Kloss, Carmen Kass, Chanel Iman? And, oh yes, what about the Fall collection that marked 30 years of Michael Kors? The show was an upbeat party of glamour and decadence that at times felt like a retrospective. There were sharply tailored coats, elegantly draped dresses with silver hardware, a black bodysuit over a black pleated skirt slit up to here, fur, flannel, cashmere, silk. It was Michael Kors to. the. max. Even the models were smiling. There were some special moments, particularly when older models Frankie Rayder, Angela Lindvall, Isabeli Fontana, and Carmen Kass strode the runway, and if you had the pleasure of sitting across from NY Times legend Bill Cunningham, you got to see him smiling like a schoolboy as his hands flew from one camera to the next, happily determined not to miss a gorgeous moment. Michael Kors has made American sportswear something luxurious and celebratory, and we hope he keeps bringing the good vibes.
