Michael Cera - Love Him or Leave Him?

Friends, I think it's time we discussed a topic called Michael Cera backlash. The root of the problem is that Cera always seems to play the same character (don't believe me? check out this chart of evidence). Keeping right on trend, he's set to produce a TV series called 13th Grade, about a guy who's having trouble transitioning to the real world after graduating from high school. Cera fatigue has also been credited as a possible reason why Scott Pilgrim vs. the World tanked at the box office.

Now, I'm not saying that Cera necessarily deserves the current recoil; I am one of the many, many Arrested Development devotees that fell head over heels for George Michael Bluth, and more importantly, Cera's perfect portrayal of a bumbling adolescent. No matter how many times he's pigeonholed on the big screen, I can always go back to my AD DVD collection to restore my faith in Cera.

Anna Kendrick Takes on the World With Michael and Jason

Anna Kendrick was in London yesterday to make the press rounds with her Scott Pilgrim vs. the World costars Michael Cera and the soon-to-be dad, Jason Schwartzman. The trio is in Europe ahead of their movie's release there - it opened in the US last Friday and came in third at the weekend box office, behind The Expendables and Eat Pray Love. Anna is back into the swing of hanging out with the boys after their recent LA premiere stint at Comic-Con and junket, where she revealed that she thinks of Michael in particular as a brother.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Game On!

Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a genre-bender - it's part action flick, part rock and roll anthem, part romantic comedy. Overlaid with whimsical video game effects, it's a risky combo to employ for a mainstream film, but director Edgar Wright has executed it so confidently and with such commitment that it's a triumph.

Michael Cera is the title character, a bass player in the band Sex Bob-Omb, who mostly hangs out with his friends and deals with the daily drama of his love life. When he meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), his mysterious, multicolored-tressed love interest, he falls at his feet to date her. Like any new relationship, there are challenges - specifically Ramona's past, which includes seven angry exes that Scott must fight to the death if he wants to keep seeing Ramona. Not only is his life on the line, each of his nemeses has a mystical power he has to overcome (my favorite? Brandon Routh's vegan-powered psychic abilities). It's fantastical, for sure, but give it a shot: Scott Pilgrim is an energy drink of a movie, an effervescent gem with the aesthetics of a video game and the heart of an indie romance.

They might play romantic rivals in the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World but Jason Schwartzman and Michael Cera clearly have no bad blood between them off the set. We sat down with the costars in Hollywood as they prepped for the video game-inspired film to hit theaters next month. Cera stars as Scott, while Schwartzman plays Gideon, one of his girlfriend's seven evil exes hell-bent on destroying him. The hilarious twosome dished to me on the “miserable” training required for their impressive fight scene, the graphic novels that inspired the film, and why they’d never challenge each other to a push-up contest.
