So You Think You Can Dance: Jessica's Out!

Big news for So You Think You Can Dance fans from Monday's session at the TCA press tour. Jessica King, who slipped into the top 10 last week, is out with an injury, and Comfort's taken her spot in the competition.

Nigel Lythgoe wouldn't be specific about the nature of her injury or the time that it happened - though he said he hopes Jessica herself will be available to do that on the show this week. Comfort hadn't left LA yet when Jessica had to drop out, and she was back in rehearsal as of Monday morning.

In fact, all of the top 10 dancers were in rehearsal, which was a bit of a bummer, since I'd really been hoping to check out Twitchington in the flesh. Instead, we got a foxtrot from Kourtni and Matt (who really are that tall) and a solo from Thayne (who really is that smiley) before Nigel, Mary Murphy, Cat Deely, and Mia Michaels took the stage for some Q&A. Some highlights:

Mary explained that she'd been using her "hot tamale train" expression for years to describe dancers - typically fiery ballroom dancers. The hot tamale train typically doesn't pull into the station during more emotional performances, no matter how much Mary likes them; she's usually too close to crying for that. Also, if some couple gets two tickets on the hot tamale train, that means Mary thinks they're headed for the finale. Now we know.
Mia doesn't think she's a mean judge. "I'm just being very honest," she said. She insisted that in rehearsals she's "Mama Mia" and the dancers look to her for tough love.
When the choreographers work with the dancers, they have an hour and a half on Friday and three hours on Saturday - and that's just about it.

Nigel was still obviously upset when asked about Robert quitting earlier this season. "No dancer should quit," he said. "At any point. Ever." He said he'd be curious to see if Robert backed down from his potential dance battle with Phillip Chbeeb next. Ouch.
Nigel's philosophy on SYTYCD, American Idol, and other shows where the audience votes: "The public often get it wrong. But at the end of the day, they sort of put it right - it's along the way they get things wrong." He used as an example Tamyra Gray getting kicked off Idol but Kelly Clarkson rightfully winning.
Nigel noted that that the past two years, the finale has pitted a brilliant dancer (Travis, Danny) against a brilliant performer (Benji, Sabra) and the performer has come out on top.

Michael Fassbender Talks "Awkward" Sex Scenes and Not Wanting to Get a "Free Feel"

Jane Eyre stars Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska posed for photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino in the April issue of W, which will be on newsstands March 22. The duo were also together last week in NYC for the East Coast premiere of their movie, which features Mia tackling the iconic title role. Michael, who recently shared with us about his newfound sex symbol status, has the task of portraying Charlotte Brontë's elsuive Mr. Rochester. He told the magazine, though, that he felt too young to play the part but was game to tackle the sex scenes. Mia also weighed in about her start in Hollywood. They said:

Michael on sex vs. death scenes: "Sex scenes can be quite awkward. As a guy, the first thing you want to do is make sure you’re not taking advantage. You don’t want the girl to feel like you’re getting a free feel or something. I try to make a fool of myself in one way or another to lighten the mood and then just go for it, because you don’t want to be doing take after take. As for dying - to not play like you’re dying is the way to go when you’re dying in a movie. I think it’s best to look like you’re about to fall asleep."
Mia on her start in acting: "When I decided to pursue acting at 15, I heard that you had to have an agent to do film and television, so I did a Google search on acting agencies in Sydney. I hounded one to take me on and started auditioning."
Michael on playing Mr. Rochester: "I’m probably 10 years too young for Rochester, so I went for a Byronic sort of hero. I didn’t read Jane Eyre in school, but my mother and sister were always talking about it, and that was a big reason why I did it. I didn’t have a preconceived idea of Rochester - I just saw him as encapsulating so many interesting elements: a shady past, intelligent, self-destructive, destructive, passionate. And he has a terrible secret. I’m curious to see what my mother and sister think of my Rochester."

Zoe Kravitz Supports Michael Fassbender at His Jane Eyre Premiere!

Michael Fassbender and his Jane Eyre costar Mia Wasikowska posed for photos last night at the NYC premiere alongside their great-looking director, Cary Fukunaga - check out our chat with Cary about his first big screen project since 2009's Sin Nombre. The gang was in the Big Apple to promote their modern take on the classic Charlotte Brontë story, though Michael has also been busy shooting a new movie called Shame. He, Mia, and Cary were on the East Coast last month for their film's junket - stay turned for video from our chats! Michael even shared a bit about his love life during our talk, and his rumored girlfriend, Zoe Kravitz, turned out yesterday to show her support. Zoe and Michael met working on their upcoming X-Men: First Class, which seems like it's going to be awesome judging by the first trailer.

Jane Eyre: Needs More Fire

Multiple miniseries and movies have taken on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, so is another adaptation of the classic novel really necessary? Perhaps not, but director Cary Fukunaga's beautifully shot retelling is still a worthy addition to the previous versions of the tale. It stays loyal to Bronte's material while retaining the book's gothic soul.

Mia Wasikowska stars as the literary heroine, a governess at a sprawling but dreary estate called Thornfield Hall. The film begins when a distraught Jane flees Thornfield and is taken in by clergyman St. John Rivers (Jaime Bell). Though Jane won't tell John about her past or where she comes from, the audience sees all of it via flashbacks, beginning with Jane's difficult childhood under the watch of her cold-hearted aunt (Sally Hawkins). Fed up with Jane, the aunt sends her away to the strict Lowood charity school, where Jane grows up with little human connection. Once she's old enough, she lands the job at Thornfield under the aloof Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender) and mysterious events begin to occur in the house. It's a lot of ground for the film to cover, but by encapsulating Bronte's story, we get more insight into Jane, instead of focusing on her relationship with Mr. Rochester. The downside is that their romance could have benefited from the extra attention and development.
