40 Vintage Oscars Beauty Looks

Some stars' past Academy Award beauty looks weren't the best we've ever seen, but a peek back into the red carpet vault proves that there were many who got it right. Sure, poodle perms, frosted shadows, and brick red lipstick might look strange or dated to us now, but they at one point constituted what was hot at the time. Here are 40 stars who stood out with their memorable makeup and hairstyles at the Oscars (and Governors Ball) from way back when.

First Look: Be Kind Rewind

Up until today, there was just a grainy bootleg version of the trailer for goofball comedy Be Kind Rewind that someone covertly (or, not so covertly, since it says "Shhh I wasn't supposed to tape this! Hee hee..." before the footage) videotaped at Comic-Con where the trailer was screened. Now there's a legit trailer for all to enjoy, and enjoy it I do.

I'm not sure where I am on the topic of Jack Black. I loved him in High Fidelity, but quickly grew tired of him in School of Rock. This trailer, however, looks like the comedy is a collaborative effort with a lot of funny moments for Mos Def and not too-too much of Black's obnoxiousness. The supporting cast includes Danny Glover, and Mia Farrow. The movie follows video store employees Jerry (Black) and Mike (Mos Def) whose videos all become erased. To appease the customers, the duo shoot brief, low-budget versions of the original movies (like Driving Miss Daisy, pictured), which then become major hits in the community.

Woody Allen's New Women

Say what you will about Woody Allen and his sordid relationship history, but the man knows how to cast female actors in great roles. Witness Dianne Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway, Mia Farrow in Hannah and Her Sisters, and - of course - Diane Keaton in Annie Hall. Perhaps not coincidentally, those are also some of my favorite Woody Allen movies.

The director's new muse, it seems, is Scarlett Johansson, who just signed on to star alongside Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in Allen's still-untitled latest film, which begins shooting this summer in Spain. For all the details,

That is her third starring role in his past four films, making Johansson the actress Allen has used most frequently since his early runs with Mia Farrow and Diane Keaton.

While Farrow and Keaton are by far the most famed of Allen's actresses - mainly because he was romantically linked to them - he definitely likes to work with the same actors over and over again. '60s Style Steals the Show at Erin Fetherston

Erin Fetherston's Spring 2012 collection had a girlish, mod vibe, and the beauty look was just as swingin'. Four hairstyles, three lipstick colors, and one shiny nail added up to one cool 1960s theme. "The makeup was inspired by Mia Farrow at Truman Capote's Black and White Ball," MAC makeup artist James Kaliardos said of the charcoal-eyed, lush-lashes look. "It's like the late '60s does the '20s." Meanwhile, Esther Langham (for Beauty.com) led a team of Alterna stylists to create a quartet of soft, textured, teased hairstyles. For the finishing touch, Butter London's Nonie Creme (also for Beauty.com) created glossy, patent-leather-look manicures by combining Tea With the Queen and Pink Ribbon polishes.

Guillermo del Toro Believes "Very, Very Strongly" in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Guillermo del Toro is the force behind this weekend's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and he recently spoke about his involvement with the Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce film during a NYC press day. Troy Nixey directed the scary movie, with del Toro operating behind the scenes as a producer and "presenter." Del Toro discussed what his duties included and how he stuck to his original vision for the picture. He also revealed his favorite movies, admiration for the young actress Bailee Madison, and how he thinks perpetuating the weak-females-in-horror-movies cliche is immoral.

On their film having an R rating despite little sex or profanity: "We shot the movie carefully - no profanity, no sex - and it’s not graphic at all. There’s not a single moment when you see anything gory, but when we asked the MPA, 'What would it need to change?' they said, 'The whole movie. It’s too intense . . . it’s intensity with a child.' And frankly, at that point, they said something really nice! They said, 'Why ruin a perfectly good R-rated movie?' Which I thought was very nice coming from them. So we wore it as a badge of honor."
On working with Bailee: "I think the term 'child actor' is a mistake. They're either actors, or they're not; whatever they are, at any age. If a kid is a real actor, he’s a thrill."
On attaching his name to a movie, despite not directing it: "I only presented three movies, one in Spain and The Orphanage internationally, and this is the third time. I only do it when - (a) I am introducing a filmmaker to the world, but (b) I endorse and say I believe in this movie very, very strongly. For whatever reason, it’s a more risky proposition in one way, but it’s one that I believe needs to continue to support first-time filmmakers. . . . I only do it when I fully believe I was involved in the product in a way that is meaningful."
On his favorite movies: "When DVDs came out I made a solemn promise to my wife that I’m just going to get my 10 favorite movies - which are really 7,000 movies. But instinctively, which may change tomorrow, I’d say Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Erich von Stroheim’s Greed, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Beauty and the Beast. It’s almost impossible to make this list. I’d say all Chaplin and Hitchcock . . . it’s impossible. It’s a horrible dilemma."
