A History of Mermaids in Pop Culture

This is really the Summer of mermaids! It started with the Little Mermaid ride opening at Disneyland and the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and then the waters were disrupted with a full-blown mermaid feud between Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Bette Midler.

The mythological half-human, half-fish ladies have been immortalized in everything from literature to art to iconic films, and I just can't get enough of their sexy, sassy, and oftentimes trouble-making ways. So dive into the underwater world of these mysterious beings with this brief history of mermaids in pop culture.

Tell Mommy: Do You Make Mini Meals?

Whenever I make small treats for my children the classic scene from Mermaids where Winona Ryder's character explains her mother, played by Cher, only makes "fun finger foods" - like "cheeseball pick-me-ups accompanied by miniature franks and for dessert, marshmallow kebabs" - pops into my mind. While I couldn't even guess what goes into a "pick-me-up," there's an undeniable appeal to making mini bite-sized treats for tots. They offer less mess, less leftovers, and can occasionally trick children into eating their veggies. That being said, it's important to teach children to eat like grownups and not expect someone will cut their crust forever. Do you make special bite-sized portions for your hungry brood?

I'm glad that many of you were as excited about this Mermaids recast as I was. The female roles are so meaty, it makes me yearn for similar films to be made today.

Many of your ideas for the sexy and spontaneous Rachel Flax were right on, including fattiecat07's suggestion of Michelle Pfeiffer and dbanner's idea of Marisa Tomei. Several of you picked Elizabeth Perkins, which would be amazing and hilarious.

I got a kick out of jadenirvana's suggestion that Diablo Cody fill Winona Ryder's shoes. yiddidea's suggestion for Ellen Page is pretty spot-on for the role of Charlotte and got me thinking about how similar Page and Ryder are as actors, actually.

I really enjoyed all of your casts, thanks for sharing! But alas, there can only be one winner and l think Baluk slam-dunked the female leads. Congrats to Baluk!

Recast Mermaids and Win a Prize!

Every other Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

Did anyone else love the 1990 flick Mermaids? I loved it. I don't know what it was exactly - maybe the wonderful performance by Cher as a quirky single mom who's only capable of feeding her girls finger food? Winona Ryder at her angsty best? A young, hot, brooding Michael Schoeffling (you know, dreamboat Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles)? Or the adorableness that was an itty-bitty Christina Ricci?

Who would you recast as the drop-dead-gorgeous mother of two, Rachel Flax, who has a hard time with maternal instincts? And we'll need a young actress to portray her frustrated, religion-swapping daughter, Charlotte, who's a bit of an outcast. What about Charlotte's crush, the stoic and silent Joe Porretti? Is there a little actress today that reminds you of a young Christina Ricci? And finally, who would you cast as Lou Landsky (originally played by Bob Hoskins, and why they allowed this DVD cover to be made with his face frozen like that is beyond me), who's no Brad Pitt on the outside, but has a heart of gold?

Jennifer Morrison Talks About the Fairy Tale She Wants on Once Upon a Time and Emma's New Love Interest

Jennifer Morrison plays Emma on Once Upon a Time, the show's reluctant heroine who has been chosen to break the curse of a town full of fairy-tale characters. I chatted with Morrison about the series, and I had to know how she felt about Graham's shocking death and whether we'll ever see him again. We also discussed the upcoming tales we'll get to see on the show, including the story Morrison would love to see play out. BuzzSugar: We were really upset when Graham died; were you sad when you found out it was going to happen?
Jennifer Morrison: Well, we knew what was coming in the story line since the beginning of the season. But all of us were upset because we love Jamie Dornan, and I thought he was just absolutely fabulous in the show. We all were very close, you know? So it felt like a huge loss, not just on the show, but just personally. We were all really close friends, and we still feel that loss. It feels weird with him not being in Vancouver with us.

Buzz: Is there any way that Dornan might return?
JM: The thing is, just because he died in reality doesn't mean that he can't return as the huntsman, because those are flashbacks. So, depending on the structure of the show, and the story we decide to tell, as far as I understand, there's room for him to exist still in fairy-tale land.

Buzz: With him gone, is Emma getting another love interest?
JM: Well, this last episode that aired, there's a stranger that comes to town, played by Eion Bailey, who is in that very last scene in that last episode that aired. I don't know for sure where they're cutting this at, but I know that there is a possibility that this stranger in town could somehow be connected to Emma at some point. Beyond that, I don't really know.
