Grindhouse Loses the Box Office Race

Mediocrity topped curiosity at the box-office this weekend, with two tepidly reviewed holdovers - Blades of Glory and Disney's Meet the Robinsons - landing in the No. 1 and 2 spots with $23 million and $17 million in ticket sales, respectively. Both movies beat out Grindhouse, the groundbreaking double feature directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, which earned just $11 million.

Grindhouse getting trumped by Blades of Glory doesn't surprise me; after all, it's easier for hordes of movie-going teens to flock to a PG-13 flick than two hard-core R movie. What's tragic is that Grindhouse didn't even manage to win the race against the new Ice Cube movie, Are We Done Yet?, which sounds fairly dreadful. What movies did you guys see this weekend?

Michelle Obama Takes Grandma and Her Girls to Africa

Michelle Obama landed in South Africa last night for her second official trip abroad by herself since Barack was elected. The first lady will be joined by her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, for the six-day tour of South Africa and Botswana, along with her mother, Marian Robinson, and her niece and nephew. Michelle will meet with girls and young women, and the focus of the trip is youth leadership, but today the crew met with one of the continent's older leaders, 92-year-old Nelson Mandela. Michelle and her family also visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation, where they examined Mandela's significant personal photographs and journals.

Later this week, Michelle will use her popularity in Africa to call attention to health issues like HIV/AIDS, and she'll attend a Friday tribute to girls who have overcome adversity in Botswana. See some photos of the trip so far now.

Kate Hudson Opens Up About "Tempting Fate" For a Pregnancy With Matthew Bellamy

Kate Hudson scored the May cover of InStyle and in an accompanying interview chats all about her new movie, Something Borrowed, and the new phase of life she's entering. She spoke candidly about meeting her boyfriend, Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, and how they weren't entirely trying to avoid having a baby. The actress is already mom to 7-year-old Ryder Robinson, and she seems to be loving being pregnant - there have been plenty of Kate Hudson bikini moments over the last few months! Kate had this to say about Matthew and the pregnancy:

On first meeting Matthew: "[I was] watching Radiohead's Thom Yorke with a guy I knew from high school, who introduced me to Matthew. We realized we had met a few years earlier, in Australia. Then I got distracted and said, 'I've got to find my friends; I don't know where they went.' He just looked at me and said, 'Come on, I'll take care of you.' That's when I went, 'Wait a minute, who are you?'"
On starting to date Matthew: "In the beginning I felt like, OK, this is going to be heavy. Am I prepared for this? Because it had been a while, and I wasn't looking for that. But I just couldn't stay away. I wanted to talk to him and be with him all the time. On our first dates, we would take long walks and talk the entire day."
On sort of planning for the baby: "Well, it wasn't like we didn't know what we were doing. There were no ovulation kits involved. We were tempting fate, and it worked. . . . I didn't think I was going to have another kid until I was maybe 33 – that was in the back of my mind before I met Matthew. But we were so in love when it happened, it was just so exciting for both of us."

Kate Middleton picked a breathtaking Alexander McQueen gown for her royal wedding dress. Kate, who is now Princess Catherine - or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge - arrived at Westminster Abbey just minutes ago and walked down the aisle to meet her groom, Prince William. The gorgeous bride stunned in an English and French Chantilly lace gown designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. She wore ivory duchesse satin shoes that were also handmade by the team at McQueen. Kate accessorized the custom look with a silk tulle veil and a Cartier tiara, which was lent to Kate by the queen. The bride wore diamond earrings, a gift from her parents, by Robinson Pelham, which were inspired by the Middleton family's new coat of arms. She carried a bouquet of myrtle, lily of the valley, sweet william, and hyacinth, all of which hold significance to the royal family and the Middleton family. Kate's sister, Pippa, also wore an ivory McQueen gown, and earrings from the same jeweler, and assisted the bride with her train. Kate met Prince William at the altar, where he whispered "you look beautiful" to his stunning future wife.

All products are blended and made from premium ingredients, and both the home and personal fragrance lines feature sleek, award-winning packaging.

I had the chance to sit down with Apothia's founder, Ron Robinson, a couple of years ago. He was warm and friendly, and genuinely excited about his line. (Really, he was like a giddy kid unwrapping presents as he told me about each product.) He's a perfectionist when it comes to finding the precise notes to create the scents, and his work pays off-the fragrances are multifaceted and genuinely unique.

For a detailed description of each of the Apothia aromas, read more If you've shopped at Barneys New York, you've probably seen the line of home candles ($46), which burn for 60 hours. I have one and find that to spread the scent to my apartment, I only need to leave it burning for 20 minutes or so. The rest of the Apothia Collection consists of aromatic diffusers ($78), eau de parfum ($30–$75), body wash ($28) and body lotion ($30). These are the available scents, but note that not all of them are available in all forms.

VELVET ROPE is inspired by a dry martini, spiked with notes of vanilla, jasmine and grapefruit. (I have this in a candle, and my guy friends always ask about the smell.) It's available as a candle and in the body care/personal fragrance line.
IF is more distinctly feminine. It's largely a citrus scent, but it builds to a floral, then finishes with musk. It's available only in the body care/personal fragrance line.
L is for all my Sapphic girls out there. Inspired by The L Word, it's something of an earthy scent, with notes of green violet leaf and woods. It's not available as a candle, but it's available as a fragrance.

PLUSH is made from citrus notes of mandarin, lime and pomelo.
WAVE is symbolic of a morning at the beach, smelling of driftwood, flowers, sea grass, white grapefruit, mandarin and yuzu.
SCENE is the ultimate urban guilty pleasure. Think glittering lights and sexy flashes of skin. This scent is made from fig, juniper berry and pear nectar.
CHRISMUKKAH reminds me of the OC! It smells of fresh green fir, clove, and ocean air.
SPIRITUAL is meant to be calming and peaceful, with hippie-chic notes of patchouli, amber, sandalwood, green mint and basil.
SOUL sounds really sexy to me. It has notes of African ginger, mahogany, Taboti wood and Grains of Paradise.
JUICED is all about health. This fresh scent is energizing, with notes of sparkling red currant, geranium and tomato leaf.
BRONZED is the perfect name for an LA fragrance, yes?Orange flower, petitgrain, bergamot and jasmine make up this scent.
CASA is something I'll have to tell, uh, Casa about. It is made from Casablanca lilies, newly cut grass, and fresh air.
