Breast Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight On: Lifetime's "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" Campaign

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I'll be featuring people and products from pop culture that have to do with the disease - those who have beaten it, been touched by it, or are working toward finding a cure.

Today, the spotlight is on Lifetime Television, which has launched its 13th annual "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" campaign this month. The network has recruited several stars to record public service announcements about breast cancer awareness that will air throughout this month; Whoopi Goldberg, Reba McEntire, Fran Drescher, Daisy Fuentes and several NFL players are just a few of the stars involved.

The network also recruited R&B singer Mya - who became active in the breast cancer awareness community after her mother was diagnosed with the disease in 1998 - to record a special theme song for this year's campaign. The song, "My Bra," is based around the idea that we can be supportive, uplifting presences - er, "bras" - in each other's lives. The song will be featured in a new Lifetime movie, Matters of Life and Dating, starring Ricki Lake, who also has talked about the ways breast cancer has affected her.

When you’re prone to migraines you’re forced to think through whether or not something you do will invite a headache into your life. Exercise is definitely one of those things. Should you skip a workout because you feel a migraine coming on? Or is it better to push through in the hopes a little sweat will make you feel better?

Most headache specialists recommend exercise and an increase in overall physical activity to their patients. However, to date, there’s skimpy evidence to support the idea that working out actually guards against migraine attacks. A few studies have shown that taking regular exercise can reduce the severity, though not the number of headaches.

Sex sells - especially for Super Bowl ads - and year after year, major companies try to get away with the raciest, steamiest ads possible, often at the expense of women. Cars, food, technology - it doesn't matter what the product is; these ads throw in a hot, skin-baring woman for distraction and buzz. Ahead of the big game tomorrow, let's look back at some of the most scandalous ads in the last few years. And maybe one day we'll see more Super Bowl ads that show women some respect.

Skechers: "Kim Kardashian For Shape-Ups"

Kim teases her trainer by telling him he's "the best she's ever had, but it's not working out," and she prefers her Shape-Up Skechers over him. This 2011 ad is confusing and mismarketed, because it's eye candy for men, yet targeting women. Plus, no woman in her right mind would pass up that smokin' trainer for a pair of sneakers.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "If/Then"

Last year we had the Grey's Anatomy musical episode, and this season it's the alternate-reality episode. That's right: as Meredith ponders on the veracity of the phrase "meant to be," we get to see what could have been - or in this case, what was always destined to be. Though this is a filler episode if I ever saw one, it's still pretty fun to see the characters go down different paths (well, except for Jackson, who pretty much stays the same).

Photography Lessons Learned From Eve Arnold

American photojournalist Eve Arnold passed away last week at the age of 99. A Philadelphia native, Arnold spent her life traveling, bringing back images from remote and dangerous parts of the world for Life magazine (among others), which earned her the title of the first woman to join famed Magnum Photos agency in 1955. Arnold didn't want to be known as a "woman photographer" though, and just as well, she may be most renowned for building quite the rapport with her subjects. She told BBC in a 2002 interview that "if you're careful with people and if you respect their privacy, they will offer part of themselves that you can use." It's this attitude that helped her capture some of the most intimate images of Marilyn Monroe to date, which she compiled into a book dedicated to the actress.

The Five-Year Engagement Trailer: Segel and Blunt Can't Get to the Altar

The trailer for The Five-Year Engagement has so much going for it that I'm almost afraid to jinx it. First, we've got Jason Segel and Emily Blunt as Tom and Violet, an adorable, engaged couple that are continually delaying their wedding date when other life matters (like job relocation) get in the way. Secondly, there's a promising supporting cast that includes Chris Pratt as Tom's BFF and Alison Brie as Violet's little sister. Third, the trailer has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments but still seems like a relatable romantic comedy.

My only complaint is that the trailer may give away too much, but I'm already a fan of the main characters; Tom is a lot like How I Met Your Mother's Marshall (a lovable, fun-loving kinda guy) and it's refreshing to see Blunt letting loose and showing her goofy side. Let's Go There Asks Women: What Does It Mean to Be Modern?

Of 742 women, seven in 10 women (70 percent) would change something about their current hormonal birth control. Amongst those who would change something, 43 percent would change having to take it every day.

What gives? It's great that women aren't afraid to make a needed change in their personal lives. However, finding the right fit is important in all aspects of life, especially your health. "The key to getting through a breakup is accepting that you are going to be a crazy maniac for the next three to six months of your life," says Elina Furman, relationship expert and author of Kiss and Run: The Single, Picky and Indecisive Girl's Guide to Overcoming Her Fear of Commitment. "There's no skipping steps so even if you think you're over it right away, you're probably not."

Drunken Denial: A nightmarish state with equal parts alcohol and magical thinking.

"After Andy broke up with me I just didn't accept it," says Eliza, 29, who dated her ex for two years before he called it quits. "I continued to call him exactly as I had before, we continued to have sex and then he would push me away and remind me we were broken up. It was terrible."

As with most matters of the heart, we have nothing but biology to blame for the magnetic pull that drags us to an ex's front doorstep immediately after a breakup.

"Initially there is often shock," says sex and relationship therapist Ian Kerner. "When you've gotten used to routines and patterns, those routines are hardwired and hardcoded in our brains. There's a sense of wanting to resume them."
Sweaty Mania: A confusing state, during which you experience intense feelings of regret, euphoria and guilt. As reality filters in, you find yourself wildly grasping for relief. You're injected with confusing and invigorating energy.
"People do a lot of crazy things during this stage," says Kerner. "I always tell women to watch out for casual sex because men don't produce oxytocin, so it's easier for them to compartmentalize a one-nighter or something casual. For women, it's more difficult. You immediately want to bond with who you are physical with."

Use your newfound recklessness to do something that terrifies you. But pass on the one-night stand! Sign up for improv acting, maybe, or go skydiving.

"Staying busy was really the best cure for me," says Amanda, 26. After she and her boyfriend of a year split, Amanda replayed each and every one of their arguments and endlessly beat herself up until she found a new outlet for her energy. "I trained for a marathon," she says. "I swear it was just as good, if not better, than therapy.”
