Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, George Clooney, and More Take Hollywood Film Awards Stage

The Hollywood Film Awards took place last night at LA's Beverly Hilton Hotel, and once the famous guests like George Clooney and Stacy Keibler left the red carpet, the show began inside the ballroom. George was onstage to accept his Hollywood Actor Award from his Descendants costar, Beau Bridges, and humbly told the audience of his award, "I am very lucky. I'm a lucky man." My Week With Marilyn star Michelle Williams, meanwhile, won the female counterpart with the Hollywood Actress Award. Ben Affleck, sporting his long Argo locks, made a special appearance to honor Hollywood Cinematographer Award recipient Emmanuel Lubezki. The men worked together on Terrence Malick's still-untitled upcoming picture.

The many ladies of The Help, including Emma Stone, Allison Janney, Viola Davis, Cicely Tyson, Ahna O'Reilly, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Mary Steenburgen were together to accept the Hollywood Ensemble Award and to pose with their new statues backstage. Further nods went to Diablo Cody with the Hollywood Screenwriter Award, Moneyball's Bennett Miller with the Hollywood Director Award, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt with the Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award. Joseph was handed his prize by his Dark Knight Rises costar Anne Hathaway, who was decked out in a floral Erdem dress.

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen Increase Their Curb Appeal

Actor couple Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen have purchased an absolutely charming home in LA's Brentwood neighborhood for $3.11 million. The four-bedroom, three-and-one-half bath home has a great, wide, columned front porch met by a stone walkway and beautiful landscaping out front; it's a far cry from the sequestered, gated celebrity homes we often see. Inside, the home is very nicely decorated, with lots of color and comfortable furnishings; if I were them, I'd want to buy it as is! The bones of the house are wonderful, too, with plenty of built-in cabinetry, dozens of windows, and handsome hardwood floors, as well as updated appliances like a Viking stove. Did You Hear About the Morgans?: Nothing New

It's probably predictable of me to tell you that romantic comedy/mild thriller Did You Hear About the Morgans? is itself predictable. Like a lot of lazy rom-coms, it's also rife with cliches and suffering from an ultimately lame plot: a married couple on the outs (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) view a murder and is shipped off to Wyoming as part of the witness protection program.

As flimsy as that sounds in print, it plays out even sillier on screen: the victim Paul and Meryl Morgan see is a man with a knife sticking out of his back, like Clue. Plus, it's a limp contrivance to push the troubled married couple back together, which you know is going to happen by the end of the movie.

But, the film is not without its merits; to see what else I thought, just

read more. Though it's tough to redeem such a poorly put together film, the cast is one strong point. I'll watch Hugh Grant play the same character over and over again just to hear his accent and British humor. Sarah Jessica Parker is always welcome too, even if all I see in her Meryl Morgan is Carrie Bradshaw with a workaholic streak. There's not much sexual chemistry between the two leads, but you can look past it since they're individually so irresistible. Grant and Parker really work with what they're given, which are two very insubstantial characters. Blame the script - the stereotypical Manhattanites seem like they're written by someone with a very cursory knowledge of New York (think jokes about Chinese food delivery). The Wyoming residents don't have it any better - they love to shoot guns, smoke, and eat meat, much to the chagrin of the transplanted city folk. Again, the only thing that saves these characters is the actors who are inhabiting them: a luminous Mary Steenburgen, Sam Elliott, and everyone's favorite TV grandpa, Wilford Brimley. (Other cast members aren't so lucky: Elisabeth Moss is wasted in the role of Meryl's ball-busting assistant). The reason you may actually want to watch Did You Hear About the Morgans? is not that it's any great feat of movie-making (it's assuredly not). You'll want to see it if you do like romantic comedies, because it's exactly like everything you've seen. That kind of redundancy can be comforting.

SJP Has SATC Support at Her New York Morgans Premiere

Sarah Jessica Parker stepped out in black for the NYC premiere of Did You Hear About The Morgans? last night. SJP looked gorgeous in bright pink with costar Hugh Grant at the London screening last week, and this time she had some girls to pose with too. Fellow members of the Sex and the City fab foursome Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon joined in the fun. On the red carpet, SJP had nothing but kind things to say about Miley Cyrus who she joked is surprisingly tall "like a Viking" and is making a cameo in the anticipated sequel. Most of you weren't loving the first SATC2 tease poster, but it's still a thrill to see the ladies together on the red carpet. Sarah has this movie to support before it's out on Friday, and a few more months until SATC2 mania sets in leading up to the May release.

Movie Preview: Timberlake and Bridges in The Open Road

Jeff Bridges and Justin Timberlake make a pretty cute father-son pair in The Open Road, a road trip movie that also stars Kate Mara and Mary Steenburgen. It looks predictable (a mismatched pair is forced to hit the road together and after some wacky adventures they learn to respect each other!), but the cast is still rather adorable. Bridges seems to be doing much of the heavy lifting, though Timberlake seems to do alright as the average guy who has to deal with his estranged (and strange) father.

I won't be rushing out to see this one when it opens Aug. 28, but it'll probably be a fine rental somewhere down the line. What do you think? To take a look at the trailer,

Step Brothers: Middle-Aged Men Behaving Badly

Step Brothers is yet another entry into the canon of movies that have resulted from the collaboration between director Adam McKay, star Will Ferrell, and (. . . wait for it) producer Judd Apatow. After mining all kinds of scenarios for comedy (anchormen, race car drivers, the '70s in general, etc.), even these funny guys have to hit the bottom of the barrel sometime. I imagine the concept that would result from that rock-bottom brainstorming session would go something like this: "How about instead of making a movie about a guy who has a grownup job but sometimes acts like a childish loser, we literally just make a movie about a childish loser?" In other words, it would look a lot like Step Brothers.

And so it goes, with Ferrell of course taking the overgrown-child role. Add to the mix a crew of esteemed supporting actors including Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins, and you end up with a familiar comedy that explores some unfamiliar territory (Ferrell's private parts - I'm not even joking). The movie had me buckled over in my seat laughing about half the time, but I spent the rest of it horrified and a little bored with how standard it all felt. Stripped of all the bravado that his moronic characters usually boast, Ferrell's Brennan Huff is actually humble, painfully aware that he is the world's biggest loser (he still lives at home with his mom even though he's 40-something years old). His mom (Steenburgen) speculates that things went wrong for her son after some public humiliation by other kids, led by Brennan's older brother Derek (the pitch-perfect Adam Scott). Then a middle-aged fellow in a similar boat, Dale Doback (John C. Reilly), is forced to move in with Brennan when their parents get married. The two immediately resent each other - and by "resent," I mean Dale tells Brennan how much he hates him, and then they quite literally go at each other's throats. For the most part, the shtick works, and the two stars have great chemistry together. And when Ferrell whips himself into an angry, manic, f-bomb-laden frenzy full of sex jokes and scatological humor, it's occasionally worth a chuckle. Mostly, though, the act feels tired: The novelty of Ferrell flying off the hook like that has worn off for me by now. It's a little different when Reilly does it; we're not as used to seeing him channel immaturity and comic rage. But even then, the infantile tantrums that resort to third-grade jokes get old fast. But, when the movie is actually working and thinking at how to make us laugh (rather than resorting to the tried-and-true stuff), it's really, really good. The fellas stay true to their characters, and in a lot of moments the natural humor inherent in their situation comes through. For example, Brennan is believed to be a great singer but is hesitant to perform for anyone. When he finally does sing for his new brother, Dale is so moved that he describes the gorgeousness of Brennan's voice as "a combination between Fergie and Jesus." Later, when we're introduced to the d-bag that is Brennan's tormenting brother Derek, he's driving his family along in a car, demanding they sing a song together and that everyone's harmonies are in key and timed perfectly. It's one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Ferrell is a talented guy. He's especially great when he puts a little effort into making us laugh and saves the angry meltdowns and the exposing of body parts for when it really counts. Justin Timberlake Hits the Open Road With Jeff Bridges

Southern boy Justin Timberlake will return to his roots (er, nearby his roots, since he's from Tennessee) when he begins filming his next movie The Open Road in Louisiana later this month. Timberlake will play "a young man trying to reconnect with his father, a legendary athlete, as he struggles to get him home to his ailing mother’s bedside." Most likely, Bridges plays the father and Mary Steenburgen will play the ailing mother.

We know Timberlake can handle physical humor, goofball comedy, gritty drama, whatever Shrek the Third is classified as, and of course, pop princedom. It will be interesting to see him try his hand at what sounds like a heartfelt drama.

Also, he gets to star alongside the Dude! Lucky guy.

Rooney Mara Breaks From Dragon Tattoo to Give Her Real-Life Leading Man a Kiss Goodbye

Rooney Mara gave her boyfriend, 27-year-old Charlie McDowell, a hug and a kiss yesterday before he boarded a train leaving the Stockholm station. She's in Sweden continuing to work on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series, though we got a great look at Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander last weekend with the debut of the first film's trailer. She and costar Daniel Craig also steam up the controversial first Girl With the Dragon Tattoo poster, Rooney especially since she appears to be naked in it. Charlie and 26-year-old Rooney have been dating for over a year, though he's best known as the son of Mary Steenburgen, who's now married to Ted Danson, and her first husband, Malcolm McDowell.

Emma, Bryce, Viola, and More Premiere The Help and Celebrate With Fried Chicken

The ladies - and gentlemen - from The Help convened in LA last night for their big premiere. Emma Stone wore Chanel to pose on the red carpet, telling us all about how proud she was to have worked with a great group of women. She was joined before the screening by her Kate Spade-clad costar Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain in Oscar de la Renta, Allison Janney in Dolce & Gabbana, and Viola Davis in Escada. Kathryn Stockett, who wrote the book on which the film is based, joined in for a group photo alongside other actresses like Ahna O'Reilly, Mary Steenburgen, Octavia Spencer, and Sissy Spacek. Producer Nate Berkus ventured out as well, saying he made sure the set featured authentic '60s details. Reviews of The Help call out the amazing performances from the film's leads, Viola and Octavia in particular. The ladies moved together to the afterparty where Emma Stone chowed down on Southern dishes like fried chicken, pecan cupcakes, and sweet tea.
