2009 Tribeca Film Festival Spotlight: Stay Cool

I've been perusing the long list of interesting-looking movies scheduled for this year's Tribeca Film Festival, which starts this week. Some of them, like Stay Cool, are already earning some buzz, and I'm anxious to find out what festivalgoers think once they've screened.

The intriguing cast of Stay Cool includes Chevy Chase, Winona Ryder, Hilary Duff, Sean Astin, and Jon Cryer as well as the man of my dreams, Sawyer (or, Josh Holloway of Lost).

The comedy, written and directed by the Polish brothers, "centers on a successful author (Mark Polish) who is forced to confront an unrequited high school crush (Winona Ryder) when he returns home to deliver a commencement address to graduating seniors. Shasta O'Neil (Hilary Duff), a sexy high school senior flirts with the visiting author and invites him to the prom."

Josh Holloway Joins the Cast of Stay Cool

Now, I was interested in the initial movie news concerning Stay Cool, when the cast included Chevy Chase, Winona Ryder, Hilary Duff, Sean Astin and Jon Cryer. But now that they're adding my beloved Sawyer (Josh Holloway, of Lost), my interest has naturally morphed into complete fascination.

The movie, described as a "knowing-your-age comedy" follows "a successful author (Mark Polish) who is forced to confront an unrequited high school crush, Scarlet Smith (Ryder), when he returns home to deliver a commencement address to graduating seniors."

Duff plays Shasta O'Neill, "a sexy high school senior who flirts with the visiting author and invites him to the prom." Holloway's character is "the former high school jock and ex-boyfriend to Ryder's Scarlet."

This collection of people is hilariously bizarre in my eyes, and I can't wait to see what comes out of this project. Will you be first in line at the theaters along with me?

Stay Cool, a comedy by twin brothers Michael and Mark Polish (The Astronaut Farmer, Northfork) just added Hilary Duff (who stays cool this summer in real life by going shopping) to the cast, which already included Chevy Chase, Jon Cryer, Winona Ryder and Sean Astin.

How cool is this character name?
Duff's character is named Shasta O'Neill in the movie, which has been deemed a "knowing-your-age comedy." It follows "a successful author (Polish) who is forced to confront an unrequited high school crush (Ryder) when he returns home to deliver a commencement address to graduating seniors." Shasta (seriously, that name!) is "a sexy high school senior who flirts with the visiting author and invites him to the prom."

When do you think Hilary Duff will stop getting the "sexy ____" roles?
She was recently seen in War, Inc. opposite John Cusack as the "sexy international pop starlet" and now she's going back to high school as a sexy student. I guess use it if you got it. . . ?

12 Items You Should Not Buy in Bulk

When grocery shopping, there are certain items you should buy in bulk to get that discounted price that will save you money. However, if you pick the wrong items, you may end up wasting cash if you don't use them up before their expiration date. Here are a couple of items you should refrain from buying in bulk:

Baking powder. If you don't bake all the time, you might want to skip out on buying baking powder in bulk, as it lasts up to six months to a year.
Beer. If you're buying beer in bulk for a party, know that the beverage lasts for just three to six months. You might want to limit yourself and make sure that you're not buying too much.
Bleach. Don't buy too much bleach at one time, as this cleaning agent has a relatively short shelf life of three to six months. It starts to degrade after the six-month mark and loses its effectiveness.
Brown rice. People assume that brown rice has a long shelf life and can be stored for as long as possible. In actuality, brown rice doesn't last too long - just six months - because of its oil content.
Candy and unhealthy snacks. Although you may save money buying candy and unhealthy snacks in bulk, having a lot of these items around may cause you to overeat, which will be a detriment to your health. Saving money is not worth the cost to your health.
Cooking oil. You'd be surprised to learn that cooking oil has a shelf life of about a year. Oils and fats tend to go bad really quickly, so that's a factor to keep in mind when shopping. If you buy too much cooking oil, some of the oil may go rancid, which is said to cause increased rates of heart disease, cancer, and other health problems. You definitely want to make sure the oil you have is fresh.

Nail polish brand Essie has come up with a clever (and generous) way to support One Day Without Shoes, an initiative started by ubiquitous shoe brand TOMS to raise awareness about the millions of children at risk for disease and infection because they don't have adequate footwear. Essie designed the pastel azure nail color up top, aptly named Barefoot in Blue, to encourage people to go shoeless on the day, April 10. And starting March 7, it's giving away 15,000 bottles.

If you want to give your feet their day in the sun and score some free polish, too, you just have to visit the Essie or TOMS Facebook pages to sign up. Every day for 15 days, 1,000 people who enter will win a bottle of Barefoot in Blue. "We wanted to come up with something that would really spark conversation and bring attention to the campaign - a new rallying cry for an important cause," says Essie Weingarten, the polish brand's founder. "There's no better way to do that than with blue toes."

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012

We can always count on Oscar de la Renta for red-carpet perfect dresses and the most elevated execution of ladylike wares, and this season was no exception to the rule. Marked by a definitive nod to the refined woman, Oscar upped his fantasy fashion quotient with a collection positively dripping in jewels. Teardrop-shaped pearl earrings, antique-inspired brooches, embellished sheaths, satin-and-diamante headbands, and even jewel-print graphics popped up on the runway. In addition to the dazzle factor, the designer honed in on updating his classic tweed jackets, perfectly tailored circle skirts, and "ladies who lunch" suits for both the younger, daring crew and the more sophisticated set. Get Ashley Greene's Pretty People's Choice Makeup Look

When it comes to pretty, polished makeup looks, Ashley Greene should win an award for perfect shade pairings. At the People's Choice Awards, for instance, the Twilight star looked absolutely radiant coupling bronze eye makeup and subtly stained red lips. Vanessa Scali, who created the look, shares tips on how you can get the style at home, using products from Mark (for which Ashley is an ambassador):

Eyes: "Ashley wanted a hint of smolder in the eyes but didn't want anything dark or overdone," explained Scali. To accomplish that feel, Scali started by applying the brand's I-Mark Metallics Custom Pick shadow in Truffle on Ashley's lid and under the bottom lashes, blending for a sheer effect at the crease, and extending it outward to elongate. She then applied brown and black liners for a "feline resemblance."

Cheeks and lips: Then, to bring it all together, Scali used Just Pinched blush in Peachy on the apples of Ashley's cheeks. And for that lightly stained finish, Scali used a lipstick. "I applied Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Cha Cha to the center of Ashley's lips, gently pressing the color in and blending outward toward the edge, giving the lips a pop of color but keeping the line soft and easy," she said.
