Cate Blanchett Looking to Adapt Cancer Vixen

This is some of the coolest movie news I've seen in a while: Cate Blanchett is apparently hoping to adapt Marisa Acocella Marchetto’s frank and funny memoir Cancer Vixen for the big screen. Here's more:

"It's about a cartoonist's look at her contracting cancer," Blanchett observed of the book, which she acquired the rights to through her Working Title Films production company shortly after its release. "And the process of getting cancer."

For obvious reasons, Cancer Vixen isn't the type of film that Hollywood views as a potential blockbuster. So the Curious Case of Benjamin Button star is currently developing it slowly and carefully - and says the biggest difficulty at the moment is finding a director who could properly handle the tonal mix of drama and humor. "It's a tragic-comic look at it," she explained. "So it needs a really particular, special filmmaker. I hope that happens."

Blanchett also noted that she would gladly take the lead role, which seems pretty darn perfect to me. Then again, there isn't much this lady can't do - a fact she has in common with the Cancer Vixen herself.

Movie Preview: War, Inc.

War, Inc. is one of those head-scratchers where I'm at a loss as to whether or not this movie will be good, or even watchable. Starring John Cusack (who's also a credited writer on the film), it looks like one of those cynical, dark comedies where the goal is to make you think, "That's so absurd! The world isn't like that! Or is it?" See also: Wag the Dog.

Signs pointing to good/watchable movie include: both Cusacks on screen together (I love seeing Joan again!), smart twists on current events, and a darkly romantic sub-plot between the lovely Marisa Tomei and John Cusack.

Signs pointing to maybe not-so-watchable are: a whole lot going on - lots of characters, effects, music, bombs, journalists, etc.; and Hilary Duff playing a "Centeral Asian pop star" with an accent that is just. . .strange. Plus, she drops a scorpion down her pants.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight On: Cancer Vixen

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I'll be featuring people and products from pop culture that have to do with the disease - those who have beaten it, have been touched by it, or are working toward finding a cure.

Today's spotlight is on Cancer Vixen, the alternately hilarious and horrifying memoir by Marisa Acocella Marchetto, a cartoonist for Glamour and The New Yorker. She was leading a decidedly fabulous life - hot fiancé, successful artistic career, kicky shoes - when a breast cancer diagnosis cast doubt on everything.

Acocella Marchetto holds nothing back in this memoir, depicting her "everything's fine" face as a dopey smile, her mother ("(s)mother") as a lovable but annoying hypochondriac, her friends as well-meaning gossips who wanted nothing but the best for their friend, and her cancer cells as little green blobs giving her the finger. Cancer Vixen focuses on surviving a scary diagnosis, but it's also a story about love, friendship, success, and what happens when life suddenly throws up a roadblock you never saw coming. Like Kris Carr, the filmmaker behind the documentary Crazy Sexy Cancer, Acocella Marchetto has created something creative, entertaining, and wickedly funny out of a very dark experience - and that's truly an inspiration.
