Box Office: Fast Five Steps on the Gas to Break Records

Ladies and gentleman, Fast Five has started the box office's engines! In its opening weekend, the fourth sequel in the car racing franchise opened at number one, raking in $83.6 million to claim the title of the biggest opening of 2011. It's also the most any of the Fast and the Furious films has made in its first weekend.

It zoomed past the winner of the last couple of weeks, Rio, which came in second with $14.4 million. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family swooped into the next spot with $10 million, while Robert Pattison's drama Water For Elephants pulled into fourth with $9.1 million. Another new release, Prom, just barely made it into the top five with a mere $5 million.

Box Office: Rio Soars Above the Competition

It was another big weekend for animated film Rio, which nailed the number one spot at the box office for the second week in a row with $26.8 million. It beat out a couple of new releases, like Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, which pulled in $25.8 million, and Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon's circus romance Water For Elephants, which earned $17.5 million in third place.

Hop managed to make it to number four with $12.5 million - not surprising since it was Easter weekend. Finally, Scream 4 just squeaked into the top five with a total of $7.2 million in its second week of release.

In this earnest high school comedy, Aimee Teegarden stars as an overachieving straight-A student, Nova, who heads the prom committee. When an unfortunate accident ruins the decor she's been working on for the dance, the principal assigns rebellious student Jesse (Thomas McDonell) to help her rebuild the props. The movie also focuses on some of their fellow students as the class prepares for their big night. While you may know what to expect from the story, the film offers a cute look at teenage romance. DVD extras include a blooper reel and seven music videos.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family

Tyler Perry returns as titular character Madea in this dramedy about a family facing a number of problems. The sassy matriarch rallies around her niece (Loretta Devine) as she experiences a health scare, and offers her support to other members of the family as they navigate issues ranging from a failing marriage to the temptation to deal drugs. Madea's antics may feel familiar to audiences who have seen films in the franchise before, but fans of the raucous humor won't be disappointed. DVD extras include four featurettes, including "Madea's Family Tree" and "By-Reen: The Baby Mama From Hell."

This past Easter weekend may have been full of candy, colored eggs, and feasts, but a holiday is also the perfect opportunity to hit the movies. Did you make it to the theater? There were a couple of new releases, like Water For Elephants and Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, that I'd love to hear your thoughts on if you saw them. And considering that Hop was also in theaters, I'm wondering if anyone made it a festive experience by seeing an Easter bunny movie on Easter.

Let me know your thoughts on the flicks you saw - I'm especially curious to hear what you legions of Robert Pattinson fans made of his non-Twilight drama.
