TV Tonight: DJ AM's Gone Too Far

After the surprising death of DJ AM (Adam Goldstein), no one was sure what would happen to Gone Too Far, his MTV documentary about addiction. Would it be wrong to air it, since it was discovered that he was abusing drugs? Or is it a cautionary tale that could encourage others to seek treatment? Your feelings were mixed, although a small majority of you thought the network should continue on with the program. After receiving the blessing of his family, MTV finally premieres the eight-episode series tonight.

The show follows AM as he stages interventions with friends and relatives of young twenty-somethings using heroin and other drugs. It's a tough topic to cover - especially given the surrounding circumstances - but judging by the trailer, it looks like MTV handles it with the appropriate respect. The footage actually gave me a few goosebumps - it's eerie to see Goldstein helping others overcome the problems that led to his own demise.

Who Was Your Favorite Performer at Last Night's VMAs?

We've already talked about the moonman winners at last night's MTV VMAs and the A-list beauty and fashion looks that were on the red carpet, but what did you think of the performances?

I know some of you were unsure about tuning in this year, but I'm so glad I did, if for no other reason than to see Janet Jackson perform "Scream" as a tribute to Michael. Lady Gaga was over-the-top as always with her bloody rendition of "Paparazzi," and Pink cranked it up a notch with an actual high-wire acrobatic act. And since Jay-Z has been at the forefront of my mind lately, you know I was psyched to see him close out the show with Alicia Keys belting it out at the piano.

So many great artists, so hard to choose! Which one was your favorite?

More Parenthood Planned For MTV: A 16 and Pregnant Spinoff

Spinning off of its reality series 16 and Pregnant, MTV is next producing Teen Mom, which will examine not just the issues of being a pregnant teen, but all the challenges that come after the delivery. With 16 and Pregnant, each episode serves as a sort of miniature documentary following a teenager from early stages of pregnancy all the way through delivery, and we get a brief glimpse at how life is different for the teen once a baby enters her life. Teen Mom will "look back at the teens featured on Pregnant and see how they're facing the challenges of their first year of motherhood. Each installment will interweave the developing stories of the new moms."

I've seen several episodes of 16 and Pregnant and I actually find it riveting. I think the illustration/animated stuff in between scenes is a little hokey, and some of the parts that show the worst moments during labor are grueling to watch, but overall it's interesting. When some of the episodes have ended I have found myself wondering how the new mom and/or new family will do in the future, so I'll most likely check out Teen Mom.

If you've never seen 16 and Pregnant or if you'd like to catch some re-airings, MTV is having a "Labor Day" (yuk yuk) marathon on Monday.

Teen Wolf Gets a Remake Too

I hope you're not tired of reboots of your favorite movies, because the hits just keep on coming. MTV has ordered a pilot for a Teen Wolf TV series. Apparently, the show will be "fresh" and "very different from the original," with a vibe similar to An American Werewolf in Paris.

I could barely stomach Teen Wolf Too the first time I saw it, since I was convinced that nobody could ever take Michael J. Fox's place. (Of course, now I find it hilarious to see a young Jason Bateman as the lead). To be fair, this isn't necessarily the worst remake idea I've ever heard. The high-school setting could actually translate well to the small screen, and at least it's a break from the vampire craze. I'm just not sure MTV will do justice to the original, especially since the network hasn't exactly churned out groundbreaking scripted shows in the past. Will you tune in or would you rather keep your memories of the classic '80s film untainted?

MTV Takes My Super Sweet 16 to a New Level

Have you ever watched MTV's My Super Sweet 16 and found yourself saying, "Wow, what a nightmare"? Well it's about to get even scarier - MTV has ordered a made for TV movie based on the show, but with a horror film twist. My Super Pyscho Sweet Sixteen will tell the story of an upscale birthday bash turned bloodbath when a serial killer enters the equation.

If slasher movies aren't your thing, MTV's got two other not-quite-original films on the way. Turn the Beat Around will be the dance movie du jour, in addition to an unnamed project about a cheerleader who turns a geek into a popular kid.

Back in the day I enjoyed MTV's 2Gether a little more than I'd like to admit (you plus me equals us!) but I'm feeling iffy about these new ones. Then again, it could be kinda fun to watch those bratty teenagers from My Super Sweet 16 get their just desserts.

American Version of Skins Coming to MTV

If you've ever seen the UK teen series Skins (with Dev Patel!), you know it puts the "scandalous lives" of the Gossip Girl kids to shame with its boundary-pushing scenes and language. Now, somehow MTV will adapt the series for American audiences. Here's more on the US version of the show:

MTV says it will continue the original show's production model using teenagers to help write the series and unknown age-appropriate actors to star. Co-creator Brian Elsley will be writing and executive producing the U.S. version. The producers intend to set the show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Liz Gateley, senior VP, MTV Series Development said, "Having personally pursued the U.K. project for almost two years, I am beyond thrilled to bring it to MTV in the U.S. We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth."

Like so many British shows adapted for American screens, this version will surely be neutered (remember Coupling?) to avoid showing quite so much, well, skin, so it makes me wonder how this series will ultimately differ from other teen shows already on American TV. The idea of using young writers and unknown actors is encouraging, though. Are you a fan of the UK series? Could you see an American version working on MTV?

Are You Interested in Another Osbourne Project?

Yet another Osbourne-centered project is reportedly on the way, this time focused on daughter Kelly and her fiance, Luke Worrall. The MTV show will follow around the 24-year-old and her man, though it will apparently also "feature her heavy-metal legend dad Ozzy Osbourne, mum Sharon, and brother Jack." The series is set to begin airing in October, with filming starting this week "at the London home Kelly shares with Luke, 19, and cameras will follow her for the next three weeks as the couple plan their wedding later this year."

Should MTV Just Change Its Name Already?

On Tuesday, MTV execs announced that they are renewing some shows, like Teen Cribs and Is She Really Going Out With Him?, and picking up a bunch of new series as well, like "the Ashton Kutcher-produced American Idiots, the scripted comedy Hard Times and an untitled comedy/variety project starring Rob Hoffman."

Perhaps I'm dating myself here, but I recall when MTV, or "Music Television," was a network devoted to a lot of music-related things. Doing a word search for "music" in this article about MTV's next season brought up exactly one result, when the word is used to describe one of the reality show members as a "hip music executive."

Everyone knows MTV has lacked actual music for a long time now. Should the network just change the name already?

Beyonce, Lady Gaga Dominate the 2009 VMA Nominations

The video that launched a thousand YouTube copycat videos, Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" is, of course, all over the list of 2009 MTV Video Music Award nominations. Beyonce's got a bit of competition, however, in Lady Gaga, who ties her for the most nominations this year (they each earned nine nods). Beyonce said she is "excited and honored" to be tied with Lady Gaga, and that she's "spent so much time watching all the great versions [of 'Single Ladies'] people created all around the world. It's beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video."

As for the men, Kanye and Eminem have nominations aplenty, though it looks like Coldplay's video for "Viva La Vida" and Green Day's "21 Guns" will also be recognized.
