Check It: Season Five Preview For Lost

Here we go: a preview for the next season of Lost, which starts up in February 2009. The first part of the preview is a montage of certain plot points we've learned in the past, setting us up for some new footage we can look forward to in season five. After the fourth season with all the Oceanic Six stuff, the next season appears to deal with those six going back to the island:

Jack: "Everyone we left behind, they'd die too if I didn't come back."
Ben: "Well, thank God for second chances."

Peek Into the 5th Season of Lost, Thanks to Ajira Airways

Note: I was the representative Lost fan at the show's panel in LA at TCA. Here's a bit of what to look forward to at the beginning of this season.

The fifth season of Lost kicks off tonight with the first two episodes and while we were down at the TCAs in LA last week, we got to see the third one as well. The first two are good, don't get me wrong, but episode three had the whole room gasping. Full sections of my notes look a bit like, "OMG, this hurts my mind grapes." Needless to say, Lost fans should be super excited. All the promo photos emphasize the dual nature of this season - some will be in the outside world, as evidenced by the cityscape, and some will be back on the island.

While the cast of the show is still filming on location, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof were there to tenderly step around reporters' questions without revealing too much of what's to come. The lunch panel was brought to us by Ajira Airways, though the exec producers were careful not to enlighten us with its meaning. If you want to see a few tidbits from the panel as well as a little of what to expect from the first three episodes just read more.

While Cuse and Lindelof admitted that this season deals with an awful lot of time travel, they said that Sawyer is shirtless for the entire first episode as consolation to those who are not fans. In fact, they referred to this as the "Season of Sawyer." Um, yay.
Daniel Dae Kim does have a contract to appear in episodes this season. Emilie de Ravin does not, but will return at some point before the series finale.
Early on in the season, expect to see some sudden deaths. That's all on that.
There was a lot of talk about Richard Alpert's possible over-application of eye makeup. According to Cuse and Lindelof, they had the same initial reaction but he is not wearing any eye liner, mascara, or eye makeup. Ha.
Overall, the producers were incredibly thankful that ABC execs let them set an end date to the series so they will be able to tell their full story.
On risky plotlines Lindelof said, "I think we’ve become fairly masochistic in our writing. You say fraught with peril like it’s a bad thing…[we say,] let’s do it. That’s what keeps the show exciting. The show has been a time travel show for the past four years…as season five unfolds it will be apparent that time travel has been in the DNA of that show.
We are going to learn a lot about the history of the island, including about that four-toed statue.
Don't worry about the recession affecting Lost - Cuse and Lindelof assured everyone that while they may look closer at their spending, don't expect the show to tone down on the stunts.

It's just a few hours away at this point. Get ready for time travel, mind blowing moments and, well, sexy shirtless Sawyer. Lucky us, who is excited?

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

Lost in the shuffle? With American Idol expanded to two hours, Lost took a blow, pulling in just 9.8 million viewers - the lowest number ever for an original episode of the show.
Absolutely mental. The Mentalist is cementing its status as the season's breakout hit: Tuesday's episode pulled in 19.7 million viewers, its highest rated episode ever.
Big love for Big Love. HBO's recently renewed Big Love is making its mark on the ratings this season: Its most recent episode drew 1.9 million viewers, up significantly from this season's premiere.
Grammy moments. At a time when most award shows are losing ratings each year, the Grammys were actually up: The broadcast averaged 19.7 million viewers over its three and a half hours. That's about 2.5 million more people than last year's ceremony.
Crossing over. Private Practice got a huge boost from its crossover with Grey's Anatomy, jumping up to 14.2 million viewers.

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

Dancing to an all-time record. Maybe it was the economy, the Bachelor drama, or The Woz, but whatever the reason, Dancing with the Stars had its best-ever premiere on Monday, averaging 22.5 million viewers.
Daylight not-watching-TV time. Maybe everyone was out gallivanting in the sun - or going to bed early? A lot of Sunday shows took a hit after the clocks sprung forward, with The Celebrity Apprentice dropping to 7.6 million viewers and Desperate Housewives matching a series low with 13.5 million viewers.
Not so bad. One show broke the Daylight Savings Time curse: Breaking Bad got a big bump for its second season premiere on Sunday, bringing in 1.7 million viewers, more than 40 percent above its average viewership in its first season.
The subtle Clooney effect. Even a powerhouse like George Clooney couldn't raise ER to the number one position in its time slot on Thursday. The show generally garners 8 million viewers and saw a slight increase to 10.7 million, but it still lost to CBS' Eleventh Hour.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below, you can also add Zack Snyder's animated Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter to your queue.

Quantum of Solace
It seems like just yesterday we were puzzling over the title of the newest Bond flick and now here it is, out on DVD. The man with the killer looks and dreamy eyes, Daniel Craig, reprises his role as superspy James Bond, who is still pretty peeved at having been betrayed by Vesper Lynd, the woman he loved in the previous film. He wishes to take revenge on the company that blackmailed Vesper, though, and in his search he and M (Judi Dench) uncover plans of a shady leader of an environmentalist company to take control of Bolivia's water supply.

Bond also meets Camille (Olga Kurylenko), who has her own vengeful plan in mind. There's a lot of international locales included as well as Craig locking and loading guns throughout some intense action sequences - what more do you need?

Special features include the music video for "Another Way to Die," a featurette titled "Bond on Location," and commentary from director Marc Forster.

Bolt
Aw, Bolt. That little computer-animated dog is so cute. Also, how hilarious does that hamster in a ball look? Every time I see that guy in commercials, I laugh. I actually never caught this one in the theaters, so I'm excited to check it out on DVD.

Here's how Netflix describes the movie: "Featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, this animated adventure (nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar and Golden Globe) centers on a dashing German shepherd named Bolt, a canine actor forced into making an action-filled cross-country trek when he's accidentally shipped from Hollywood to New York. Believing that he and his fictional character are one and the same, Bolt gets a glimpse of what it takes to be a hero in the real world."

Special features include a new exclusive animated short film titled "Super Rhino," a special featurette called "In Session with John Travolta and Miley Cyrus," their music video for "I Thought I Lost You," and a behind-the-scenes look at the movie from conception to completion, which I hope includes some of the cool storyboards I got to see at Comic-Con.

In Treatment: Season One
When I first saw the schedule for HBO's In Treatment, I felt overwhelmed. The show was airing new episodes every night of the week for nine weeks! That's quite the commitment. It was pretty easy even for someone (like me) who was and is digging the show to fall behind, so yay DVD - and just in time for the second season premiere on April 5!

If you're new to the show, now's your chance to check it out. It follows a therapist named Paul, played by Gabriel Byrne, through a week of clients - one on Mondays, one on Tuesdays, and so on. Paul's own therapy session comes on Fridays. It's an inventive and unusual concept that won Byrne a Golden Globe this year. This DVD set is features-free, but you'll be busy enough just with all the episodes, right?

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

Not king of the ratings. - NBC's Kings didn't exactly rise to the throne of Sunday night TV. Its premiere episode brought in just 6 million viewers, making it the night's lowest-rated program that wasn't a) animated or b) on the CW.
Nobody's gossiping. Speaking of the CW, after a boost at the beginning of this season, Gossip Girl has dropped again, bringing in just 2.2 million viewers on Monday.
Photo finish. Dancing with the Stars and American Idol were both down in the ratings this week, and their performance shows ended up with nearly identical numbers: Dancing got 21.1 million viewers for its performance show on Monday, while Idol's performance show ended up with 21.5 million viewers on Tuesday.
Lost ground. This week's episode of Lost hit an all-time low for the series, clocking in with just 9.08 million viewers.
You're welcome, Will Ferrell. On Saturday, HBO's broadcast of Will Ferrell's You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush brought in 2.3 million viewers, the network's best ratings for a comedy special since a Chris Rock special in 2004.

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

Nice to meet you . . . and you, and you, and you. Showtime's United States of Tara had a better premiere than hits like Dexter, Weeds, or The Tudors, drawing 880,000 viewers on Sunday (or 1.5 million including online streaming and later airings).
Not Lost, no lie. Lost vs. Lie to Me is shaping up to be a new great Wednesday battle. Lie to Me nabbed 12.4 million viewers (slightly inflated because of an American Idol over-run), and Lost brought in 11.4 million viewers.
Cylon time. Battlestar Galactica got its standard ratings for its final season premiere on Friday, with 2.1 million viewers.
Lame gossip? Is there trouble ahead for Gossip Girl? Monday's episode got just 2.2 million viewers. Meanwhile, ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager almost doubled GG in the same time period, with 3.9 million viewers.
Housewarming. House had a strong debut in its new Monday time slot, with 14.9 million viewers.

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

Investigating success. Most shows have lost ratings steam this season, but not CSI. Its season premiere on Thursday drew a whopping 23 million viewers - actually up from last year's premiere.
Weak Wednesday. Things looked bad last week, but they've only gotten worse for ABC's Wednesday lineup. Pushing Daisies drew just 5.6 million viewers, followed by Private Practice with 7.3 million viewers and Dirty Sexy Money with 5.9 million viewers.
Graying Grey's? The week off for the VP debate clearly didn't help Grey's Anatomy, which clocked in well below average with just 14.5 million viewers.
The new class. Several of this week's premieres got off to promising (if not mind-blowing) starts: Eleventh Hour and Life On Mars tied in their time slot with 11.6 viewers apiece; Kath and Kim drew 7.5 million viewers, and Saturday Night Live's Thursday night election season show pulled in 10.6 million viewers.
Small victories. Privileged is far from a ratings winner, but at least it stopped its slide, inching up to 2.3 million viewers.
This week in politics. The second presidential debate topped the first, with 63.2 million viewers - but that's still well below what the vice-presidential candidates drew last week.
