TV Tonight: Eli Stone

Eli Stone, which premiered last Spring in the aftermath of the writers' strike and begins its second season on ABC tonight, is a warm, cozy blanket of a TV show. It doesn't get a lot of buzz - a fact it's trying to change with guest stars; more on that in a second - but it never fails to leave me with a smile on my face.

If you missed it the first time through or need a refresher, Jonny Lee Miller plays the title character, an attorney who begins having strange visions - either as the result of a brain aneurysm or because he's a modern-day prophet. The aneurysm was removed through a risky surgery at the end of the first season; what happens to the visions now remains to be, er, seen. The only certain thing is that there will be more singing and dancing, featuring supporting cast members like the wonderful Victor Garber.

Like a few other under-the-radar shows (Chuck comes to mind), Eli Stone has reeled in several high-profile guest stars for this new season, including Sigourney Weaver on tonight's premiere and Katie Holmes, whose appearance we've already gotten to glimpse, on next week's episode. Five Minutes With Loretta Devine

The fabulous Loretta Devine stopped by the TCA press tour earlier this week to talk about the upcoming second season of Eli Stone, in which she plays the title character's sassy but loving secretary. Between that and her recurring role on Grey's Anatomy, playing the sometimes-estranged wife of Seattle Grace's chief of surgery, Devine is showcasing her acting chops (and, in the case of Eli, her lovely voice) all over the ABC schedule - so I feel lucky that I managed to snag a few minutes with her in the hallway! Here's what she had to say:

Can you compare your experience working on Grey's Anatomy and Eli Stone, whether there are any similarities or huge differences between them?
They're both very extremely wonderful writers, and my relationships - it's so funny, because in Grey's Anatomy, I have a love relationship with my husband who doesn't spend enough time [with me], and in Eli Stone, I have this young man that I love so much and that I influence from the outside. I feel like the two characters are totally different from each other, so that's a good thing, because it's easy to keep them separate.

What's it like working with James Pickens Jr. on Grey's?
He is such a handsome man and such a debonair man. I learned about him cheating on me watching TV like everybody else, and I was like, "Oh my God! My husband's cheating!"

Even though you're not on the Grey's set all the time, do they keep you in the loop?
No, I'm not in the loop at all. They just call and say, "What's your availability?" and then they use you when they use you.

You said you didn't know about the singing on Eli Stone when you auditioned. When did you find out?
When I got the script! I was so excited because I got to sing some on Boston Public, so I'm really happy about that. And I really hope I get a chance to do more of it. You never know till you get the script. I'm not singing in the first two [episodes of the new season] and I'm sad!

The first season was all George Michael songs. Do you have a dream musical guest for the upcoming season?
I don't, to be totally honest, but Beyonce would be great to come on the show. I think she would be so beautiful. Jennifer Hudson, any of the Dreamgirls!

Glee-Ful Highlights From Episode "Original Song"

Glee tries a new spin on the usual formula this week with original songs. When the New Directions members attempt to come up with their own material for Regionals, the results are, in most cases, just plain silly (no offense, Puck). Even so, they're still fun for us to watch!

The various members of the club put pen to paper to express their feelings through song, but with one tune after another, there's very little time for storyline in the actual episode. Quinn is still trying to win back her popularity, Rachel gets misty over Finn, and Santana is ticked at Brittany following last week's big moment between the girls. Who's Your Favorite Emmy-Winning Female Character?

At the Emmys, women were nominated for playing a wide-range of characters, from goofy to sultry to serious. Not all of them could win, but a great group did take home trophies. Melissa McCarthy, who plays an overweight teacher who meets her boyfriend in a weight-loss support group on Mike & Molly, won her first Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. Melissa defeated a tough list of nominees, who joined her on stage during her win, including 30 Rock's Tina Fey and Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler. Julie Bowen won outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for playing Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, an overprotective mom who tries to do it all. Julie beat costar Sofia Vergara, Emmy host Jane Lynch for Glee, and all-star funny women Betty White, Kristen Wiig, and Jane Krakowski.

It wasn't all about the comedians tonight, though. Margo Martindale won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for playing the matriarch of the Bennett crime family in Justified. And Julianna Margulies won big, taking home the prize for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for The Good Wife. Guest actresses also got some love. Gwyneth Paltrow won for playing caliente substitute Spanish teacher Holly Holliday on Glee, while Loretta Devine took home outstanding guest actress in a drama series for Grey's Anatomy. Announcing the 2011 Primetime Emmy Award Winners!

The Emmy Awards have wrapped and this year there were a few repeat winners, as well as some surprises. Mad Men took home the Emmy for best drama for the fourth consecutive year, while Modern Family picked up its second win for best comedy series. The ABC comedy dominated a lot of the evening's other categories, with Julie Bowen and Ty Burell taking home taking home matching Emmys for for best supporting actress and actor. Kyle Chandler was a pleasant surprise winner of the evening, himself admitting he did not expect to win during his acceptance speech for best actor in a drama for his role in Friday Night Lights.

Host Jane Lynch opened the show with a funny musical opener, but it was the Lonely Island boys and a slew of comedians that helped provide the funnier moments of the evening with spoofs and performances. The nominees for the best actress also garnered a lot of laughs, taking to the stage as soon as their names were announced and literally crowning winner Melissa McCarthy. In this earnest high school comedy, Aimee Teegarden stars as an overachieving straight-A student, Nova, who heads the prom committee. When an unfortunate accident ruins the decor she's been working on for the dance, the principal assigns rebellious student Jesse (Thomas McDonell) to help her rebuild the props. The movie also focuses on some of their fellow students as the class prepares for their big night. While you may know what to expect from the story, the film offers a cute look at teenage romance. DVD extras include a blooper reel and seven music videos.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family

Tyler Perry returns as titular character Madea in this dramedy about a family facing a number of problems. The sassy matriarch rallies around her niece (Loretta Devine) as she experiences a health scare, and offers her support to other members of the family as they navigate issues ranging from a failing marriage to the temptation to deal drugs. Madea's antics may feel familiar to audiences who have seen films in the franchise before, but fans of the raucous humor won't be disappointed. DVD extras include four featurettes, including "Madea's Family Tree" and "By-Reen: The Baby Mama From Hell."

Announcing the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominees!

TV stars Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy were up and at 'em this morning to present the nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards - one of which went to McCarthy herself for her work on Mike and Molly. There aren't too many shockers on this year's list; new shows Game of Thrones, The Killing, and Boardwalk Empire all got some love, Modern Family continues to dominate (now with a nomination for Ed O'Neill), and Friday Night Lights finally got that much-deserved nod for outstanding drama series. There are also some big names you may not have expected to see on this list, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Justin Timberlake all picked up nominations for guest appearances.
