Ryan Gosling to Headline Logan's Run Remake

Ryan Gosling typically takes his time between projects, but the actor is piling on the gigs these days. Earlier this week we learned that he'll be reteaming with his Blue Valentine director for a movie, and apparently he's also close to signing on for a remake of Logan's Run.

The original 1976 film focuses on a man who tries to cheat death upon his 30th birthday in a postapocalyptic world where all people are forced to enter a permanent sleep when they reach their 30th year. The film could clearly benefit from a facelift with new technology, and I'd support pretty much anything Ryan Gosling does, but come on: how many remakes does Hollywood really need?

Earth Day Movie Night: Environmental Disaster Movies

As I was researching environmental disaster movies it was interesting to see how long this idea has been around that humans could destroy the earth simply by taking its resources for granted. Long before Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, filmmakers and fiction writers were clearly aware that manmade pollution has a chance of bringing about an apocalyptic scenario here on earth. So, in honor of Earth Day I present a few movies that, in their own over-the-top ways urge audiences to heed the warnings of the day lest we succumb to a future worse than what these films imagined.

The Day After Tomorrow
This is probably the first cautionary global warming tale that springs to most people's minds when you think "environmental disaster." In The Day After Tomorrow the rising temperature of the planet speeds up the disaster effects some real-life scientists predict will happen eventually. The film stars Daniel Quaid as a sexy - wait for it - paleoclimatologist who tries to save his son (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the other survivors stuck in New York after the city is flooded and then frozen over by the rising ocean. The movie is all CGI effects and silly one-liners but the action is heart-pounding and Quaid and Gyllenhaal are easy on the eyes.

read more. Logan's Run Before Star Wars wowed audiences with stellar effects, there was the campy and slightly corny Logan's Run. The film is based on the bestselling science fiction novel of the same name that was written in 1967. The movie takes place in the future (23rd century to be exact) where the earth has basically been destroyed by overpopulation and pollution. A few survivors live in a domed society which would be rather lovely if it weren't for the fact that everyone must die at age 30 (population control). The movie stars Michael York (a.k.a. Basil from Austin Powers) and actually won an Academy Award for visual effects at the time. It's a bit dated, but is still an interesting look at a scary dystopian future.
Soylent Green Similar to Logan's Run, Soylent Green was released in the '70s, but this time takes us to the year 2022. Now that overpopulation and global warming have led to a world where food like fruits, vegetables, and meats are rare, most of the population lives off "soylent green" processed food. Charlton Heston stars in this classic thriller about the potential for corruption when resources are scarce and humankind is desperate.

Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn Says Ryan Gosling "Is the Only Guy Who Can Wear a Satin Jacket"

Nicolas Winding Refn directed this Fall's critical hit Drive, starring Ryan Gosling as a stunt driver who gets involved in a messy situation trying to protect his neighbor and crush, played by Carey Mulligan. The film has had audiences buzzing over Gosling's performance, the movie's soundtrack, and the brutal but creative violence. I had a chance to talk to Refn this week about the film, and the director talked up his "hero" Gosling and their fruitful creative relationship (Refn and Gosling have two other films in development: Only God Forgives, currently in production, and the remake of Logan's Run). Check out the interview for Refn's thoughts about Gosling, and other elements of Drive, like the music, the casting of Mulligan, and the driver's unique wardrobe.

BuzzSugar: How did you feel about Ryan's performance in Drive?
Nicolas Winding Refn: I think that he's one of those rare actors that has this gift that very few movie stars have ever had, which is that he can say a thousand words without saying a line. He has this talent that's so unique that only maybe Alain Delon and James Stewart had. You can shoot him from all angles; you can almost place him behind a door and you still sense his presence, and his vulnerability and his strength, and so forth. He's the kind of guy who makes acting look really easy.

Buzz: How did you choose the distinctive jacket for Driver to wear?
NWR: I always wanted him to wear a satin jacket, that would illuminate him at night like a knight. It would illuminate his aura. And Ryan Gosling is the only guy who can wear a satin jacket. And then we came up with this scorpion on his back, because it would give him a symbol.

Ice Cream Inspires Minx Manicures at Fashion Week

Ice cream and manicures might not seem like a natural pairing, but they were just that at yesterday's Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference in New York. Dozens of style bloggers (including yours truly) were treated to manicures inspired by the brown and black colors of Magnum ice cream. Nail guru Lisa Logan, who's decorated the digits of stars like Beyoncé and Eve, had nearly run through her supply of patterned Minx. Why was the crowd melting for the look, we wondered? "People like something different and fun for Fashion Week," she said of her fish-scale design customized with Magnum's colors. "And let's face it, people like ice cream, too." Can't argue with that.

Ryan Gosling to Cowboy Up as The Lone Ranger

Here's some casting news I didn't see coming: Ryan Gosling is in talks to play The Lone Ranger. If his schedule permits, Gosling will star as the masked lawman in the big-screen version of the 1950 TV show, which will be directed by Gore Verbinski. Fans of the original series know that the ranger wasn't truly lone, however; Johnny Depp has been on board to play sidekick Tonto for some time. Gosling and Depp as an onscreen team? I'm not sure the screen can handle that much handsome.

Though Disney's The Lone Ranger won't be released until 2014, you'll be able to see the actor in another reboot before then - Gosling recently signed on to star in the remake of Logan's Run.

Carey Mulligan Experiences Her First Comic-Con to Talk About Drive and Her Dreamy Costar Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling couldn't be at Comic-Con to talk about his upcoming thriller Drive, but his beautiful costar, Carey Mulligan, was on hand to discuss both him and what it was like to play his love interest. Another costar, Ron Perlman, and director Nicolas Winding Refn were also there to talk about the car-centric action movie. Despite Gosling's absence, we still got to see some of the actor via some footage of the film that showed it to be intense, sexy, and pretty gory. Check out some of the choice details from the panel.

Mulligan was asked about her part in the movie, and she declared that her job was to "fall in love with Ryan Gosling . . . rough." Gushing about what a nice guy he is, she said that he showed up to the set after having studied everything about cars and was the hit of the production. She said "everyone fell in love with him." It's hard to believe, I know.
The footage we saw provided the tone for the film: dark but seductive. Gosling's character discovers a hit has been placed on him, and in the scene we saw, he goes head to head with a man in an elevator, but before the fight, he lays one of the sexiest kisses I've ever seen on film on Mulligan.
Danish director Refn gave the credit to Gosling for making Drive happen. "This film got made because Ryan wanted to make it." Refn, who has another project with Gosling lined up after this (the remake of Logan's Run), shared a hilarious anecdote about his first meeting with Gosling, in which they came up with the idea for the movie. Refn had a fever and took powerful cold medicine, which he blamed for the fact that he and Gosling had "no connection" when they met because he was so out of it. After he asked Gosling to take him home halfway through dinner, REO Speedwagon's "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" came on, and Refn started to cry, then sing the song. He said that he screamed at Gosling: "I got it! I know what Drive is," and came up with the concept - it's about "a man who drives around at night listening to pop music and that's his relief." Gosling's response? "We're doing it."

The Three Musketeers Trailer: Explosions, Sword Fighting, and Orlando Bloom's Mustache

Between the fiery explosions and slow-motion fight scenes, it's obvious that director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) is trying to give his new version of The Three Musketeers a modern action film feel. Oh, and it's in 3D, naturally.

Logan Lerman stars as D'Artagnan from the classic story, a young man who teams up with the Musketeers (Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans, and Ray Stevenson) to save France and prevent Europe from going to war. The supporting cast includes familiar faces like Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom in an impressive mustache and pompadour, and up-and-comer Juno Temple. While the trailer looks relatively exciting, I do feel like the special effects have turned this into a run-of-the-mill action flick, whereas I'm more interested in the actual story. The film hits theaters on Oct. 14, but let me know if you're digging the preview after the jump.

Istanbul, Turkey

No longer the undiscovered gem that it was just a few years ago, Istanbul is still under the radar for many American travelers. That’s why it is possible to experience this amazing city and its legendary hospitality for a fraction of what you’d pay in London, Paris, Rome, or any of the other more traditional European destinations.
