Movie Preview: Kabluey

The quirky indie film Kabluey was completely not on my radar until I happened across the trailer a few days ago. I completely fell in love with the odd and incredibly endearing preview, so I decided to research a little further. Turns out, it's being warmly received by reviewers (well, those who are in cities where it's actually being played, of course).

Lisa Kudrow plays a struggling mother of two whose husband is fighting in Iraq. Her brother-in-law, Salman (Scott Prendergast), soon joins the household to help her out, and ultimately takes "a humiliating job as a giant blue corporate mascot in order to help make ends meet and hold the family together."

Most of the humor seems to come from watching this big, plush-looking, cartoony blue figure juxtaposed with regular humans. It seems dark and funny, with some sadness around the edges. Plus, the rest of the cast includes Christine Taylor, Chris Parnell and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (and if I may channel my grandmother for a moment: hubba hubba!).

Buzz In: Has TV Inspired You to Take Up a Hobby - or Career?

At first, I really wasn't sure what to make of this news that Lisa Kudrow and NBC are teaming up for a show tracing the family histories of celebrities. So, since the show (called Who Do You Think You Are) is based on a BBC series, I turned to my gal PopUK to get her take. And, not only did she have mostly great things to say about the show, but she also mentioned that it created a big buzz about genealogy in the UK: It's even spawned a magazine about family histories!

I'm not sure if I can imagine US television viewers rushing out to research their great-great-great-uncles after watching a B-list celebrity's family tree get traced - but maybe I'm wrong. After all, it's not like I've never been inspired to take up a new hobby (or even consider a career) because of television. I thought about law school because of Ally McBeal, enrolled in dance classes for the first time in years thanks to So You Think You Can Dance, and became a more crotchety person courtesy of House. OK, just kidding about that last one.

Seriously, though. Did any of you turn to medical professions because of ER or Grey's? Start sewing thanks to Project Runway? Buy a lie detector for a little at-home Moment of Truth action?

Movie Preview: Gerard Butler, Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You

Back when this movie was a part of my tearjerker movies Fall Movie Preview post, there was no trailer available, but I was looking forward to seeing what the tone of this movie would be. Now, judging from the newly released trailer, it looks a little sappy, but also cute and endearing - if you're in that kind of mood. Plus, I recently learned that Swank injured herself during a scene in which Gerard Butler is stripping, and somehow that makes me like the movie more.

Opening December 21, the movie is based on a novel and stars Hilary Swank as Holly, a young widow who discovers that her husband wrote out messages for her just before he died. Some of the notes include unusual requests, and before long, Holly and her girlfriends (played by Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon, pictured) are going on a string of adventures that Holly's late husband planned for her.

I think the best parts of the trailer feature Lisa Kudrow's character's ill-fated attempts to pick up men (well, those moments and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's extremely adorable smile are my favorite parts), but you can see what you think of the trailer yourself if you read more
