Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode Six, "Ugly Berry"

Last week, Betty let her good and decent self help out an old enemy in need by showing her the ropes at Mode. In doing so, she made a monster out of Kimmie, who nabbed a promotion and declared ominously that she felt like her old self again.

So when Ugly Betty opens this week, Kimmie is empowered and all the rage in the office. She rubs Betty's nose in her success, which makes Betty morph into a green-eyed monster ("She brings out this side of me where I want to scratch her eyes out"). Betty's biggest complaint to Daniel is that Kimmie refuses to play by the rules - but she soon learns that working with people you dislike is par for the course in grown-up world. That, though, is a world in which Marc and Amanda do not live, and they decide Kimmie must go, which means luring Betty over to the dark side and joining forces against a common enemy. Hilda's opening sass with Betty chatting about Kimmie was fabulous: "I always knew she was the same old rhymes-with-ba-zich."
I know there have been rumors swirling about Lohan's time at Ugly Betty, and I don't mean to pile on, but did you think her evil girl acting job was good? She has a big meltdown scene in the end where she's supposed to totally lose it and . . . well? Not very persuasively unstable, in my opinion - but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Kimmie kicks Betty where she knows it hurts: right in Betty's ambitious spot. ("In just two weeks I’ve gotten higher than you have in two years.")
Don't get me wrong, I like Wilhelmina evil, but I'm finding her co-editorship with Daniel fun. It's nice having her biting humor around in general, like in the scene where Claire is briefing them both on the accounting and telling them to take this seriously: "Dear Claire, setting us straight like a poor man’s Sally Field."
So, yay! We spend a good chunk of time with Jesse the hot neighbor this week, and he even sings Betty a song, "Go for it, Betty!"
Oh and it's cute that he's already taken to calling her "Super B."

So Betty comes up with the hot fruit idea, which lands an elusive supermodel for the cover, which bumps Kimmie's big story. That's "game on," as far as Kimmie is concerned.
Watching Betty (somewhat literally) melting down on-camera broke my heart, and the way Kimmie slides in is just lame. I feel like they could have thought of something slightly more underhanded for Kimmie to do besides make Betty sweaty.
Hilda dressing up Justin to make some money on election day is hilarious. He looks so miserable.
And guess who shows up for a haircut in Hilda's salon? The karate kid! Well, OK, it was Ralph Macchio, guest-starring as a councilman who who scolds Hilda on her business papers or something. She was so furious! Which means they're totally going to fall in love, right?
Best part of the night? Amanda and Marc focusing on getting Kimmie fired, of course. I love when Amanda tries to convince Betty she's awful: "Betty, she threatened your family!" (She didn't).
So this Conor Owens fella looks a lot like Daniel Craig to me, which is good. And turns out he's in cahoots with Daniel. Good to see Daniel's learning to get ahead of the Wilhelmina-psycho-plot curve.

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode Five, "Granny Pants"

Well, it happened. The original mean girl in Betty's life, Kimmie Keegan (Lindsey Lohan), infiltrates Mode this week, throwing all kinds of office dynamics off-kilter on Ugly Betty.

The last time we saw Kimmie, she was slinging burgers and telling Betty about how awful her life is. When she shows up at Betty's office looking for a job and gets one, she soon discovers life in the fast lane is hard and she's pretty much a disaster. Betty has a choice to make: She can exact revenge on a girl that made her youth a living hell or rise above the past and help out a new friend in need. Which route does Betty choose? Well, she's a highly predictable goody-goody with a big heart, so . . . we can talk about it if you read more.

The opening sequence is pretty amazing, especially when Wilhelmina shows up channeling Cruella de Vil wearing a dalmatian jacket with a bunch of puppies trailing her.
Daniel and Wilhelmina are off to a bumpy start as coeditors of Mode. Daniel: "Wilhelmina Slater does not support the troops!"
Amanda is hilarious as usual, and her Betty-taunting early in the episode made me laugh: "I’m bored. This is a perfectly hideous outfit you’re wearing, but I’ve already mocked it."
And then Kimmie arrives, telling Betty that her life "has been a downward slide into sucks since high school." Betty tries to get rid of her, but Daniel basically hires her on the spot.
Then we see the flashback. First of all, Betty's high-school teeth were really big. Secondly, everyone in junior high called her Pig Latin! That is brutal. And third of all, Kimmie rises to popularity in high school by pulling down Betty's skirt in front of the whole cafeteria. After that everyone called Betty "granny pants." So sad!
Kimmie really sucks at Betty's job. I loved when she talks to Willi for the first time and Marc is summoned to get in her face and make that hissing cat noise!
But when everyone is ready to fire Kimmie, the train wreck, Betty stands up for her! I was pulling my hair out here, because I just knew this was Betty being naive. However, the Kimmie training montage is amazing.
Meanwhile, Justin has a bully of his own at school and is going to audition for Billy Elliot on Broadway. When Hilda has her super-angry reaction to Justin's bully news, I wanted someone to hand her an Emmy. It's small and subtle, but she's so amazing and sassy!

And OMG do things get hilarious when Marc and Amanda notice Kimmie. At first they're mean to her - "Cute tiny backpack. Do you put all your tiny scrunchies in it?"
Betty training Kimmie re: Wilhelmina: "If you screw up with her, you could be fired or die - I've heard rumors."
The lesson on how to pronounce Will-HELL-mina was great, too. ("There's an easy way to remember this. There's hell in it.")
Daniel misses D.J. and wants a family now ("My clock is ticking") and signs up for a dating service. And his former-model surprise date turns out to be . . . Willi! Raise your hand if you thought it might possibly be Renee. I sort of did.
Betty out all night clubbing is a pretty funny visual, and then she oversleeps and suspects Kimmie of foul play ("I should have known something was up when she ordered me that second Long Island iced tea. By the way - not tea!”)
And then Betty goes totally nuts! And pulls down Kimmie's pants! And Marc and Amanda nickname her "sexy pants," and everyone now thinks Betty is ugly and mean.

So where do we think Betty went wrong with Kimmie? I think she probably should have let her get fired. It would just be really weird to have a former high-school classmate, who made your life miserable, working with you, right? And now Kimmie's back to being terrible so I'm not sure what life lesson Betty is supposed to learn here, other than "Always look out for number one!" or "It's not your job to help people who have been mean to you get their lives together!" or something. What do you guys think?

TV Tonight: Lindsay Lohan Infiltrates Mode

After Katie Holmes on Eli Stone and Nicole Richie on Chuck, tonight concludes our TV cameo trifecta when Lindsay Lohan returns to Ugly Betty.

We've seen plenty of Lohan's character, Kimmie, up till now, both as the burger boss and in flashbacks as Betty's high-school nemesis. But she's never ventured into Betty's professional world . . . until now. In this episode, Kimmie turns up in the Mode office, asking for Betty's help as she tries to move on from her deep-frying duties. From the looks of things, though, Kimmie isn't exactly destined for success as an executive assistant - though the clip of her having an espresso machine disaster, jamming paper in the printer, and trying (and failing) to pronounce "Wilhelmina" is pretty great.

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode Four, "Betty Suarez Land"

OK, I am such a sucker for Ugly Betty, and I totally cried at the end of this week's episode. I blame a couple of things: First of all, anything related to bad things happening to Hilda breaks my heart, and of course a Suarez family hug will get the tears flowing. And Claire Meade protecting her children and Daniel and Alexis having a "moment" on a tarmac is exactly the kind of thing to finish me off.

I enjoyed the episode, and even though there wasn't as much Marc and Amanda as last week, we get the return of Gio! And he is extremely angry. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.

Claire urges Daniel to visit Alexis in the slammer, and Betty's glad they're able to get along, "even if she did, you know, push my best friend down the stairs."
Alexis tells Daniel she's the actual father of D.J., at which point Daniel lunges across the table and tackles her. Rebecca Romijn is such a good sport, and it's hilarious to see her wrestle with the guys.
The way she starts the story about being D.J.'s father is funny, too: "Thirteen year ago, I was a man, obviously . . ."
Gio returns, but when Betty asks him about Rome, he's so mad at her! ("I hate you. You're not a nice person. Not only are you banned from Gio's Deli, you're banned from my life.")
Even furious, he's so cute with his passion for sandwiches. I love how he went to Italy to find his flavor!

The running gag of the night is about how Daniel is a wimpy fighter. Betty, after learning about his run-in with Alexis: "We've talked about that. You suck at fighting."
Ew! In that same scene, Daniel refuses to tell Betty all the details about the fight, and she points out that it's a funny time to have "boundaries" considering she was just looking for a mole on his back. Um, I would not search for moles without a promotion and a raise.
So Wilhelmina convinces the district attorney to charge Alexis with attempted murder. How? Through kinky sex, of course.
By the way, how'd you like Willi's awesome '80s outfit? You know, the black one with the foil green and purple flowers and the belt. Only Vanessa Williams could wear that and look hot.
Betty, of course, cannot leave well enough alone and has to make Gio her friend again even though she turned him down romantically. So she goes about finding his this really special cheese, which led to my favorite line of the night from Amanda: "A pair of smelly, sweaty balls arrived for you."
Gio's address for Betty is hilarious: 25 Teddy Bear Lane, Betty Suarez Land.
Betty's name for Gio's ride is pretty funny, too: "Meaty, cheesy van!"
Did anyone catch who played D.J.'s grandfather? Why, it was famed French chef Jacques Pépin! I only know that because of my mom.

I'm really glad Gio and Betty worked things out in the end ("You're gonna do great things, Suarez - I don't blame you for choosing yourself") but they're so darn cute together that I'm sad to see it end. Also, that neighbor musician of Betty's is waiting in the wings, and I'm just not ready for Betty to date again. Daniel saying goodbye to his son was sad, Hilda breaking up with coach was sad (but right), and Alexis leaving the show for a bit was sad. So, overall: Sad! What did you all think?

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode One, "The Manhattan Project"

The return of Ugly Betty was one of the few season premieres last night that didn't have any extra time tacked on. But I was totally fine with that, because the Betty folks managed to deliver a fun first episode of their new season even without bonus minutes. The last time we saw Betty, she had a big choice to make: forever with Henry or a romantic trip abroad with Gio. I think the choice revealed last night was somewhat predictable, but it still had a pretty hilarious twist. We'll chat about that in a sec.

Meanwhile, a lot has changed now that Wilhelmina is back in charge, including a darker, more sinister-feeling Mode headquarters, complete with the temperature turned to freezing - the perfect lair for an evil ice queen. And where has Daniel been banished to in the Meade kingdom? I won't say until after the jump, but it was one of my favorite twists of the night. There's also a new hot guy on the scene! Betty opens the episode by saying, "I had a choice to make between two guys. And I was torn." She decides that she's not ready for marriage to Henry, and she also doesn't like Gio in that way and doesn't want to lead him on. So she chose a hilarious trip around the USA to the tune of The B-52s song "Roam." I loved the postcards of Betty's adventures - so fun!
So much laughter at "Peg and the girls!" and Justin's dismay at how unfeminine Peg and Betty's travel buddies were.
I have a love-hate relationship with Betty's earnestness. It's so endearing at times and other times, like when she introduces the "idea binder," I just smack my forehead and cringe. Ignacio sounded harsh, but I think he has it right when he calls her naive.
Lindsay Lohan is back as the mean girl who's grown up to run the local burger joint. And she's Ignacio's boss! She looks good in the uniform, I have to say.
When Betty returns to Mode, Amanda and Marc are of course priceless with their reactions: "Oh Betty! I forgot how big and bright you are!" So mean but so funny.
I loved when Betty asks why they're being so nice to her and they respond that she reminds them of the good old days.
That scary Rosemary's Baby nursery setup in Daniel's office gave me the creeps.

OMG, Player Magazine might have been my favorite part of last night. The show's portrayal of a men's magazine is awesome - especially Daniel's facial hair and the boo-ing whenever Betty enters the room.
The best Player Magazine part is when they discuss Betty's idea about a piece on powerful women and a staff member says, "See, we don't like disease (boo!) or old women (boo!)," to which Betty responds, "They're 40," to which the entire room then responds, "Boooooooooo!"
Regis and Kelly make an appearance and have a funny conversation about Hot Flash. Regis calls it a magazine about "lady business."
How'd you like all of Betty's new-age stuff, like power animals? Ha!
Poor Hilda. Why can't she catch a break with the guys? He's sooooo married! It sucks. You know they say they'll leave their wives but it never happens.
Second best moment of the night behind Player Magazine for me was the food fight with Lohan's character. Betty: "You . . . mean, mean person!"
While there was no Henry or Gio in site, Betty has a new man in her life (kinda), her hot musician neighbor Jesse! What do you think so far? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
Oh and finally - Rebecca Romijn looks super-pregnant. It was kind of fun to watch her play "hide the bump" all night.

I love the way this new season is set up: Betty in the city with her very own apartment, evil ruling at Mode, Betty's new friends at Player, Daniel the dad. I don't have too many complaints and think there's loads for the Betty folks to work with this season. Could you tell they were shooting in New York? Do you want to see more of Lohan?
