Inspired: Autumnal Tones From Life on Mars

I've recently gotten hooked on the bizarre detective/sci-fi hybrid show Life on Mars. The show follows NYPD Detective Sam Tyler's trials and travails when he's transported back to 1973 after being hit by a car in present-day New York. Yeah, I know it sounds odd, but it's pretty compelling prime-time television.

I'm also taken with the show's '70s interiors. Detective Tyler's apartment is particularly groovy, but I was also drawn to the very seasonally appropriate interior shown in this photo. I love the russets, avocados, burnt umbers, and rust colors shown here. (And didn't everyone's parents or grandparents have that Corelle set?)

I thought it would be fun and Fall-like to maintain the color palette, but update the look. Oh, and to keep it beautiful on a budget, I used a lot of sale items!

First Look: Life on Mars

So far, we haven't seen too much of ABCs remake of Life on Mars. The show, which will begin airing after Grey's Anatomy on Oct. 9, had a pretty tricky road to TV, with nearly every actor being recast except for leading man Jason O'Mara. The cast now includes Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, and Harvey Keitel, who are finally starting to show up in promos and clips.

The show, based on a British series, finds O'Mara's character - a New York City cop named Sam Tyler- mysteriously transported back to the 1970s. Keitel plays an older detective, Gene Hunt, who doesn't always follow protocol, while Imperioli plays another officer and Mol plays a woman trying to prove she deserves a shot at police work.

One clip of Sam and Gene meeting in a bar surfaced recently, and now there's a brief ABC promo showing shots of Imperioli and Mol as well. Still no pilot, but I'm hoping that will appear before too long. I enjoyed the British version of the show, but all the trouble this adaptation has run into has left me feeling wary. ABC's Fall Schedule: My Take (With Video!)

I just finished watching ABC's upfront presentation to advertisers, where the network's executives went over the schedule that was announced this morning and showed clips of the new shows - including Life on Mars, pictured above. The presentation gave me some insight into what ABC's thinking with its schedule, which only includes two new shows for the Fall:

Basically, Fall 2007 was so nice, ABC wants to do it twice. "By far, we had the best Fall in decades," entertainment president Stephen McPherson said, "and then came the lovely strike." So the network is mostly doing it over, bringing back the majority of the new shows from last year.
That doesn't mean ABC isn't actively developing shows for later in the year: They've picked up 20 pilots, split pretty evenly between comedy and drama.
McPherson promoted a few of those shows in his presentation, including Four Play, the new comedy from Will and Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. If the show is as funny as those two were just talking about it, we'll be in for a treat.
Also funny: clips from ABC's remake of the Web series In the Motherhood. It reminded me a bit of Bravo's Significant Others if all the characters were moms battling bratty children.
On the downside, the presentation ended with clips from Wipeout, the game show with people falling and running into things. The voiceover dared me not to laugh. I didn't laugh.

Opportunity Knocks This traveling game show seems family-friendly almost to a fault. It definitely reminded me of the Saturday morning game shows of my childhood. I see it as more a companion to America's Funniest Home Videos, though, not necessarily anchoring Tuesday night. The Goode Family This animated series about a family of vegan, politically correct, recycle-happy folks from King of the Hill's Mike Judge could either be hilarious or unbearable. From the clip, I was actually leaning toward unbearable. What's your take?
