Unknown: A Web of Mystery to Get Lost In

Unknown feels a bit reminiscent of The Bourne Identity. Man with identity issues? Check. Shadowy figures in pursuit on European streets? Check. And somehow, inexplicably, said man is very, very good at hand-to-hand combat? Check again. But even though it's engaging, Unknown doesn't quite measure up to The Bourne Identity.

Liam Neeson stars as Dr. Martin Harris, a scientist who flies to Germany with his wife Liz (January Jones) for a prestigious conference with other men in his field. After arriving at their hotel, Martin realizes that he left his passport at the airport, so he hops in a taxi to retrieve it. En route, the taxi's driver Gina (Diane Kruger) gets in an accident and flies off a bridge. Nearly killed, Martin sits in a coma at a hospital, only to awaken days later to find his wife with a man who has stolen his identity. With no form of ID on him and a spotty memory, Martin tracks down Gina to help him recall details about the day of the crash, so he can make sense of the situation. But as soon as Martin sniffs around, strange men begin to trail him, and thus begins the cat-and-mouse game.

read more. Martin's paranoia is what drives Unknown. As he runs for his life, everyone becomes suspect, from a man talking on a cell phone to an old lady crossing the street. Who is after him, and why? And is Martin perhaps wrong about who he is after all? As the film continues, the answers become even more muddled until the audience feels just as confused as Martin himself. It creates a sense of suspense that had me on edge, waiting for resolution. Neeson is a likeable action star, and Diane Kruger also delivers a solid performance as Gina. Though Gina is a secondary character, the glimpses of her home life as a struggling Russian immigrant made me just as invested in her story as Martin's. When the film hints at a relationship between the two characters, it's easy to root for them to get together, especially since Martin's wife Liz is obviously bad news. The film doesn't demand much from January Jones; for the most part she's just expected to look stately and wear gorgeous clothes like one of Hitchcock's blond heroines. It's clear from the beginning that Liz isn't to be trusted. She's a femme fatale type, but as we look to Jones's facial expressions for clues about Liz, it's hard to get a read. It's not so much a nuanced performance as bad acting. When the truth finally comes out about Liz, Martin, and the chaotic run of events, it's not as clever as I had hoped. The story's twist is unexpected, but mainly because it seems just so far out of left field. Despite that, the film is still a perfect popcorn flick. With several surprises and heart-thumping moments, it's an adrenaline-filled couple of hours that's worth the price of admission. Just leave your sense of logic at the door.

Liam Neeson was the man in the middle of a January Jones and Diane Kruger sandwich last night at the LA premiere of Unknown. January's latest edgy look was an Alexander McQueen creation, while Diane chose Dolce & Gabbana. Diane had Joshua Jackson by her side after she took a quick trip to NYC this week to chat up her movie on Regis and Kelly. Josh welcomed her home with flowers, and they were one of the many adorable couples spending the holiday together. Diane told us that it was the first time in three years they've been together on Feb. 14 and that Josh pulled out all the stops for a sweet celebration. January, meanwhile, shared all about shooting in Berlin with Diane and Liam, saying that they were able to spend lots of time together on set and off. Liam had nothing but good things to say about working with the ladies, adding that he particularly loved the script because it was a thriller with a brain. The Next Three Days: An Escape Plan Gone Too Far

In The Next Three Days, Russell Crowe's character, a professor at a local community college, discusses the use of logic in Don Quixote with his students. Is lack of logic actually better than logic itself? The film sure thinks so, as it weaves together an intricate plot that sinks deeper and deeper into the absurd as it drags on. There's entertainment value along the way, but the more implausible the story gets, the more it loses its audience.

Based on a French thriller, the film follows John Brennan (Crowe), the perfect husband to his wife Lara (Elizabeth Banks), and father to their little boy. John and Lara are the ideal couple, so in love with each other that they still find time to sneak in sex in the car after dinner dates. Then one morning, the police rush into their house to arrest Lara for murder, and their happy life comes crashing down. For more on the film,

read more. Lara has been charged for the murder of her boss after the two women had had a public scuffle at the office. When the boss lady turns up dead in the employee parking lot (and Lara is seen driving away), things appear fairly incriminating. But despite the evidence, John refuses to believe that his wife is guilty. He tries to get her out of jail the legal way, and when that doesn't work, he plots her escape with a few tips from an ex-convict (Liam Neeson). When the story first begins, John doesn't even know how to load a gun. But as his plotting gets more elaborate, he's nearly driven insane by the dream of his wife's freedom. He abandons rational thought to do whatever it takes, even if it means having blood on his hands. Yes, people will go to great lengths for love, but when the audience isn't even sure of Lara's innocence, it doesn't make John look noble - it makes him look crazy. Crowe and Banks both give it their all here, bringing more genuine emotion to the story than it perhaps deserves. The film does have a nice helping of suspense (no doubt thanks to director Paul Haggis), and like John, you're bound to get a little caught up in the madness of the escape. But be warned: you'll have to abandon your sense of logic at the door. John pulls off his scheme with such a degree of expertise that you'll wonder when the ordinary suburban husband started resembling Jason Bourne. What's worse, John's questionable tactics make it harder to root for him. As he and Lara inch closer to their happily ever after on the lam, I wasn't cheering them on anymore. Rather, I was questioning if I still cared.

Emma Watson picked a sexy black Calvin Klein dress and strappy heels to join Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint at the NYC premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I yesterday. She accessorized with a gold hair clip to match her shimmery eye makeup. Emma, Daniel, and Rupert all fielded questions about saying goodbye to the series as well as the much-talked about Emma and Daniel makeout session in the movie. The trio and their highly anticipated film came across the ocean after their London screening last week, and this time a few other big names joined Hogwart's most famous students. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick brought James Wilkie to check out the film while Keri Russell was rolling solo. Madonna's daughter Lourdes got to take some friends along while Glee's newest star, Darren Criss, drove the crowd wild. On screen Emma is known for Hermione's quips and wit, but the actress is turning into quite the fashion icon. She showed off her chic Burberry style touching down in the city amid news that she's launching a line of eco-clothing with Alberta Ferretti. Unknown Trailer: January Jones Can't Remember Liam Neeson

Mad Men may have bid adieu for the year, but you won't have to do without star January Jones. The actress stars in Unknown, a dramatic thriller due out Feb. 18, as the wife of Liam Neeson. The couple is happily together until Neeson's character, Dr. Martin Harris, is involved in a car accident and when he wakes up, he finds that his identity has been stolen from him. After he tracks down his lovely wife, she claims to not recognize him, and even worse, she introduces him to her husband - another Dr. Martin Harris. Cue Liam Neeson's head exploding.

While Neeson tries to figure out if it's him or the world that's gone crazy, he seeks out Diane Kruger, a mysterious cab driver who seems to be the key to his identity problem.
