Keri Leaves Brooklyn to Show Her Film in Manhattan

Keri Russell was casual for a walk in Manhattan on Friday afternoon, but by the evening she was dressed up in her usual black for a screening of her film Leaves of Grass. The movie, which costars Edward Norton, hits theaters in limited release Friday after premiering last Fall during the Toronto Film Festival. Keri's had a few projects hit the big screen this year with January's Extraordinary Measures, but her next move will be onto TV when she joins Will Arnett in the series Wilde Kingdom.

Movie Preview: Ed Norton and Ed Norton in Leaves of Grass

That double Ed Norton in the title is not a typo; Leaves of Grass stars the talented actor in a dual role, as polar opposite twin brothers.

As twins, Norton really goes for it - one twin, Bill, is straight-laced, while the other, Brady, is a mulleted hick with a heavy Southern accent. I've missed Norton's presence, but I'm wondering if this is going to a be an amazing acting opportunity or an embarrassing diversion for him. Joining him in the cast sans outrageous accents is Keri Russell, Susan Sarandon, and Richard Dreyfuss. It's a little hard to tell the tone of the movie from the trailer; it's been described as a comedic thriller, but I can't tell if it wants to be Adaptation or Joe Dirt.

Tom Cruise on His Beautiful, Creative Wife and Growing Up Without His Dad Around

Tom Cruise chatted with Playboy about his new movie Rock of Ages, but the conversation between the actor and interviewer Michael Fleming got quite personal. No stranger to promoting movies, Tom is happy to discuss his career and ambitions, but rarely talks about his childhood. However, in Playboy, Tom gave a great deal of insight about growing up with his mom and sisters, but not his dad. Tom also spoke about the tough career time he went through in 2005 after PR-unwise interviews on the Today show and Oprah. Tom additionally had nothing but kind words to say about his wife Katie Holmes and their family. Here are highlights:

On loving Katie: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. When she becomes interested in something, she doesn't talk about it, she does it. One week I said to her, 'You've been up in the middle of the night. Is everything okay?' She smiled and then threw this thing on my desk and said, 'I wrote this script.' She wanted to try it, and she did. She wanted to try designing clothes, and now her line is wonderful and, to me, an example of how she just creates beautiful things in her life. She has a voice and warmth as an artist, as a mother. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say - I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
On growing up without his dad around: "It wasn't a big conflict when I was growing up; that's just the way it was. I don't look back and feel bad. I know some people do, but it's not a burden I carry through life. It's more like, OK, this happened. That's how he behaved, that's how he did things. He tried, but it just was who he was. Traveling has given me a broader understanding of people, and I've always been interested in the similarities we have and why people make certain choices in life. I got an introduction to that as a young child, but it never felt like a weight I carried on my shoulders."
On how he looks so young: "I honestly have no idea. [laughs] I work. I'm always with family. I train, go without sleep. I just go hard."

The Dangers That Lurk in Your Easter Basket!

It's almost Easter weekend, and that may mean baskets of goodies around the house. But beyond the risks of sweeteners and chocolates, there are plenty of threats looming in any sweet-looking Easter basket. Even though paper "grass" is not as dangerous, the shiny, pastel bits seen here can lure in a curious cat (or pup), but pose the same problem as tinsel - strands can't be digested, get stuck in their intestines, and totally mess up the digestive system.

What other hazards lurk inside? Dig deeper and

On the subject of digging, decorated hard-boiled eggs may taste fine to a pet now (dyed shells and all - yuck!) but, if he decides to bury it in the backyard and retrieve it later, he can get very sick from eating those rotten eggs. For the fake front, plastic eggs often smell of the treats inside tempting a pooch to take a nibble. And, if those treats are jellybeans, forget about it. Jellybeans are hard for many children to chew and can cause a choking hazard, so imagine what it'd do to a pup!

Lastly, small children's toys may also look like toys to a pet, but these fragile knickknacks can wreak havoc on a pup's delicate tum. They're definitely not gonna hold up to his chompers and, if he gets plastic bits stuck inside, he may have to have surgery. Not a great way to celebrate any holiday. Be on the safe side and don't leave gifts for the two-legged family members unsupervised from the furry friends. And, if you are hiding treats around the house, keep pets in another room and total up all the prizes after they're found to make sure none have been hidden too well for a person . . . but not for a doggie's powerful sniffer!

With spring gardening just around the corner, here's what you need to do to get your green space ready for planting.

Winter is slowly loosening its grip on us and on our green spaces. Hurry it along with a little spring planning. Here's how to get your garden ready for spring.

The big sweep
If you are like me, then the chances are good that your yard, terrace or balcony has been fending for itself through the winter. The result will be a lot of messy dead leaves, twigs, branches broken by snow or ice, cracked clay pots, dead annuals frozen in place from last year and a general appearance of horticultural bed head.

In order to get into the mood for spring before it has actually arrived and to prepare your garden for the real thing when it does, the first thing to do is head out there and collect all the debris. Then, if you have the space for it, add what you have collected to your compost pile for 2011. Read my previous post about compost to get a better idea of just how useful your own garden and kitchen pickings can be when put back to work in later months.Pruning the roses
Now is the time. The roses may look like frozen sticks but already they are thinking about putting out little red buds. Use a good pair of sharp pruners. I like Felcos. First remove any dead twigs or branches. Then cut any branches that are intertwined or crossing, as improved air circulation in the summer months wards off mildew. Shrub roses respond very well to hard pruning and the rule of thumb is to cut them back by at least half, snipping at a slant to just above an emerging bud that faces outward (to avoid in-growing branches).

If you have 'climbing' roses (they are really rambling), do not prune them now. In my early gardening days I made this mistake and lost my entire flower crop for that year. Rambling roses mostly bloom on what is called old wood, meaning the canes that the rose produced the previous year. The time to prune ramblers is right after they have bloomed. You can train ramblers now, tying them into place - the more horizontal they grow, the more flowers you will enjoy.

Photo Tip: Capture Fireworks

Planning on staking out the perfect patch of grass to take in tonight's pyrotechnic show? Be sure to pack your camera before you head out! It's not hard to capture great moments, but you'll have to be ready for everything, so heed these simple tips for awesome fireworks photography.

Find a good position

Tree branches, street lamps, tall buildings, and fireworks don't mix, so be sure to find a good location. You probably won't be moving around, so search for a position where buildings and people won't obstruct your view.

Hold the camera extra steady

To avoid blurry pictures, brace your camera on a railing, the back of a chair or a table, or against a column or tree. This helps keep the camera from moving and blurring the pictures. Or use a pocket or full-size tripod that will attach to anything, like the GorillaPod.

Take lots of pictures

This one may seem silly, but we all know it's hard to estimate how long the fireworks will keep bursting. You'll want to try to catch the bursts at their maximum bloom. So keep snappin' away to make sure you go home with pictures to treasure. Also, if you know your camera is a little slow, try to anticipate a bit and snap a little early.

Try some light trails

If you want to experiment during the firework show, try shooting some light trails! Whether you're capturing the crowds as you wait, the cars as they leave, or the fireworks themselves, now's the time to try everything - you never know what you might end up with!

Tips For Cleaning the Yard Without Breaking Your Back

The cool temps of Fall mean yard work for me. How about you? There are piles of fallen leaves to rake, and I also like to plant colorful flowers to brighten up the upcoming rainy Winter.

I'm sure many of you are knee-deep in yard work as well, and while it's a great way to burn some calories, you want to do it safely so you don't end up injuring your bod. Here are some tips.

Purchase a lightweight rake made out of plastic instead of metal. The plastic glides more easily on the grass compared to the metal, making less effort needed on your part.
When raking, keep your core stable and upright, and use your arms to pull the leaves toward you instead of hunching over. It'll tone your upper body and prevent pain in your back and neck.
If you have woods on your property, rake leaves into small piles that you carry away on a tarp. Don't try to pull too much at once, as that's a good way to strain a muscle. If you have to bag your leaves, bend your knees out to the sides and squat down to pick up piles instead of bending at your waist. This will work your booty and also prevent lower back pain.
If you have heavy things like tree stumps and rocks to clear off your lawn, use a wheelbarrow instead of carrying them yourself.
Bring a bottle of water outside and drink often. Even though you may not be at your gym, it's still a good workout.
Take breaks often. No need to do all three hours of lawn work at once. Do 20 minutes and then stretch for five. Also know when to call it a day. You can always do more yard work tomorrow.
