What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

It's Tuesday, which means your Netflix queue is about to get a bit fresher and longer. I've gone through today's new DVD and Blu-ray releases and have some recommendations for what you should rent next.

The Proposal

This Summer's super successful rom-com, The Proposal, stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a pretty predictable scheme (you know, girl proposes to boy to avoid deportation), but I enjoyed this surprisingly funny movie. I tend to like both Reynolds and Bullock in general, and their chemistry in this one is pretty irresistible. It was also an audience-pleaser, raking in enough money in ticket sales to make it one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.

read more. Drag Me to Hell Drag Me to Hell, starring Justin Long and Alison Lohman, earned props in the horror genre for its clever premise and witty dialogue. Lohman stars as Christine, a bank teller whose life takes a turn for the terrifying when she is cursed by a gypsy. Long plays her boyfriend and sidekick who tries to help her regain control and banish the spirits. I've heard this one is more fun than scary, and it marks Sam Raimi's return to the camp-horror genre (he's behind the Evil Dead franchise) and a respite from the Spiderman movies. 92%
Land of the Lost In Land of the Lost, Will Ferrell stars as Rick Marshall, who finds himself stuck in a parallel universe littered with dinosaurs and ape men. With his sidekicks Holly and Will, the trio takes on the adventure of a lifetime and try to find their way back home. The Summer blockbuster didn't do too well in theaters, making some wonder whether Ferrell fatigue had set in. However, the fun casting of Danny McBride and Anna Friel as Will and Holly could make this movie watchable. DVD extras include deleted scenes, a Danny McBride featurette, and a Devil’s Canyon Gift Shop Commercial and Tour. 26%

Box Office: The Hangover Hangs On to the Top Spot

The Hangover had another fantastic weekend at the box office. The comedy came in at No. 1 with an estimated $33.4 million, and is now being called a bona fide box office phenomenon. Pixar's Up also did very well, coming in second place with an estimated $30.5 million over the weekend. According to Variety, "It's unusual for two films like Hangover and Up to simultaneously have such solid holds domestically."

Meanwhile, The Taking of Pelham 123 debuted at No. 3 and earned a solid $25 million, followed by Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost took the fifth spot while Eddie Murphy's newest comedy, Imagine That, had a fairly dismal debut at No. 6.

Up and The Hangover Have a Photo Finish at the Box Office

Adults flocked to see The Hangover over the weekend, helping the comedy earn an estimated $43.3 million. However, it wasn't quite enough to bump Pixar's family-friendly movie, Up, out of the top spot with its estimated $44.2 million. Despite coming in second place, The Hangover's debut far exceeded expectations and is "the third best opening ever for an R-rated comedy."

Meanwhile, Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost is being called the first "bomb" of the Summer. The adventure flick, which received pretty bad reviews, came in at No. 3 with only $19.5 million over the weekend.

Nia Vardalos's romantic comedy My Life in Ruins also debuted this weekend, coming in at No. 9.

Which Movie Will Win This Weekend's Box Office?

Up, Pixar's box office hit, faces some competition this weekend. Family movies are often super successful, so Will Ferrell's Land of the Lost has a shot at winning the box office. Then again, there could be plenty of adults who've seen Up and now have a healthy appetite for some more adult entertainment, like The Hangover.

The Super Bowl Movie Spots: Transformers 2, Year One and More

It was like movie preview-palooza during the Super Bowl this year with spots airing for Transformers 2, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Angels and Demons, Monsters vs. Aliens, Land of the Lost and Pixar's Up. Did you catch them all? Which one did you like the most?

I was more impressed with the preview for G.I. Joe than I thought I would be and the spots for Up and Monsters vs. Aliens are adorable. I think my favorite, though, is the one for the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Year One starring Jack Black, Michael Cera and Paul Rudd. Will Ferrell Is Searching for Dinosaurs

Fresh off the lukewarm reception and box office numbers of Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell is already hard at work on his next project - a remake of Land of the Lost. It looks like he got himself a pretty great hat to help shield him from the sun baring down on the La Brea Tar Pits. While some of his shtick is a little predictable at this point, it should be fun to see how he brings this story back to life.

Critics have been told that the thriller Pathology, starring Milo Ventimiglia, will now release in March instead of November.
ComingSoon reports that Eric Bana will play the villainous Nero in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie.
CNN reports that a new REM song will premiere tonight during "Anderson Cooper 360."
Jake Gyllenhaal will star in DreamWorks' Untitled Movie Project about a private moon expedition, Variety reports.

Pilot Scoop: Scandal

With ABC's midseason drama Scandal, Shonda Rimes, the mastermind behind Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, moves out of the hospital and into Washington DC. Kerry Washington heads up a team of consultants who specialize in defusing political scandals, and if you're wondering if the new show will be juicy enough to make room for on your DVR, I've got a few opinions that may help you.

What it's about: Washington plays Olivia Pope, a brilliant and ambitious political "fixer" who runs her own firm to clean up PR messes. Though she relies on her gut and is incredibly successful helping others, her personal life is kind of a mess. Columbus Short and Lost's Henry Ian Cusick also star as part of her team.
Where it works: Lost fans will be happy to see Cusick as a dapper consultant (and on safe, dry land). Washington is also a beautiful asset as the leading lady, and there seem to be a lot of complicated relationships just under the surface.
Where it doesn't: While Olivia's interesting relationship with the fictional president (Tony Goldwyn) is certainly scandalous, her chemistry with Goldwyn leaves something to be desired.
You might like this show if: You watch Grey's Anatomy but have never particularly loved the medical setting.
When it's on: Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC, starting April 5

Pirate Rock! Disney's Sharky and Bones Open Up About Pirate Culture, Jake, and Peter Pan

Can you talk like a pirate? If your lil one is between 2 and 5 years old, chances are he'll know exactly what we're talking about!

Since its launch last February, Disney's Jake and the Neverland Pirates has become the top-ranking series among kids in that age group. The animated show - about a new crew of pirates who work together to outwit Captain Hook and Smee around Pirate Island - is about to embark on its second season with a prime-time special Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns (airing Feb. 13), where the little boy who won't grow up enlists the minipirates to help him find his lost shadow. As with the daily show, the special will feature original pirate rock songs written and sung by Sharky and Bones of The Never Land Pirate Band. I spoke with Loren Hoskins and Kevin Hendrickson, the men behind Sharky and Bones and the stars of the live-action music videos featured at the end of each episode, about the popularity of pirate culture and what it can teach tots today.

LilSugar: Obviously you two are well versed in little kids' obsessions with pirates. How did it start for you two?
Kevin Hendrickson (Bones): It started before our kids. Loren and I met maybe 12 years ago, and we both just had a love of pirates and the old Disney records we grew up listening to. We decided to make a pirate album for kids, even though we didn't have kids.
Loren Hoskins (Sharky): We were pirates before pirate was cool. We had an affinity for pirate and pirate culture and the old Disneyland rides - you know the old Pirates of the Caribbean attraction - and we combined all those into a rock album for kids of all ages. We say "for buccaneers of all ages" because we had a lot of fans that were not kids and a lot of fans that were kids and then families that were fans. We just decided to not be a children's band, but a band for all buccaneers!

LilSugar: It's been almost 60 years since Disney released Peter Pan, and unlike other Disney flicks, it hasn't received a rerelease or a 3D upgrade. Why do you think the pirate obsession remains so strong today?
Loren Hoskins (Sharky): I have always maintained that what pirates represent for play is all the best things about play. That's imagination, adventure, being bold-hearted, silly voices, and fun dress-up costumes. You put all that together and you get classic kid play. It's like pirates and dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were huge for a while, and I think for the same reason – you can just go "roaar," and play all these great games, and they were bold and adventurous and from exotic locations. Pirates are the same thing. They're one of those classic play building blocks

Brad Pitt Screens Moneyball as Angelina Jolie Does 60 Minutes

Brad Pitt joined his Moneyball costar Jonah Hill in LA last night for a special screening of their film. It was a rare domestic viewing for Brad, who in recent weeks has taken the movie around the world, from the Tokyo International Film Festival to a short South Korean tour. Brad and Angelina are currently on the West Coast with their six kids, and he took the oldest four out for a special Thanksgiving weekend theater trip to see Hugo.

Angelina, meanwhile, is prepping for the release of In the Land of Blood and Honey. As part of her press efforts, she appeared on 60 Minutes last night and revealed a unique career ambition. Angelina once wanted to direct funerals, and is surprised that her career's taken the path of making movies instead. She said, "It sounds like this very strange, eccentric, dark thing to do, but in fact, I lost my grandfather and was very upset with his funeral . . . How somebody passes and how family deals with this passing and what death is should be addressed in a different way. If this whole acting thing didn't work out, that was going to be my path."
