Tribeca Preview: Lake City

The description of this movie caught my eye largely because of the eclectic cast list: Sissy Spacek, Rebecca Romjin, Drea de Mateo, and . . . Dave Matthews. Yup, Dave "Ants Marching" Matthews. The story follows Billy (Troy Garity) and his young son Clayton who are on the run from Billy's wife's (de Mateo) drug dealer (Matthews) after his wife stiffs him and disappears. Desperate, Billy hides out at his mother's (Spacek) countryside house in Virginia where he "reconnects with his childhood friend, now a local police officer (Rebecca Romijn), and begins to confront his troubled past" in the midst of escalating threats against his family.

I love seeing Sissy Spacek still getting work, and a family drama seems best suited for her (though she is also pretty funny as Andy Samberg's mom in Hot Rod). Also, after his turn on House, I'm curious to see what Dave Matthews can do with this threatening drug-dealer role.

5 Sci-Fi Locations We'd Like to Vacation To

It's pretty obvious that we love sci-fi, space, and everything galactic, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that we can often be found daydreaming about vacationing to a totally out-of-this-world location. Call us crazy, but if buying a ticket to one of these spacey vacation spots were an option, we'd be all over it.

Cloud 9 - The Colonial Fleet's luxury liner was the perfect getaway for the crew of the Battlestar Galactica to unwind during leave, allowing them to soak in the (faux) sunlight and get a break from the cold steel and metal decks of the ship. If Cloud 9 was still around, it seems like the perfect way to kick off space travel while still keeping Earthlings sane with the comforts of home.
Endor - The forest moon resembles California's redwood forests, and would be a great place to really get away from it all and reconnect with nature by camping - or glamping - in a high (well-appointed) tree house.
Fhloston Paradise - This luxury space cruise ship has "the most beautiful concert hall in all the universe" and amazing views of the planet landscape below. We could do without any battle conflicts while we're aboard, though.
Etheria - This small planet that She-Ra calls home has lighter gravity than Earth so you can have some fun jumping far distances. Think of it like one big trampoline; just steer clear of The Fright Zone and Beast Island.
Naboo - The picturesque landscape of Naboo's capital city of Theed would be the perfect wedding location for Earthlings who are craving an out-of-this-world ceremony but still like the feel of Italy's Lake Como.

So when the world is your oyster, how do you decide in which part to settle? Here are six questions to ask when figuring out which city is best for you:

Will I find good work there?

In today's tough market, Generation Y has had a particularly difficult time finding and keeping a job: While the job market struggles to regain its footing, with the national unemployment rate at 9.5% as of June, 25- to 34-year-olds suffer joblessness at a 10.3% rate, and 20- to 24-year-olds are unemployed at a staggering 15.3% rate. But some areas have held up better against the recession. Austin, Tex., Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C., for example, have experienced lower unemployment than the rest of the country.

Jobs in certain industries are more prevalent in some areas. For example, if you’re interested in politics, the nation’s capital is the obvious choice. Or if you aspire to “make it work” as fashion’s next hot designer, the Big Apple might suit you best. An expansive restaurant empire, a talk show, and a children's foundation aren't enough to keep Mario Batali busy; the chef also released his ninth cookbook, Molto Batali: Simple Family Meals From My Home to Yours, in the past week. Yet surprisingly, when we caught up with him, what we discovered was an underlying theme to his life philosophy: that of simplicity. Whether it's the return of the family meal, his healthy eating philosophy, or his plans for the holidays, everything in this chef's life seems to reflect his inclination toward a pared-down, rustic lifestyle.

We checked in with America's foremost Italian chef for an update on Eataly, his growing food emporium; the hottest ingredient in Italian cooking right now; and, his thoughts on the always-controversial Anthony Bourdain.

YumSugar: Family meal cookbooks seem to be a big thing right now. Why do you think that is, and what's the point of view of your cookbook?
Mario Batali: The family meal has always been an important part of the American psyche; it's just been on hiatus for a few decades. It all comes back to my belief that it's all about family, children, and confidence through the guise of deliciousness. Entertaining at home for family and friends rounds out the equation.

YS: What are your plans for the holidays this year?
MB: We'll be at our house in northern Michigan for Christmas. I bake the ham in my wood-burning oven.

YS: Porchetta has certainly had its moment in the spotlight. What's going to be the next big Italian ingredient?

Halle Berry Lists Her Modern Quebec Cabin

Halle Berry is saying au revoir to her gorgeous, secluded 63-acre property in Saint-Hippolyte, Québec. Berry's former flame and father to her daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry, Gabriel Aubry, prompted the purchase of the modern cabin back in 2008 - his parents live nearby in a Montreal suburb. The property, which was then listed for $1.85 million, is now back on the market for $1.9 million according to Real Estalker.

Within an hour of the gorgeous city of Montreal, this secluded property features a private spring-fed lake, cathedral ceilings in the modern, rustic interiors, an en-suite master bedroom, a large woodburning stove, and woodclad interiors. George Clooney Kicks Off a Star-Studded Venice Film Festival With His Ides of March Ladies

George Clooney was the lucky man in the middle between Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei this morning at a photo call for The Ides of March during the first day of the Venice Film Festival. Evan was decked out in a suit from Dolce & Gabanna while Marisa wore a dress from Preen. They were joined by leading men Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman as well as writer Grant Heslov, though it seems Ryan Gosling has yet to get in on the fun. George made a grand entrance into the city yesterday, arriving on boat with glamorous friends like Cindy Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber. Cindy, Rande, and George were fresh off a fun weekend at the actor's Lake Como estate, which also hosted his movie buddies Marisa and Evan. George is currently all about his political thriller, but he just pulled the plug on another project - George dropped out of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which is to be directed by Steven Soderbergh. We'll get another glimpse of George and his cast later today, as they're expected to be the first stars to dress up for a red carpet premiere!

George Clooney waved to fans as he arrived in Venice by boat this afternoon. He's just in time for the city's film festival, which features The Ides of March as the opening movie. George wrote, directed, and starred in the film alongside Ryan Gosling, Evan Rachel Wood, and Marisa Tomei. Ryan is also expected to attend the world premiere tomorrow. George and Ryan have the support of George's pals, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, who were also along for the ride with George today. George hosted Rande, Cindy, Marisa, and Evan at his Lake Como home over the weekend, and even Bono put in a shirtless appearance. George is the first star to show up for the festivities, which will also hopefully bring out Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, and others.

Don’t use this tip for the patterned china, of course-stick with items that are likely to be more generic, like towels or kitchen appliances.

3. Go In On Group Gifts

Team up with a few friends to get a present beyond your budget. Perhaps each of you pitches in $100 to get them a few nights at a B&B for a getaway weekend, or you each drop $50 to get them a couples massage.

4. Buy In Bulk

This one is a bit trickier. There aren’t that many things you can buy in bulk that you’d actually give as a wedding gift, but we did think of one great wedding season standby: champagne.
