John Wells and NBC Swap Doctors for Cops

ER has been in NBC's Thursdays-at-10 time slot for so long (going on 15 years now!) that it's hard to imagine what could replace it when the show goes off the air next Spring. But now there's news of one possibility - and it comes from a familiar source: ER's own executive producer, John Wells.

Wells will be producing a pilot for NBC called LAPD, which is already being considered as a potential replacement for ER on Thursday nights. Ann Biderman, who won an Emmy for writing on NYPD Blue back in 1994, is writing the script for the pilot.

The description of the project is pretty vague at this point - just that it "chronicles the lives of a group of police officers in Los Angeles." OK, not a lot of information. But hey, ER was basically a show chronicling the lives of a group of hospital workers in Chicago, and that worked out just fine.

Wells has also produced shows about politicians (The West Wing) and firefighters (Third Watch), but his one foray into the world of crime - the short-lived Smith, about a crew of professional thieves - only made it through three episodes back in 2006. Maybe Wells will have better luck on the other side of the law. Would you check out his take on police work?

Faster Than a Speeding Donut! LAPD Gets Tough on Fat

Drop the donut and put your hands in the air!! That's what dietitian, Rana Parker, is telling officers in the LAPD. The police department hired her as their full time diet coach.

The Department is cracking down on overweight officers with the hope that it will make them better at their jobs and potentially save more lives. Fit officers can more easily sprint after criminals, feel better about themselves, and help improve the image of the force.

Instead of hitting up a drive-through, Parker suggests keeping energy bars, fruit, or a peanut butter sandwich in the cruiser. She works mostly with recruits, in hopes of in-multi-graining them with good eating habits.

Since police departments across the country are relaxing recruiting requirements, including body fat percentage, this policy might be necessary.

Do you think the LAPD's plan to make sure everyone in Los Angeles has a nutritionist is a good use of taxpayers' money? Could healthy officers slim down the state budgets, since taxpayers pay for their health care?

Jake Gyllenhaal Is Packing Heat and Keeping His Guns Covered on Set

Jake Gyllenhaal was joined by costars America Ferrera and Michael Pena on the LA set of their cop drama End of Watch yesterday. It was a busy day for Michael, who slipped out of his police uniform and into a suit and continued on to Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theater for the premiere of his new comedy, 30 Minutes or Less. This project is America's first return to the big screen since tying the knot with Ryan Piers Williams earlier this Summer. She plays an LAPD officer along with the guys, though America wasn't spotted hitting the streets with Jake and Michael, who trained together prior to production. With the exception of a shirtless Hawaiian getaway, Jake's been keeping his six-pack under wraps since filming began.
