Tomatoes to Kill Again, Apparently

Might we have another Snakes on a Plane on our hands? Maybe. Only this time, picture tomatoes. Angry tomatoes. Tomatoes that viciously attack people. And not just lame stand-up comedians - all kinds of people! Oh, the horror.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the 1978 cult horror movie Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! will be remade by the same guys who brought us the viral Ask a Ninja videos, Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine.

Perhaps exaggerating a tad, Nichols commented, "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! is the masterwork of a generation. We can only aspire to recapture that magic."

I'm anxious to find out what kind of magic we can expect from this second helping of tomatoes. All Hollywood Reporter can provide is this: "No changes to the original plot have been revealed, but it still is expected to revolve around killer tomatoes."

Killer App: Red Potatoes With Tomato-Avocado Salsa

Not so long ago, I fell in love with mini twice-baked potatoes. Naturally, I just had to try another recipe for a bite-size potato; this time I made potatoes topped with tomato-avocado salsa. These potatoes are less labor intensive, but just as delicious. The potatoes are roasted until they're browned and a little crunchy, then topped with the fresh salsa and a dollop of a sour cream.

My guests enjoyed them both warm and at room temperature, so don't worry about serving them right away. Short on time? Pick up prepackaged salsa and guacamole; you only have to roast and assemble. There are certain dishes that I'm obsessed with. Among them are shrimp appetizers and crostini, so imagine my delight when I came across Giada de Laurentiis's recipe for a shrimp crostini appetizer! The most important part of this dish is the bread; select a loaf that's sturdy and can hold the gooey thick topping. It's a mixture of plump pink shrimp, vibrant peppery arugula, and juicy fresh tomatoes. There's a slight creaminess thanks to the addition of mascarpone cheese that also provides a great richness. Chicken Soup With Kale, Garlic, and Sweet Potatoes

We love kale but had never thought to include it in a traditional Fall staple: chicken soup! That brilliant idea comes from Fresh Tart.

My mom is recovering from major surgery here at our home. She spent the first couple of weeks in a hospital and rehab facility, where the food was...truly awful. I brought her little farmer's market treats like sliced tomatoes and strawberries, to remind her that not all food comes from boxes and cans, but man, the overall effect of feeding healing people crap food is seriously depressing.

She is glad to be here now, noshing what appeals from my endless stream of cooking, and starting to cook for herself again too. She can't eat more than a few bites of anything at a time - and all she's truly hungry for is sweets, ha - but she made herself a killer BLT yesterday, thick with a perfect tomato and a pile of freshly picked lettuce, and managed to eat half of it.

Baby steps on the road to recovery.

She also managed a few bites of this soup, which really hit the spot on a cool, fall day. I love chicken soup for its endless versatility, and of course for its soothing, healing deliciousness. I studded this version with kale, sweet potatoes, garlic, and just a spot of bacon because my mom loves bacon.

I am always looking for easy appetizers to throw together for an impromptu gathering. Inspired by PartySugar's scrumptious caprese skewers, I decided it was time to test out a Greek salad skewer. All it takes is a quick chop of ingredients and in about 20 minutes, I had a plate full of these delectable bites. The key is to make sure you have the right portion of each component - you don't want to overdo with the Feta or olives. Perfectly Seasonal: Toasted Farro Summer Salad

Farro is the latest ancient grain to make a mainstream comeback, and I've been cooking up a storm with the wheat variety, using it in place of rice to make "farrotto," adding it to soups, and utilizing it as the base for Asian-style vegetable bowls.

My favorite way to employ it during hot weather is with this ingenious seasonal salad by Melissa Clark. Start by toasting farro, until it's nutty and golden brown; toss in parsley, scallions, lemon juice, and cherry tomatoes, for a meatier riff on tabbouleh; then top with crumbled cheese fricos for a crispy, salty finish.

For more substance, I served this salad with a side of grilled shrimp and Italian salsa verde, but you could add other seafood like scallops or lump crabmeat. Or, as Melissa suggested, bits of salumi: "Cubes of pancetta or sopressata would be killer!" she told me. Great - I've got an excuse to make this again sometime soon.
