Katherine Heigl to Take Another Leave of Absence From Grey's

Stop me if you've heard this one before - Katherine Heigl is going to be leaving Grey's Anatomy for the second time this season. Though Izzie returns to Seattle Grace/Mercy West on tonight's episode (just in time for the arrival of Kim Raver), Heigl is set to take a belated maternity leave next year to spend time with her newly adopted daughter.

I'm all for spending quality time with family, but this seems a bit suspect - especially given how many times we've heard rumors of Heigl's desire to leave the show. At this point, I feel like Heigl should just call it quits and keep her focus on her movie career; it would also be a perfect time for Izzie to make an easy exit from Grey's now that she's been fired.

Katherine Heigl to Take a Leave of Absence From Grey's

Drama among the cast of Grey's Anatomy isn't exactly a rarity, and it's even less shocking when Katherine Heigl is involved. The latest is that Heigl is leaving Grey's - but rest assured, it's not forever. She'll be taking a five episode hiatus to film Life as We Know It.

Five episodes may not sound like much, but it'll have a big impact on the upcoming season, especially since Ellen Pompeo will have to take maternity leave at some point. We'll also get to see Izzie's life take a new direction - supposedly Dr. Stevens will be fired from Seattle Grace to make room for new doctors. Sounds kinda harsh, but assuming Izzie is still battling cancer, it actually makes more sense that she stop working in the hospital. I'm just not sure what they'll do with her now - is she just going to be kept around as Mrs. Alex Karev, greeting him with baked goods at the end of his long days in surgery? After a few years of "will she or won't she?" I have a feeling that it can't be much longer before Heigl leaves for good.

What do you make of this news - will you miss Izzie for a few episodes? What would you like to see happen to her character now that she's not at the hospital anymore?

Do You Prefer Katherine Heigl On TV or In Movies?

Whatever you think of Katherine Heigl, there's no denying she's one of the few current stars of screens both big and small. Grey's Anatomy, where she's recently agreed to appear on another season, is still a highly watched and talked-about TV show. And in theaters, all three movies with her in leading roles - Knocked Up, 27 Dresses, and The Ugly Truth - have had at least respectable results at the box office.

This all has raised an interesting debate: Should Heigl flee TV for movies? Or should she stay on the small screen, where the roles are potentially meatier? This week, two critics weighed in: one saying Heigl should stay on TV, where she can play something more than "the postmodern shrew", another arguing that it's time for Heigl to pull a Clooney and say farewell to TV.

Do you think Heigl is better suited for TV roles, or should she milk her big-screen appeal?

The Ugly Truth: A Misogynistic Mess

When reviewing The Ugly Truth, it's impossible to ignore what Katherine Heigl had to say in 2007 about her film Knocked Up:

"It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a b*tch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie."

For a very similar reason, it was hard for me to love The Ugly Truth.

The ugly truth about The Ugly Truth is that it's, well, ugly. At its core, the film is a love story that tries to prove that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. What it actually succeeds at is much more sleazy, belaboring the point that men only want sex (read: women who eat hot dogs seductively) and women only want love (read: men who drink red wine and prefer cats to dogs). You don't have to be Katherine Heigl to find these stereotypes offensive.

These types of movies aren't always bad. When Harry Met Sally became a modern classic with its examination of differences between the sexes. But that movie does so smartly - it's more subtle, more nuanced, more quaint. And while When Harry Met Sally has its fair share of risqué content (who could forget the infamous deli scene?), it's tame compared to what we see in The Ugly Truth. Case in point: this scene. It's almost a carbon copy of the notorious Meg Ryan performance, except this time the leading lady is actually climaxing at a table because her vibrating underwear is being controlled by a child with a remote. Classy.

Beyond being offensive, the movie is just boringly predictable. If you've seen the trailer, you've likely figured out the entire plot. Not to mention which, that two-minute clip is actually better than the film! The acting isn't the problem here: Heigl and Gerard Butler are great in their roles, as are many of the supporting characters. The two leads carry the film easily - it's just not a film worth carrying. Frankly, they should have known better.

I can't wait to see what Katherine Heigl has to say about this in the future.

Watch, Pass, TiVo or Rent: The Ugly Truth

This Friday we'll see if Katherine Heigl can add another hit romantic comedy to an impressive resume (that already includes Knocked Up and 27 Dresses) when The Ugly Truth hits theaters. Heigl stars as a TV show producer who squares off against the network's hot new relationship correspondent (Gerard Butler). They squabble over courtship ideals - which of course only puts their obvious chemistry and attraction to each other on display.

So, are you ready for a break from Summer's explosive blockbusters and set to take in a little romance at the theater? Or will you hold off on making the decision on this one until the movie is on TV or DVD?

Katherine Heigl to Star in Life As We Know It

Katherine Heigl is making movies like there's no tomorrow, and who can blame her? She's apparently in demand. Her comedy The Ugly Truth will hit theaters this Summer and she's currently shooting Five Killers with Ashton Kutcher. She's been attached to two book-to-film adaptations (Escape and Lost and Found) and has one more movie in development.

This next film directed by TV producer Greg Berlanti, Life As We Know It, sounds like the kind of tearjerker for which Heigl's role as Izzie Stevens has prepared her:

Story follows two unattached adults whose worlds are turned upside down when their mutual best friends die in an accident and name them as caregivers for their orphaned daughter.

Sounds sad but apparently it will be romantic too. Who should play her leading man? Are you glad to see Heigl landing so many movie roles?

Heigl on Grey's For Another Season: Yay? Or Ugh?

Many of you voted to keep Izzie alive on Grey's Anatomy so perhaps you'll be pleased to learn that Katherine Heigl will apparently return to the show next season. Then again, the majority of votes also went to Izzie in this poll about which original Grey's character you would ditch. Though this answers one of my questions about the next season, I still feel a little worn out - I was preparing for her to die and now she's staying on? Huh.

Is this good news? Do you want another season of Grey's with Izzie (and apparently without George)? Or do you think she should just leave the show already?
