Movie Preview: Robert De Niro in Everybody's Fine

I kind of love every movie about grown children going home to their parents - Home for the Holidays, Junebug, The Family Stone. There's just so much fodder for humor and emotion.

But in Everybody's Fine, none of Robert De Niro's grown children go home to visit him, sending him on a journey to visit each one of his offspring. Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore, and Kate Beckinsale star as the trio of "kids" - pretty cute cast, right? You know what's even cuter? De Niro as a caring father and grandpa. Don't get me wrong - I love him in the heavy, dramatic stuff, but when I see him as a family man, I melt like butter. Family matters aren't always all lightness though, and it looks like we can expect some complicated interactions, too. Even if it's a bit sappy, I'm looking forward to this one.

Movie Preview: Winged Creatures

I watched the trailer for Winged Creatures before I knew the full cast list. I already knew that it included Forrest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson and was surprised to find a whole slew of other amazing actors involved, including Jackie Earle Haley, Guy Pearce, Kate Beckinsale, and Big Love's Jeanne Tripplehorn. In addition, there's Dakota Fanning as a real, live teenager - not a precocious little kid.

The plot reminds me a little bit of that ill-fated TV show The Nine (which probably should have just been a movie in the first place): "A group of strangers form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a Los Angeles diner."

The whole look and feel of the film is eerie, moving, and quite sad, not unlike the tone of Mystic River (but slightly less dark). There doesn't appear to be a release date yet for Winged Creatures, but I hope it comes out soon. To check out the trailer, read more.

Actors Go Speechless to Support Writers

Negotiations in the writers' strike are resuming today, but for the moment, pencils are still down in Hollywood. What would a writerless TV and movie season look like? Several A-list actors are offering up their interpretations in a series of videos called Speechless.

The videos, which feature the cast of Ugly Betty, Harvey Keitel, Kate Beckinsale, Holly Hunter, David Schwimmer, and many more, premiered on the Deadline Hollywood Web site over the weekend and have now spread to various online video sites. Eleven have been posted so far, but there are many, many more to come.

The videos range from just a few seconds to several minutes long. Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy whistle in theirs, while Holly Hunter acts out a scene about the outsourcing of scripts to a call center in India. One of my favorites features David Schwimmer and Kate Beckinsale as a couple on the phone with nothing to say; another finds Laura Linney using Scene It cards as inspiration for a scene she decides to write herself. Jennifer Hudson Joining All-Star Cast of Winged Creatures?

I was fine with Jennifer Hudson winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar - until I saw Adriana Barraza in Babel. I'm willing, however, to give the former "Idol" singer more chances to prove herself as an actress.

Today, Variety is reporting that Hudson might star in Winged Creatures, playing the daughter of fellow 2007 Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. Apparently, Hudson is busy recording her debut album (set for a Fall release on Arista) but still wants to join the cast, which sounds totally awesome. According to the Variety story:

The Rowan Woods-directed adaptation of the Roy Freirich novel about survivors of a brutal murder in a restaurant also stars Kate Beckinsale, Guy Pearce, Dakota Fanning, Jackie Earle Haley, Embeth Davidtz, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Josh Hutcherson.

I'm not familiar with Aussie director Woods, but I love a good ensemble movie, and this plot, following the witnesses as they cope with the crime and its aftermath, sounds intriguing.
