Linklater's Next Rom-Com to Include Obama's Inauguration

Not one year after the fact, President Obama's inauguration is being incorporated into a romantic comedy to be directed by Richard Linklater. The Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, and School of Rock director will next helm Liars (A-E), a script written by Emma Forrest (who used to date Colin Farrell). The movie "is a romantic comedy about a woman who, on the way to President Obama's inauguration, retrieves lost items from her ex-boyfriends." Gotta wonder if some of these items are inspired by Farrell. . . .

No casting news on the protagonist, though Kat Dennings is reportedly on board to play the woman's friend. I wonder how Obama's inauguration and/or politics in general will play into the narrative here. Forrest could have chosen any number of events or locations as the protagonist's destination - why the inauguration? I'll be interested to find out.

Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, House Bunny)

Kat Dennings has been around for a while with roles on shows like ER and Sex and the City, and in movies like The 40-Year-Old-Virgin and Charlie Bartlett, but this was a bigger year than most for her and she's stepping into the limelight more and more. She is a master of the droll delivery and I love seeing her onscreen because she never seems fake. She comes off as a smart, cool girl and we can always use more actresses like her.

In this poll, Lucy Kate Hale (the adorable little Rose Baker on Privileged) came in second place with Tristan Wilds (90210, The Wire) taking third.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist: It's Just So Cute

I'm trying to separate the experience of watching the movie Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist from the experience of reading the book. In truth, the two bear only a few similarities and I enjoyed the book more than the movie. Still, as a standalone piece of entertainment, the movie version is fun and silly and adorable, mostly due to the great cast. At the heart of what's so likable about it are Nick and Norah themselves, two precocious, creative, music-loving teens who spend a wacky night in New York City together, both learning to grow beyond their past relationships and into something that feels exciting and right. Ah, young love. Is there anything sweeter?

If there is, it's Michael Cera's cute little face. He plays Nick, a funny, self-deprecating young man who is the sole straight guy in his band. He's struggling to get over his ex, Tris (Alexis Dziena), when he meets Norah (Kat Dennings), a droll, witty girl who shares Nick's love for a band called Where's Fluffy? Nick and Norah have an immediate connection and Nick's bandmates, sensing the possibility for Nick to forget Tris, offer to take Norah's drunk friend Caroline (Ari Graynor) home, and send Norah off with Nick in his yellow, beat-up Yugo. Things go awry, of course: Caroline runs away from Nick's friends, Nick and Norah have a fight, Tris becomes jealous and follows Nick around the city, and Norah's sort-of-ex-boyfriend Tal (Jay Baruchel) keeps making Norah feel conflicted. I'm not totally fond of the meandering story arcs, and at times the plot seems sort of oddly smushed together. But at the same time, this movie is an unusual addition to the ordinary movie offerings (the blockbuster, the dramatic weepie, the raunchy comedy, etc.). Here we have two kids who are different from the cookie-cutter teens - and they're proud of this. They love all kinds of music and have adventures in New York that don't include shopping for couture. Their friends are kooky, funny musicians, most of whom are gay. There's no angst over these things (being "individuals" among "the normals," etc.), but there is angst about those basic insecurities people feel when they find new love.

It's your cute, simple boy-meets-girl romance - but with a uniquely modern twist.

The Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Trailer Makes Me Happy

Eeeee! I love Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist already. Michael Cera stars as Nick, the bumbling, unlucky-in-love teenager (who's also a guitarist in a band - geeky-hot!) who's still hung up on his ex-girlfriend. But then Norah (Kat Dennings) asks Nick to be her temporary boyfriend so it looks like she has a date, and it works out well for both of them when Nick's ex-girlfriend sees them together and becomes jealous. From there, Nick and Norah have a long night of strange, funny adventures and, as the trailer declares, "every night has a playlist."

There's music and comedy and young love and Michael Cera. What more could you want in this sweet, teeny romance/comedy? Nick and Norah come to theaters October 3. To watch the very cute trailer, read more.
