Judy Greer Is Giving TV Another Go

Back in August, the overwhelming majority of you said that Judy Greer deserves more leading roles, and now she's getting one. The actress will be returning to the small screen in I'm With Stupid, a new comedy in development for ABC.

Based on the novel by Elaine Szewczyk, the show will focus on Manhattanite Kas Sienkiewicz (Greer), whose life takes an unexpected turn when she has a vacation fling with a park ranger in South Africa, and a few days later he shows up on her doorstep and moves in.

Greer seems to have a pretty loyal fan base out there, but it wasn't enough to save Miss Guided. I'm a bit skeptical about this project, but maybe it's just the title that's throwing me off. What do you make of this news? Will you welcome Greer back to TV with open arms?

Judy Greer has become something of a sidekick extraordinaire, and she's about to take on yet another supporting role. She'll join Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs, playing a pharmaceutical company trainee instructor. I've really enjoyed some of Greer's performances in the past, particularly in Arrested Development and 13 Going on 30.

On the other hand, she's often forgettable, and I have to wonder whether or not she's getting tired of always playing the best friend or co-worker. She had a short-lived stint as a leading lady on Miss Guidance, but what do you think - does Judy Greer deserve more leading roles?

Movie Preview: The Go-Getter With Zooey and Jena

Zooey Deschanel and Jena Malone are in this movie The Go-Getter. You know who else is in it? Judy Greer and Maura Tierney. M. Ward apparently has a role, too, and his music is included in the trailer (which makes sense, given She and Him). The movie itself was a 2007 Sundance feature and from the trailer it looks like your standard quirky indie Sundance fare. But anything that features Zooey is, in my opinion, worth giving a shot.

The plot goes like this: "When his mother dies, a teenager (Lou Taylor Pucci) takes a road trip in a stolen car to find his long-lost brother. Along the way he discovers a profound connection with the car's owner (Deschanel) and with himself as well."

HBO Show Gets Funny Ladies From Miss Guided, Underbelly

Just like many of you, I was dismayed at the cancellation of ABC's Miss Guided starring Judy Greer. I love watching her and I thought overall it was a fantastic ensemble comedy. From my poll results, it also looks like some folks are none too pleased to see Notes From the Underbelly go, too, but as sad as these cancellations are, take heart: Judy Greer and Rachael Harris (from Notes) have already scored new gigs - and on HBO, no less!

The two will star in HBO's half-hour pilot Suburban Shootout. Hollywood Reporter has more:

Based on the critically praised British series, Shootout is a dark comedy about a woman (Greer) who escapes the city for suburban bliss only to find herself caught between two rival gangs of homicidal housewives as they vie for control of their idyllic town.

In addition to Greer and Harris, so far the cast is rounded out by Kelly Preston and Reno! 911's Kerri Kenney (Deputy Trudy Wiegel!). Man, HBO is on such a roll with the female-led programming this year. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

TV Tonight: Miss Guided

These days, every network seems to be developing a comedy niche. NBC has its single-camera, deadpan workplace comedies like The Office and 30 Rock; CBS has its laugh-tracked, massively appealing Monday night lineup led by Two and a Half Men; Fox has its Sunday night animation block. ABC, though, has been largely left out of the game, gambling with shows like Cavemen and canceling other series that were wonderfully strange but little-watched (The Knights of Prosperity).

The network did score one bona fide comedy hit with Samantha Who? last Fall, though, and it's possible they have another in Miss Guided, which premieres tonight. The show stars Judy Greer (known best to me as Kitty from Arrested Development) as Becky Freely, a high school guidance counselor who returns to her alma mater for work. Sure, she may have lost the orthodontics and the terrible hair, but Becky is still a high schooler at heart - right down to the sophomoric way she talks to her crush (a Spanish teacher who's just "one language lab ahead" of his students) and cowers in the face of her high school rival, who - of course - has also gotten a job back home.

The show's had a bit of behind-the-scenes turmoil (Office writer Caroline Williams created the show; Rob Thomas of Veronica Mars was brought in to run it; he left just a short time later; now a producer from That '70s Show is in charge, which makes sense because Ashton Kutcher is one of the executive producers). But what's come out of it is a pretty funny sitcom, if you're into goofy, over-the-top, occasionally absurd humor in the style of Arrested Development or even Family Guy, so read more.

Greer completely sells her back-to-high-school role, and even though it's not always clear why Becky is doing some things (say, dancing in her office to show a student how to ask a girl out), I'm willing to go along for the ride. The flashbacks to Becky's high school days are also a highlight; one involving The Sound of Music made me laugh till I cried.

Miss Guided should get a boost from its special premiere tonight at 10:30 p.m. after Dancing with the Stars, but I'm afraid ABC is already planning to burn it off: Two episodes will air each Thursday from 8 to 9 p.m. until they're all gone. It would be great if the show takes off, though; I could see it as a good companion for Samantha Who? - or for my beloved Knights, if only they were still around. USA Today has a gallery of images from the psychological thriller The Box, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden.
It's official: Hollywood writers approved their new contract with almost 94 percent of WGA members voting in favor of the agreement, the Associated Press reports.
Miss/Guided, the ABC comedy starring Judy Greer, will premiere in March, Zap2it reports.
The next Terminator movie, starring Christian Bale, will open Memorial Day weekend of 2009, Variety reports.
Billboard writes that Justin Timberlake, Lou Reed and Billy Joel are among the people who will induct members of the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class next month in New York.
The New York Times reports that several networks are ready to claim Jay Leno once he's done with The Tonight Show next year.

Variety has the news that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will join Julianne Moore in the supernatural thriller Shelter.

Movie Preview: The Grand

When I first saw the poster for The Grand I had to groan. Not another casino movie! But then I looked a little closer and found some familiar, welcome names like Cheryl Hines, David Cross, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer and Woody Harrelson. The Game is a mockumentary-style spoof on professional gaming, with a ridiculously talented cast full of funny people.

You just have to check out this trailer for the movie which opens in limited release March 21. And in case you're wondering, yes, "The Scary German" is legendary German director Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn, Grizzly Man, Little Dieter Needs to Fly). Hilarious.

27 Dresses: Formulaic but Enjoyable

If you have just the right mindset before viewing 27 Dresses, you just might - dare I say it?- love this movie. It's not deep, it won't win any awards, but it's the perfect complement to a big buttery bucket of popcorn. And really, isn't that what going to movies like this is all about? If your expectations are low, and mine admittedly were, you will be surprised at how enjoyable this movie is. Don't get me wrong, the movie is dripping with wedding clichés, but luckily it's smart enough not to take itself too seriously. In fact, the movie takes those wedding clichés head on. My favorite example is how many times Katherine Heigl's character is told that "the great thing about the bridesmaid's dress is you can shorten the hem and wear it again." Hilarious.

True to the title, Katherine Heigl's Jane has been a bridesmaid 27 times. The movie begins with number 26 and number 27. That's right: She's a bridesmaid twice in one night. What follows is a hilarious comedy of errors as she tries to navigate two weddings: one in Manhattan, another in Brooklyn. It's quite a feat considering that Jane has to jump back and forth between the weddings, requiring, as you can imagine, a quick change in the back of a cab. The resulting antics catch the eye of Kevin, a wedding journalist played by James Marsden. But Jane's heart belongs to her boss George (Edward Burns). Smell a love triangle?

Jane's love for George is unrequited, as he is so oblivious to Jane's affection that he bypasses Jane for her sister Tess (played by Malin Akerman, Ben Stiller's wife in The Heartbreak Kid). The two fall madly in love, which leaves Jane planning a wedding for her sister and her boss. Enter Kevin.

You can take the plot from here. Jane loathes Kevin, then falls in love with him, then something happens to tear them apart, then it ends in a way that won't surprise you. What is surprising is that, despite the formula, the movie still feels fresh. I commend the cast, specifically Katherine Heigl and James Marsden. Heigl, with last year's blockbuster Knocked Up, is clearly proving that she can hold a film. And the adorable Marsden (have you seen him in Enchanted, or better yet, Hairspray?) continues to delight.

All in all, it's no Atonement, but if you typically like movies in the same vein as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, you'll adore 27 Dresses.

The movie doesn't open until January 11, 2008 but we already have a trailer for Katherine Heigl's next romantic "comedy," 27 Dresses. She plays a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and, surprise surprise, never a bride. It appears that her tendency to be kind of a doormat has something to do with her getting stepped on a lot.

Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) yet again plays the shrill friend and James Marsden looks beautiful but seems slightly dull. I wished this would be a better-looking movie, but the trailer makes it look pretty generic. To get a load of Heigl and her 27 Dresses, read more

"Veronica" Creator Moves to ABC Sitcom

With "Veronica Mars" now officially dead - despite a last-ditch marshmallow and candy campaign by fans - series creator Rob Thomas is moving onto his next project: ABC's new sitcom "Miss Guided."

The sitcom, which ABC picked up for a mid-season premiere at May's Upfronts, stars Judy Greer as a guidance counselor who returns to work at her old high school, only to find that her high school nemesis has also joined the faculty. Thomas will run the show as executive producer.

Thomas also has said that DC Comics is interested in making the fourth season of "Veronica" into a comic series, and he's still mulling a "Veronica" screenplay, so even though the show is gone from TV, it's long from being forgotten.
