Brad Pitt Might Face Off With RDJ in Sherlock Holmes Sequel

Warner Brothers is already developing a sequel to the not-yet-released Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and early gossip suggests that Brad Pitt has been in talks to join the cast as Moriarity, Holmes's rival.

Please let this be true! Not only would adding Pitt to the Downey-Law lineup help keep the Holmes franchise afloat, but Downey and Pitt in the same film is pretty much my dream - both guys have that wise-cracking persona, good looks, and it would be so much fun to see them spar.

The downside: Pitt's character Moriarity is supposedly only shown in shadow according to the script, making him impossible to actually see. Not a single shot of Pitt's face? Bummer.

No word yet if Pitt will be affecting a British accent or using his Inglorious Basterds hillbilly.

Movie Preview: Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

It would be an understatement indeed to say that we haven't seen Sherlock Holmes quite like this before. As this new trailer shows, Guy Ritchie's big screen Holmes story is full of action, violence, and good-looking people. There are quippy lines a-plenty (it is Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and Guy Ritchie in the director's chair, after all) and elements of silliness - all of which rounds out to be quite a funny and heart-poundingly tense mystery.

As you'll see in the preview, this Holmes is more of a roguish fighter than a contemplative guy chewing on his pipe. Together with his partner Watson (Jude Law), the detective engages "in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England." Sherlock Holmes opens Dec. 25. The Latest to Join Sherlock Holmes: Rachel McAdams

These two make a pretty magnificent pair, don't you think? Last we heard about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie, Jude Law was getting set to play Watson to Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes. The latest casting news is that Rachel McAdams will join the two men. The Hollywood Reporter explains:

The movie. . .takes its cue from a forthcoming comic book that producer Lionel Wigram wrote as a selling tool for a new take on the classic character. The concept sees Holmes as more adventurous and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations and mines more obscure character traits.

McAdams plays Holmes's enigmatic love interest, Irene Adler, a character who appeared in Doyle's 1891 A Scandal in Bohemia. While the character only appeared in that one story, McAdams' personage would return for any possible sequel.

I cannot wait to watch RDJ and Rachel McAdams, two darlings of the film world right now, play off one another. It's such a genius pairing.

Johnny, Jude and Colin Take Over Ledger's Last Role

This weekend some bittersweet film news hit the wire regarding the last movie Heath Ledger was working on before he tragically died January 22. The film is Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and rather than ceasing production altogether on the film, three actors will step into Ledger's role as "Tony" in the film: Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.

Variety writes that in the fantasy film, "Ledger's character steps into three different dimensions, each transporting him into a new world; worlds which will now be inhabitated by Depp, Law, and Farrell."

Good for these guys for stepping up to the plate and taking on such a challenging and delicate task. I'm curious about this whimsical film and I look forward to seeing what these three can do with the part. I hope they can do justice to Heath's last role.

First Look: My Blueberry Nights

Not only does France have a definite release date for My Blueberry Nights, but there's also a full-length trailer for the film with French subtitles. So far, there's no U.S. release date scheduled. What's up with that?

My Blueberry Nights stars Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and Norah Jones in Jones' first big feature-film role. The film screened at Cannes to mixed reviews. Most critics said director Wong Kar Wai did a stunningly beautiful job visually with his first English-language project, but that otherwise the movie lags. Jones plays a young woman who "takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way." The Gentlemanly Movie News Roundup

Forest Whitaker and Jude Law will star together in The Repossession Mambo, a futuristic thriller in which "artificial organs can be bought on credit, with the understanding that defaulting on payment will result in a fatal repossession." The movie will be directed by first-timer Miguel Sapochnik, who must be thrilled to have gotten such big talent for his first directorial venture.
What with Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me, Adam Sandler has proven himself a fairly versatile guy. However, I did a double-take when reading that he's producing and starring in a movie based on a Mitch Albom book (you know, the guy who writes a lot of "just before death" books like Tuesdays With Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven). The made-for-TV movie version of Tuesdays With Morrie was nearly as sappy as the book is, so I am curious to find out what Sandler and Co. can do with another weepy Albom piece.
In other boy comedy news, Ben Stiller has enlisted his buddy Owen Wilson, along with Nick Nolte, in Tropic Thunder for which Stiller is acting as writer/director/producer. The story follows "a group of actors who go on location to shoot a war movie, only to find that reality replicates their plot." War is so funny!
