What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

The box office winner 21 is the kind of movie I'd be happy to come across on basic cable whilst channel surfing. It has a likable cast and a not-mind-numbing-but-not-confusing plot that is perfect for a day on the couch. The movie stars newly anointed heartthrob Jim Sturgess as a geeky genius MIT senior who's having trouble drumming up enough tuition money. He's soon recruited by the no-good professor Rosa (Kevin Spacey) into a secret little card-counting operation (which includes five other MIT students, one of whom is played by Kate Bosworth) to scheme Vegas out of a lot of cash.

It's based (loosely) on the true story documented in the memoir Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions, and overall I had a good time seeing it in theaters. Special features on the two-disc edition include featurettes titled "The advantage player: The cast explains the game of blackjack and card counting," and "Money Plays: A tour of the good life."

Las Vegas: Season 5
Hey hey, it's a Vegas kind of day. For fans of the sexy NBC drama Las Vegas the fifth and final season on DVD is reason to celebrate because now your at-home collection can be complete.

The series stars manjoyment heavyweight Josh Duhamel along with Vanessa Marcil and Molly Sims. They were also able to nab Tom Selleck to lend some star power to the last season as two regulars (James Caan and Nikki Cox) exited early. Special features include a gag reel.

Transformers: (Way) Less Than Meets The Eye

If you were fond of Hasbro's Transformers action figures and have been dying to watch Industrial Light and Magic use CGI to make them come to life on screen, ignore the following review. Ditto if you love insanely loud (and inanely plotted) action movies. But if you need character development and a coherent story, read this and then - run. Run as if a giant robot that was just moments ago a boom-box is chasing you down the street. Otherwise you’ll be stuck, as I was, in two hours and twenty minutes of hell. Transformers, I’m sorry to say, sucked hard.

First, there's the story. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is your average horny eleventh-grader who wants two things more than anything: a car and the hot chick, Mikaela, played by second coming of Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox. He gets his car, a mysterious and rusty old yellow Camaro, and pretty soon, with its help, he gets the girl, too. The car, it turns out, is an Autobot he calls Bumblebee, one of the good guys of an alien robot race that has come to earth to find an important cube called “Allspark” that holds all power (don’t ask) and to keep it from the bad guy alien robots, the Decepticons, who want to use the cube’s power to destroy the earth. Why is this epic alien robot battle raging around this nobody hormonal teen? Because unbeknownst to Sam, the glasses he has been trying to sell on eBay that belonged to his great-great grandfather somehow have imprinted on them the map of the cube’s whereabouts. So, the Decepticons go online to search for the glasses. One of Transformers' saving graces is its consistent sense of humor. In one of its funnier scenes, the Decepticon Barricade, after changing from a black cop car into an imposing and gigantic robot, shouts in his booming bass voice to a bewildered Sam, “Are you LadiesMan 217?!” (referring to his eBay screen name).

But no matter how funny (and it’s not that funny) Transformers is, or how cool the transforming robots are (and trust me, after the bazillionth time one of them transforms, you will be utterly indifferent), these elements cannot change the fact that the film is organized around endless robot chase scenes and battles that just become one big CGI blur. Forget the subplot about the war in Qatar which begins the film with actors like Josh Duhamel as a soldier and John Voight as Defense Secretary, or the subplot about two hackers who try to catch the wily Decepticons, or the subplot with John Turturro and the secret government agency that’s been hiding the cube. These scenes simply drag this already interminable film into seeming infinity.

But some die-hard fans are easier to please. As I left the theatre, I heard a man say on his cell phone, "That was tight! Robots were bouncing off of buildings, man!” To him, nearly two and a half hours of that was awesome. I still demand that action movies have some kind of engaging plot and character.

Top 10 Boys of Summer

With this nice new crop of summer movies coming out, we have plenty of opportunities to enjoy our favorite men. I've rounded up my personal "top 10 list," giving props to the men I'm most excited to watch this summer. Who would be on your list?

No. 10: Paul Rudd
Often the bit part player, Rudd adds a little something special to every movie he's in, and while I know he's not a mainstream heartthrob, I totally adore this guy. I mean, is there any girl out there who didn't have a little thing for him, even sporadically, since he was so unconventionally dreamy in Clueless? This summer's super-hyped Knocked Up will be the perfect chance to see him on the big screen again (and again and again -- I have a feeling this may be one of those I see more than once).

No. 9: Josh Duhamel
I already mentioned how the Transformers movie is bringing out my inner 8-year-old boy, but I have to say a large part of the appeal is seeing Josh Duhamel heat up the screen. The "Las Vegas" TV star showed how endearing and sexy he was in guilty pleasure Win A Date with Tad Hamilton so I can't wait to see the action hero version of Josh. Hey, the requisite dramatic shirtless scene won't hurt either!

No. 8: Aaron Eckhart
Aaron Eckhart has the uncanny ability to be amazingly charming or a total sleazeball, and looks gorgeous all the while. I'm not sure how No Reservations will be as a movie, but I will have no problem watching Eckhart and his utterly charismatic smile in it.

No. 7: Steve Carell
True, I never thought I had a hankering to see Steve Carell without a shirt, but something about the way he screamed Kelly Clarkson as his chest hair was unceremoniously removed, well, it just won me over. Ha. I've got a weakness for the geeky guys with goofy smiles that can win your heart with a joke, and Carell's among the best of them. His presence might even get me to see Evan Almighty - and that's no small feat.

No. 6: Orlando Bloom
Whether he's sporting elfin ears and slinging arrows or all dirty on a pirate ship, Orlando Bloom is one beautiful man. Sometimes he's a little too pretty for my tastes, but other times - such as right here in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - he is just right. Plus, when you're standing next to Johnny and still able to steal a scene, even just a little, you know you're doing something right.

No. 5: Matt Damon
I know Pop has a major thing for Matt Damon, and I must admit, there's something adorable and compelling about him. Lucky audiences this summer can catch him in both Ocean's Thirteen and The Bourne Ultimatum.

No. 4: Chiwetel Ejiofor
I have loved Chiwetel Ejiofor ever since I saw him in Kinky Boots, and his performance in Children of Men just endeared him to me more. I think he's an amazing actor, but I also just think he's hot. I can't wait to see him in Talk to Me, in which he stars opposite Don Cheadle.

No. 3: Daniel Craig
Of course Daniel Craig is on this list. Even if he were not in The Invasion this summer (opening August 17), my massive love for him would require I find a way to sneak him in.

No. 2: The Entire Ocean's Thirteen Cast
Perhaps this is a cop-out (and yes, this is sneaking Matt Damon onto the list twice), but there are just way too many attractive men in this movie to list individually. I mean, just look at them all lined up at Cannes. If I were forced to separate, they would dominate the list. So, gentlemen of Ocean's Thirteen, I salute you.

No. 1: Johnny Depp
Frankly, Johnny Depp is the Number One man of every season. He's 21 Jump Street. He's Edward Scissorhands. He's Finding Neverland. He was once glamorous and dangerous with Kate Moss and these days a wonderful father and companion with Vanessa. Depp has no season, but lucky for all of us, he's the man of the summer in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, reprising his role as the sexy Captain Jack Sparrow. To be fair, there's no promise he won't win any and every season he gets to compete in. I mean come on, he's Johnny Depp.

"Las Vegas" Gets a Fifth Season - Without Two Stars

"Las Vegas" is one of those shows that just seems to keep trucking along. The drama, which airs Friday nights, gets lost in the shuffle for me, but apparently it's doing well: NBC just renewed it for a fifth season.

But in a weird twist, two of the show's stars won't be back: James Caan (also known as The Godfather's Sonny Corleone) says he wants to get back into film, while Nikki Cox apparently got axed because of budget cuts. Which seems odd for a show the network just decided to bring back, but hey, I don't pretend to understand Hollywood. Weirdly, both Caan and Cox were mentioned in NBC's press release about the renewal. Don't they coordinate these things?

The good news: Breakout star Josh Duhamel is sticking around for now. And longtime fans, take note: TV Guide's Michael Ausiello reports that former "Las Vegas" star Marsha Thomason will turn up on "Lost" later this season.

Katie Holmes Is Feeling Romantic

Katie Holmes in on a roll. Fresh off last week's Cocktail on Broadway news, the star has now jumped on board an indie film. Holmes is joining the comedy, The Romantics, taking over a role from Liv Tyler. (No reason has been given for Tyler's departure.)

Romantics follows a group of college friends who come together one night for a wedding. Holmes will be playing the maid of honor to the bride (Anna Paquin), and both women have a long history with the groom (Josh Duhamel). Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, and Adam Brody round out the cast.

The storyline sounds cute, even if it's not the most original concept - a few eighties Brat Pack movies come to mind. I'm also interested in tracking this one because Holmes is making her debut as an executive producer. I'm glad to see her taking on more of a business role in Hollywood for a change, instead of letting Tom have all the clout.
