Mad Men: This Week's 5 Maddest Moments

Peggy asks Don in this week's episode of Mad Men, eyes shining with tears, "What if this is my time?" and I thought, man, Elisabeth Moss, this could be your time.

Indeed, the episode belongs to not just Peggy, but also to the other female force of the show: Betty Draper. "The Fog" of the episode's title is the drug-induced indignity of '60s childbirth Betty has to endure, along with her mismanaged grief over her father's death.

But that's just the beginning of the madness. To see what I thought were the best moments from this week's episode (spoilers ahead!), just read more.

The entire 1960s birthing experience. God, poor Betty, I thought, throughout her hospital stay (check out what Lil had to say about the traumatic scene). Oh, and also: so glad I don't have to give birth in the '60s. The fun stuff just piled up on Betty, starting with her isolation: the scary drugs that brought on the "twilight sleep" of creepy hallucinations, the enema (yick!), her sad struggle with the nurse in the delivery room.
The blood motif: First, there's the weird splice of Sally's blood-covered face during the parent-teacher meeting, then Betty's disturbing dream that features her father mopping up blood and her mother wiping the blood off of a suited African-American man (most likely Medgar Evers).
Pete and Peggy reunited: But it didn't feel so good. The Pete/Peggy storyline is one I've been super eager to get back into after last season's emotional confession from Peggy that she'd given up Pete's baby for adoption. Unfortunately, it's not the reunion I was hoping for - Duck's surprise lunch to woo them to his agency is a total misstep. Still, hearing him acknowledge P&P's "secret relationship" is somehow gratifying.
Integration at Sterling Cooper: Pete Campbell becomes the unwitting face of integration when he proposes a blended race strategy for Admiral televisions. His conversation with Hollis, reprimand from the partners for his bold suggestion, and Betty's aforementioned hallucination all indicate the coming storm of racial issues.
Peggy and Don's office chat: When Peggy tells Don, "I look at you and think, I want what he has," shortly after fingering a baby's slipper, we know she's not just talking about his salary and status. We've always known that Don doesn't appreciate all he has, but his hollow answer to Peggy's proclamation that he has everything, "I suppose that's probably true," cements it.

It was a heavy time-period episode, with the mention of integration, equal pay for women, and the archaic delivery room methods, but the character evolutions continue to crackle. What parts of the episode got to you the most?

P.S. Dear Don Draper. Your interaction with the PYT of a teacher worries me. Please keep it in your pants.

Jon Hamm Is a High Roller

It's always a good morning when you wake up to Jon Hamm news! The dreamy Mad Men star is set to leave Madison Avenue for a bit to join the cast of Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. He'll join Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, and Abbie Cornish in a story that centers around a girl (played by Emily Browning) in a mental institution. Trapped there by her stepfather, she has five days to escape and avoid a lobotomy.

Details on Hamm's character are still under wraps, and all we know at this point is that he'll be named "High Roller." I have to admit I wasn't particularly interested in this project before, but I'll follow Jon Hamm pretty much anywhere. What about you - are you excited to see Jon shed Don Draper's suit again?

Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall Move to Ben Affleck's Town

Ben Affleck's next directorial venture, The Town, just got its female lead and a dashing FBI agent in one fell swoop. Recently seen as Vicky to Scarlett Johansson's Cristina in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Rebecca Hall has been cast as a bank teller at the center of this story about bank robbery and romance. Here's more on the film, which Affleck also helped adapt from a Chuck Hogan book:

Affleck is directing, and playing a bank robber who becomes smitten with the teller of a bank he held up. She makes him want to go straight, but she is also the FBI's golden ticket to catching Boston's most wanted bank robber.

Hamm plays the FBI agent who also becomes infatuated with the bank employee, played by Hall.

Like another Affleck-directed movie, Gone Baby Gone, this one will be filmed in Boston. All I know is I certainly wouldn't mind being in the middle of a love triangle with Jon Hamm and Ben Affleck.

Mad Men: Why Is Don Draper Drowning?

How do you advertise a show about advertising? That's what the folks at Mad Men are taking on as their campaign for season three kicks off this week. Yes, we're still waiting for new footage from the season, but for now, this new poster - and the story behind it - can serve as our hints for what's to come when the show returns Aug. 16.

Yes, that's Jon Hamm as Don Draper, sitting in his office in several inches of water. And it's no special effect: as revealed in the video after the jump, it's a whole set filled with actual water - which at one point reached up to Hamm's neck.

The theme of this season is meant to be change, and this poster image is the one that beat out a pile of other high-concept ideas (Don Draper on an ice floe? Don Draper getting sucked into a whirling black hole?). That said, the image - and the show's new tagline, "The World's Gone Mad" - don't reveal a whole lot of details about the new season. But they sure do give us a good jumping-off point for speculation.

TV Tonight: Great Guest Stars on NBC

Having a new episode of The Office plus a new 30 Rock is enough to make me happy most Thursdays, but tonight's episodes have some special appeal. On 30 Rock, Jon Hamm is back as Liz's neighbor and incredibly understanding date, Drew, while on The Office, Idris Elba starts his six-episode run as a new boss at Dunder Mifflin going toe-to-toe with Michael Scott.

I'm excited to see a comedic side to Elba, who's best known as Stringer Bell on The Wire. His character, Charles Minor, sounds like he's going to be a tough rival for Michael, at least based on this radio interview with Elba from earlier this month. It sounds like he's been having a blast with all the improvising on set, and frankly, I think The Office could use a little shake-up as the season draws to a close.

Meanwhile, what have Drew and Liz Lemon been up to since last we saw them? Apparently something that involves tennis and possibly a motorcycle, as seen in the promo below. Which guest star are you most psyched to see? To watch the video, just read more.

First Look: Jon Hamm on 30 Rock

It seems like a match made in heaven: The year's most celebrated comedic TV actress and one of the most lauded dramatic actors who's also surprisingly funny, joining up for an episode of 30 Rock. I've been eagerly awaiting any information about Jon Hamm's guest appearance on the show, and now I've got good news: The first video clip of Hamm's appearance has arrived.

Hamm will be around for at least three episodes playing Dr. Baird, Liz's neighbor who just happens to be, oh, you know, kind of the perfect man. I mean, he likes pie and baking, and he looks like Jon Hamm. What could be better?

The clip is cute - complete with a well-timed "I want to go to there" - but I'm also a big fan of their video interviews, where they talk about how the pairing came to be. Hamm gets a little verklempt talking about Fey's good looks about halfway through this interview clip, while Fey calls Hamm "the handsomest living human at the moment." Aww!
