Look, It's a Giant Jar of La Mer!

No, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you - that actually is an enormous tribute to Crème de La Mer. It's part of filmmaker John Waters's solo show, Rush, currently showing at Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco. Waters, who uses La Mer, created the three-foot-high sculpture out of Styrofoam, latex, urethane, and plaster. And how much would this jar cost if it were filled with the pricey Crème itself? A whopping $880,000 - which makes the $130 one ounce jar seem like a bargain in comparison.

Posey + Waters + Knoxville = Crazy/Weird Movie

An indie/cult classic in the making, perhaps?
I'm so excited that Parker Posey is continuing to get roles and that John Waters (the mastermind behind the original Hairspray, along with Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom and others) is still hard at work creating bizarre indie films. And Johnny Knoxville is. . . also in this news item. The three are teaming up for Waters' next project, a Christmas film titled Fruitcake.

Mmm. . . Delicious fruitcake.
According to Hollywood Reporter, "The plot is officially under wraps but is said to center on the title character, a boy named after his favorite dessert. He runs away from home during the holidays after he and his parents are caught shoplifting meat, then meets up with a runaway girl raised by two gay men and searching for her birth mother."

Shoplifting meat?
Huh, for a plot that is "officially under wraps," that's a pretty solid plot description. Elsewhere I've seen the movie described as a "children's film," so I'll be extremely curious to see exactly how this Fruitcake comes out.

Movie Preview: Hairspray

Surely you're aware that Hairspray opens nationwide this Friday, that it was directed by Adam Shankman and stars Nikki Blonsky (both of whom I interviewed!), and that it features John Travolta wearing women's clothing and heavyset prosthetics. So, yeah, there's a lot going on with this movie. Based more on the stage musical than on John Waters' original 1988 film, this summer's Hairspray retains the same storyline: During the racially charged 1960s, the lovable Tracy Turnblad (Blonsky) takes Baltimore by storm when she not only makes it onto the local teen dance show, The Corny Collins Show, but strives to integrate the show as well. The movie also stars Queen Latifah, Allison Janney, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and the adorable Zac Efron. Our Countdown to Valentine's Day continues with ideas about romance from one of the most twisted guys around. Director of such cult classics as "Pink Flamingos" and "Female Trouble," John Waters also happens to be a romantic in his own special way. Here he is describing his idea of the perfect date in Bust magazine:

"I always thought a glamorous date would be robbing a 7-Eleven with somebody...I wouldn't do that, but I love the idea of doing it and then running and then, like, having a couple drinks and counting the money and having sex. That would be a fun night."

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I'll sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

The Devil Wears Prada
There's very little about this movie that's deep, but then again, that's precisely the point. This skewering of the cutthroat fashion-mag industry features a frighteningly good performance by Meryl Streep, lots of quotable one-liners ("I'm just one stomach flu away from my ideal weight."), and plenty of fashion eye candy.

Tallageda Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Will Ferrell's turn as racecar driver Ricky Bobby is inconsistent at best, but in its scattered moments of brilliance, this movie is a silly yet sharp parody of the corporate-sponsored culture of NASCAR. It tells the story of Bobby and his buddy, Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), as they face a French Formula 1 driver played by Sacha Baron Cohen of Borat fame. The interplay between Ferrell and Reilly alone makes this movie worth watching.

The world may be filthy, and John Waters is doing his part to keep it that way. He proves that in this documentary, directed by Jeff Garlin of "Curb Your Enthusiasm." The film chronicles two nights of the edgy and often hilarious one-man comedy show staged by the notorious filmmaker behind Hairspray and other cult favorites.

Cauliflower Gratin

Looking for an elegant yet simple way to serve cauliflower? Look no further than Fresh Tart's gluten-free version of cauliflower gratin.

Perhaps it's cliche that I read MFK Fisher's The Gastronomical Me and wanted to immerse myself in the world of food, but that's OK. Who wouldn't want to do exactly that after reading that sexy, scrumptious book? My goodness that woman could write, my mouth waters (and my heart swoons) just thinking about it.

There's one passage in particular that has had me making simple cauliflower gratins for years. I purposely don't look back at the specifics, I just count on how incredible she made cauliflower roasted with cream and Gruyere sound, swiped through with crusty bread and enjoyed with cold wine.

Lord.

So here's my version, so simple, so completely gluten-free, so much better than the pasta dish I served to Nathan and John tonight (in my opinion). I threw in some arugula leaves this evening because I had them, but you wouldn't need to include them.

The Dictator: Ruled by Tasteless but Funny Jokes

Full disclosure: I laughed out loud many times during The Dictator, knowing full well that I should have been offended instead. But what you see is what you get when it comes to Sacha Baron Cohen, and after movies like Bruno and Borat, you already know whether you'll be able to find humor in film about a horrifyingly ignorant world leader who's as naive, racist, and prejudiced as they come.

I know that sounds hard to swallow, but there is a big difference between The Dictator and Cohen's previous work: this time, it doesn't even feel remotely real. Whereas Borat and Bruno are made to taunt and embarrass what appear to be unsuspecting, everyday people, there's no mistaking The Dictator for what it is: a total farce that comes complete with actors you've seen before. It may sound obvious, but having Cohen's Aladeen interact with the likes of Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, and John C. Reilly makes the whole story easier to digest - and much easier to laugh at in spite of yourself.

To see what else I enjoyed about The Dictator, just

At the core, The Dictator is really a fish-out-of water comedy, just taken to staggeringly inappropriate levels. Aladeen has ruled his North African country, Wadiya, since he was a small child, and in many ways, he's never grown up. While he's busy ordering execution for anyone that rubs him the wrong way (including the engineer that couldn't make his nuclear weapon pointy enough), his uncle Tamir (Kingsley) is the one that's really making the decisions about how the country should be run. Predictably, Tamir turns on Aladeen and seizes power during a trip to NYC, leaving Aladeen lost, penniless, and unrecognizable on the streets of the Big Apple.

The Dictator then turns into a bizarre romantic comedy, as Aladeen befriends a crunchy protester named Chloe (Anna Faris), who he initially mistakes for a boy. Chloe gives Aladeen his first job in her organic whole foods store, which opens a Pandora's box of jokes about the irony of a world leader wearing a hairnet. Meanwhile, Aladeen hatches a plan to bring down his uncle, and somewhere along the way, you start rooting for the same guy that suggests aborting a baby because it's not a boy.

I'm not saying that The Dictator is sophisticated by any means, or even groundbreaking as a comedy. Cohen spares us no expense of crude humor that pushes the envelope (and literally takes us inside a woman's birth canal), and if you're not a fan for Cohen's brand of humor, you'll probably walk out of the theater before you even get there. But if you've ever found his antics to be funny before, chances are you will again - even if you're slightly embarrassed to admit it when the credits roll.
