Jon Hamm and His Mad Men Hit the Set in Style

Jon Hamm wasn't the only small screen star wearing a suit for the Mad Men cameras in LA yesterday. He was joined by John Slattery, Vincent Kartheiser, and Rich Sommer for filming after the costars returned from their Thanksgiving break. The guys celebrated the beginning of the holiday season, but the cast already had a big highlight back in September when the series was honored with the Emmy for best drama. The leading men partied together post-win, though they were missing their leading lady, January Jones, who had just given birth to baby Xander. She's since been spotted on set and even brought her young son along to meet the cast. Season five doesn't return to AMC until next year, but if you have a fanatic in your life, there are lots of Mad Men gift ideas that would be great to help ease the wait.

Jon Hamm joined his Mad Men costars Kiernan Shipka and Elisabeth Moss for a TV academy screening hosted by AMC in LA last night. John Slattery was on hand along with the show's creator, Matthew Weiner, who revealed that he already has an idea of how Mad Men will ultimately end despite their having a contract for three more seasons. Absent from the event were leading ladies Christina Hendricks and Allure cover girl and X-Men: First Class star January Jones. Jon made it to the stage following a trip to Cannes, where he partied with longtime girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt at the Paradis charity bash during the city's film festival. Jon also has been celebrating the success of his comedy Bridesmaids, which landed in second place at the box office on its opening weekend.

Kristen Schaal isn't the first name that comes to mind when I think of actresses who could play the President, and the actress seems perfectly misplaced in the role in The National's new video for "Conversation 16." She plays it like a bored child who somehow got roped into the job, while John Slattery looks on lovingly as one of her Secret Service agents. I'm still a sucker for a music video starring celebs, and the unlikely paring of the Mad Men star and quirky comedienne makes for an interesting story.

The Adjustment Bureau: Needs Fixing

Fate versus freewill. Religious theorists and philosophers have contemplated the idea for centuries, and this weekend The Adjustment Bureau tries to tackle the debate. What would you do if you found out your entire life were planned for you? And what if the plan wasn't what you wanted? The weighty subject matter should give you plenty to chew on, but The Adjustment Bureau isn't adept enough to handle the issue. Instead, we get a generic story.

Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick (the sci-fi writer also behind Blade Runner and Minority Report), The Adjustment Bureau stars Matt Damon as David Norris, a politician who crosses paths with a ballerina named Elise (Emily Blunt) in a men's bathroom. Instant sparks ignite, so when they bump into each other again on a bus, David is convinced that fate is intervening. But really, it's a mistake of chance - and it must be corrected. In come suited agents led by Richardson (John Slattery). They're men in charge of monitoring the world (the film suggests they're angels) to make sure everyone proceeds on the path predetermined for them. Since David has fallen off course, they must make sure he forgets about Elise for the sake of his political career. But unfortunately for them, David is quite the smitten schoolboy and isn't willing to let her go.

read more. As the chase begins, David bolts through Manhattan streets to steer clear of Richardson and his men. But how can you outrun or outsmart fate? Especially considering the head of the agency is - as implied in the film - God. There literally is nowhere for David to escape, so you start to wonder where exactly the film can go. Given the story's inventiveness, I kept waiting for a clever twist or unexpected outcome, but the ending is flat and dumbed down. The Adjustment Bureau wants to be a sci-fi film, thriller, and romance all in one, and by trying to do too much, it ultimately runs into problems. It glosses over many of the sci-fi plot components through quick verbal explanation, and the relationship between David and Elise feels rushed. When David first meets the agents, he doesn't seem nearly as concerned with the bizarre group as he is with holding onto Elise's phone number. Not only is it realistic, but it's a little too cheesy. The agents themselves don't help matters; Slattery does the best he can with his role, as does Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) who plays David's personal watcher. But on the whole, they come across as campy and deliver the script's most cliched lines. Damon and Blunt are what ultimately make the film worth watching. Damon was born to play a politician with his charisma, and Blunt's sarcasm makes for fun banter. They have great chemistry, and when the script does allow their relationship to grow, it makes for some of the movie's most gratifying scenes. If only the rest of the film was just as satisfying.

Matt Makes His Adjustment Bureau Premiere a Valentine's Date Night With Luciana

Matt Damon had his wife Luciana on his arm last night for the NYC premiere of The Adjustment Bureau, which hits theaters early next month. He's been on the East Coast for the last few days doing press for the film during a break from shooting We Bought a Zoo in LA. It was an evening of work despite the Valentine's Day holiday, but Matt said at the junket on Saturday that he and Luciana don't need special occasions or big gestures. When asked what dramatic move he's made for her, Matt said, "You build your life around someone, that's pretty crazy. But it's more incrementally. There's no moment where I'm like Tom Cruise in Born on the Fourth of July running down the street in the rain . . . any minute I'm not working I go home. But we have a two week rule." They're among the many couples who are happy to show PDA any day of the year, though Matt's costar, Emily Blunt, was without her own spouse John Krasinski. She still was decked out for the screening, wearing a salmon-colored Elie Saab concoction. Stars Try to Swing the Gay Marriage Vote in New York

John Slattery may play Mad Men's overgrown spoiled brat, but in real life he's joining other famous New Yorkers to ensure gay marriage passes in next month's state elections.

Celebrities like Julianne Moore, Mayor Bloomberg, Moby, and Kenneth Cole have already recorded videos for New Yorkers for Marriage Equality, sponsored by the gay-rights organization Human Rights Campaign. John's video's not out yet - Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Mark Ruffalo, and Tom Colicchio are also coming soon - but I'm looking forward to Mr. Slattery's more serious side.

The videos are short and low-budget looking, so I do wonder how effective they can be. Each features one celebrity only, and they're not really creative or sophisticated enough to turn viral. Who's going to watch them besides people that already support gay marriage? Or is the point just to get them out to vote?

George, January, and the Modern Family Gang Move the Emmys Party to the Press Room

The action in LA moved last night from the stage at the Emmys on to the press room, where the big winners showed off their new gold. Humanitarian honoree George Clooney led the pack by speaking about Brad Pitt's equally good deeds, and Tom Hanks toasted his HBO miniseries The Pacific. Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, meanwhile, had dual wins for Breaking Bad. An excited Aaron gushed about the surprise, saying he lost his mind due to the shock. Nurse Jackie's Edie Falco, who was declared Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, still maintained that she's not even funny. The ensemble cast of Mad Men was led by January Jones, the adorable young actress Kiernan Shipka, Christina Hendricks, and Elisabeth Moss. Their series's creator, Matthew Weiner, said a few words and assured fans their show isn't going anywhere just yet.

Eric Stonestreet celebrated with the Modern Family gang and commented that it won't be weird on set after he picked up a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy nod over two of his costars. Claire Danes was solo on stage to gush about her win for Temple Grandin. The stars were soon off to make the afterparty rounds, so stay tuned to get the inside scoop from across Hollywood!
