We Need to Talk About Kevin Trailer: Tilda Swinton Raises a Not-So-Sweet Little Boy

Don't be fooled by the dulcet tones of Buddy Holly's "Every Day" in the We Need to Talk About Kevin trailer. It plays as Eva (Tilda Swinton) and Franklin (John C. Reilly) fall in love and have their first child, Kevin, but their life is less than idyllic. That "sweet little boy" that they conceive (played as an older teen by Ezra Miller) grows up to commit a heinous crime: he goes on a killing spree at his school. In the aftermath of Kevin's monstrous act, Eva is haunted by the memories of Kevin's behavior in flashbacks.

Swinton looks like she's turning in another amazing performance as tortured mother Eva, but it's Miller as the titular Kevin who really gets under your skin, even in the few minutes of the preview. As creepy as he is and as tragic as the film appears, I can't wait to see this. The movie comes out in limited release on Dec. 9, but you can watch the full trailer when you keep reading.

Carnage Trailer: Watch Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster Have It Out

Director Roman Polanski isn't really known for comedy, but the trailer for Carnage, based on a play of the same name, proves that he's not afraid to try it. Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz star as a couple whose son has gotten into a fight with another child at school, and they try to resolve the issue with the kid's parents, played by Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly. The parental mediation is what brings them together, but there's clearly a lot more at play here, particularly the relationship of each couple.

With three Oscar winners and one nominee making up the small cast, the movie definitely seems to be rife with top-notch performances - and laughs as well. See if you can suppress a giggle when the ever-composed Winslet drunkenly cusses out Foster or Waltz reveals his wife's awkward pet name. Sundance Snapshot: Cedar Rapids Gives Ed Helms Another Hangover

Ed Helms has been building a film career for himself thanks to an extra boost from last year's smash hit The Hangover, and he headlines Cedar Rapids, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Helms plays yet another good guy to the core, but like his most recent comedy, his character gets himself into quite a bit of trouble.

Who's behind it? Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl, Youth in Revolt) directed this comedy starring Ed Helms, Anne Heche, John C. Reilly, and Sigourney Weaver.
What's it about? Tim (Helms) is a sheltered insurance agent from Wisconsin who is content with his simple life that consists of taking care of clients and a weekly sexual encounter with his former elementary school teacher. When the top salesman at his agency suddenly dies, Tim is sent to an annual convention with fellow insurance hotshots from around the country. Not only are Tim's small-town sensibilities put to the test, but he's forced to embrace the reality that not everything (or everyone) are what they appear to be on the surface.

For my verdict, just

What did I think? I fully support the idea of Ed Helms as a leading man, but the script just tries too hard to make Tim push the envelope as he experiences the world outside of his home town for the first time. There are plenty of laughs as the boys' club between Tim and his new friends Dean (John C. Reilly) and Ronald (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) develops, but sometimes Ed's first-time experiences - which run the gamut from a friendship with a prostitute to a flirtation with a married woman (Anne Heche) - feel like a watered down version of The Hangover. Cedar Rapids still has some laugh-out-loud moments, but it could have been even better if the actors were able to become more than caricatures.

Cedar Rapids Trailer: Ed Helms, Party Animal

It's The Office meets The Hangover in this trailer for Cedar Rapids, a new comedy starring the man who appears in both: Ed Helms. Helms plays Tim Lippe, a small town insurance agent who ventures to the big city - the "big city" being Cedar Rapids, IA - for a work convention. Tim soon learns that he's in way over his head as a few convention regulars (John C. Reilly and Anne Heche) teach him the ropes (translation: they get him hammered). Before you know it, buttoned-up Tim is befriending prostitutes and raising hell.

Helms hasn't really carried a film by himself before, but this looks like a promising effort: funny with a tinge of darker humor to it. Of course, it helps when you have Reilly's over-the-top character to bring out the hilarity in Helms's more straight man persona. Cedar Rapids will show at the Sundance Film Festival next month, so stay tuned for more about the movie. But until then, check out the trailer after the jump

Sundance Snapshot: Cyrus

The Sundance Film Festival comes to a close this weekend, but I've still got a few more movie goodies to keep you all informed. If you haven't already, check out my Sundance Snapshots covering movies from the likes of Josh Radnor to Ben Affleck to Ryan Gosling. For now, let's move on with the Duplass Brothers' Cyrus.

Who's behind it? The film is written and directed by the Duplass brothers, Jay and Mark, who are no strangers to Sundance at this point. John C. Reilly, Catherine Keener, Marisa Tomei, and Jonah Hill make up the cast.
What's it about? Reilly stars as John, a regular Joe (and self-proclaimed "Shrek") who's been a bit lost since his wife (Keener) left him seven years ago. He's skeptical about finding love again until he meets Molly (Tomei) at a party and forms an instant connection with her. Everything is going smoothly between the two until John meets Molly's 21-year-old son, Cyrus (Hill). Feeling very protective of his single mother, it isn't long before Cyrus starts sabotaging Molly's relationship with John. Check out the trailer right here.

What did I think? With a cast like this one, it's impossible not to find solid performances - Reilly and Hill in particular play out their contention with perfect comedic timing. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments, both classic and unconventional: John has a classic drunken dance party scene, but Cyrus's somewhat inappropriate relationship with Molly also provokes plenty of laughs. The biggest surprise is that the movie actually has a beating heart at its epicenter; despite Hill's run-ins with Reilly or his slightly Oedipal feelings towards his mother, his actions only teeter on the brink of being creepy. The delicate balance between strange and funny keep the movie on track, and it all comes together as a well-made little movie.

Movie Preview: John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill in Cyrus

I'm hoping to check out Cyrus while I'm here at Sundance, but for those of you not in snowy Park City, UT, here is its new trailer. John C. Reilly stars as a lovable dope who lands a woman way out of his league: Marisa Tomei. Everything is going great in their relationship - until he meets her grown son, Cyrus, played by Jonah Hill.

I wasn't sure I'd buy Hill as the youthful Tomei's son, but in the trailer, he seems younger than his previous characters, and is a surprisingly good fit for the film, which is not straightforward comedy. There's as much drama to the relationships as there are laughs (Reilly and Hill obviously get into a fistfight and verbal spars), and Reilly has always been an actor who can transition seamlessly from comedy to drama. Also, Catherine Keener makes a welcome appearance as Reilly's ex. Bottom line: I love this cast. Also, you should know that it's directed and written by the Duplass Brothers, who made Puffy Chair and Baghead, other Sundance splashes, and up next will be working with Jason Reitman.

Michael, Drew, and Justin Peacefully Celebrate Youth in Revolt

Michael Cera and Portia Doubleday were the center of attention last night at a premiere and afterparty for their film Youth in Revolt in LA. Their costar Justin Long had the support of girlfriend Drew Barrymore after their romantic afternoon of grocery shopping together, though she also had a minute to catch up with Michael's Arrested Development pal Alia Shawkat. Michael has had a busy few weeks of promoting their film with a screening in NYC and a recent chat with Buzz - check out what he and Portia had to say about adapting the well-regarded book for the big screen.

Cirque du Freak: An Unnecessary Addition to Vampire Entertainment

With Halloween just around the corner, October is the perfect time for movie studios to unleash their creepiest films, since we're all in the mood for a good scare. Combine with that the insatiable desire for vampire entertainment, and you've got Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant; a tween fantasy movie that plays out like R.L. Stein's Goosebumps novels on the big screen - but not nearly as scary.

Based on the book series by Darren Shan, Cirque du Freak is the story of Darren (Chris Massoglia), your typical 16-year-old boy trying to quell his high school boredom. Dubbed "Mr. Perfect" by his mischievous best friend Steve, Darren follows the rules, has plenty of friends, and does whatever his parents tell him to do - that is, unless Steve can convince him otherwise. The boys pick up a flyer for the Cirque du Freak and decide to check it out.

That's just the beginning though, so to see what I thought of the film, just

Things go awry when Darren finds himself tangled up in the world behind the Cirque, particularly that of Larten Crepsley, a crotchety vampire who couldn't be bothered with a teenager. When Darren gets himself into a sticky situation, the only way he can bail himself out is by selling his soul to Crepsley, becoming his half-vampire assistant.

If you thought sorting out all the vampire lore in Twilight and True Blood was confusing, get ready for the most convoluted yet. In this story, a war is brewing between two breeds: the Vampanese represent the blood-suckers that are all for killing their prey, while the run-of-the mill vamps prefer to sedate, feed, and then letting their victims return to regular life. As a half-vampire who's reluctant to lose what little human qualities he has left, Darren obviously joins Larten Crepsley's team, while his best friend Steve joins the evil Vampanese.

As for the actual Cirque du Freak, the group of misfits and outcasts are more X-Men and less Carnivale. The crew includes unusual children who were abandoned by their parents (like "Snake Boy" and "Monkey Girl"), along with a few other vaudeville acts like the Bearded Lady (Salma Hayek) and a woman who can regenerate her limbs (Jane Krakowski). Some are friendly, others are surly, but the cirque in itself is more campy than scary; little hideout is basically an island of misfit toys.

The film isn't boring, but it's not exactly packed with pizazz either. Director Paul Weitz was sure to stay on the safer side of the movie's PG-13 rating, rarely pushing the envelope on what could have been a much creepier film. John C. Reilly is always reliable for a good performance, and he has some great comedic timing as the voice of brutal honesty to Darren's naivete. Massoglia gives decent performance for a newbie, and even reminded me of a young Emile Hirsch at times. That said, the movie is also packed with confusing subplots and some truly corny dialogue that evoked collective groans from the audience.

If you're looking for a fun movie to get you into the Halloween spirit, this might do the trick. Just make sure you're in a tween state of mind.

Holmes, Kline, Reilly and Dano Set to Star in The Extra Man

The story of a male escort is one that producer Springer Berman believes will resonate with many folks during these tough economic times. Jonathan Ames's novel The Extra Man will be adapted for the big screen with a few big names attached to star: Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes and John C. Reilly. Here's more on the project:

Kline plays a failed playwright who works as an escort for rich widows on the Upper East Side. He develops a mentor-student relationship with a troubled aspiring playwright (Dano).

"This is a film for our times, these hilarious characters living on the edge of enormous wealth, scrapping for small pieces of the pie," [producer Springer] Bregman said. "I suspect a lot of people will be able to identify nowadays."

Hmm. . . I wonder what role Katie Holmes will play - hopefully not one of these rich widows because. . . yikes that's some age gap. Are you familiar with this book?
