San Francisco's Papercuts have been a hot ticket on the local music scene for a while now. But with its upcoming album, Can't Go Back, the band may really be headed for the big time. I particularly love the track "John Brown," which the Papercuts' label just posted online. Announcing the 2012 Oscar Nominations!

The 2012 Oscar nominations have been announced! Lots of award season regulars, like The Artist and The Descendants, got some love, but there were also a handful of surprises, like nominations for Nick Nolte, Gary Oldman, and Terrence Malick. Bridesmaids also scored big, with noms for best original screenplay and best supporting actress for Melissa McCarthy.

The Academy chose nine films for best picture, with lots of familiar titles in there, plus a couple that had early awards buzz but haven't necessarily had consistent attention, like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Tree of Life. The films that racked up the most nominations were Hugo with 11 and The Artist with 10.

Thai Omelet in Coconut Curry Broth

Inspired by a trip to a local farmers market, Fresh Tart whips up a quick version of a food-stand favorite: the coconut curry Thai omelet.

My son Nathan and I spent our summer Sundays eating our way through Kingfield Farmers Market. We did it last summer too and got in such a fun groove of eating together, visiting with friends, and stocking up on all of our favorite treats for the week.

It's worth noting that it was a much less expensive endeavor last year, when Nathan was around my height and was satisfied with a Chef Shack hot dog. Uh, not this year, not at 6'4" and counting, when he still ate a Chef Shack hot dog, but added their soft-shell crab sandwich, mini-donuts, and Arnie Palmer; Gai Gai Thai curry; Cafe Palmira iced coffee; Foxy Falafel curry falafel with a load of perfect pickles, extra hummus to go; Sun Street Bakery turnovers and sourdough loaf; and Bogart Loves maple-bacon donuts.

I scored plenty of bites, of course, and a good portion of it all we brought home to share with John...but I'm telling you, Sunday became a day for feasting.

So damn cool.

One of my favorites toward the end of the season was Gai Gai's Thai omelet served in a curry broth. On a chilly morning, perhaps after being out too late the night before, that crispy omelet in creamy coconut broth tasted spicy-sublime.

Bravo's just released the list of contestants for season nine of Top Chef, which premieres Nov. 2, and the network's switching things up a bit. Instead of one series location, this season will be shot between three cities, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio, and there's a list of 29 hopefuls, which will be whittled down to 16 real cheftestants.

J. Edgar Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio Rocks the Historical Boat

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to playing larger-than-life historical figures, but it feels like he's never thrown himself more into a real-life character in the trailer for J. Edgar. It could be director Clint Eastwood's influence, the magnitude of the man he's playing, or possibly it's the slightly over-the-top accent DiCaprio uses. J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the FBI, a proponent of using fingerprints to identify people, and a controversial figure whose paranoid tactics almost got him dismissed from his job by the three presidents he served under, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

DiCaprio plays Hoover over the course of a couple decades, and after he shows up with a couple of minor changes, like brown contacts, he gets a full physical transformation to portray him as an older man, aging makeup and all. Aside the from the vaguely distracting accent, it looks like DiCaprio turns in a solid performance in the biopic. And with Eastwood attached, it's sure to attract some Oscar buzz. Lela Rose Spring 2012

In tribute of 9/11, Lela Rose played John Lennon's "Imagine" to a crowd that, at times, even sang along. It was a good start to a show that kicked off with a hopeful and happy message. While her inspiration was the "neon graveyard," namely the unrestored and broken signs seen in Las Vegas and Coney Island, her collection was far from decrepit. Instead, muted neon hues, washed-out voile, and chipped-effect embroidery - using Guipure light bulb lace - were crafted into whimsical polka-dot dresses and colorblocked sheaths and separates. A couple of lightly quilted dresses that looked like a broken glass mosaic were also reminiscent of a carnival funhouse. For accessories, the designer punctuated the carnival theme via printed wedge sandals and cap-toe pumps from her Lela Rose for Payless collection.
