Tim Burton, Johnny Depp Reportedy Team Up for Dark Shadows Movie

Rumor has it today that we'll be getting more spooky, dark delight from the brilliantly talented duo Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Depp is reportedly producing and possibly starring as Barnabas Collins in a film adaptation of the 1960s "daytime supernatural soap opera" Dark Shadows. Tim Burton is attached to direct and screenwriter John August (a frequent Burton collaborator) will be brought in to write the script.

So far, the basic IMDB description of the movie version is this: "A gothic-horror tale centering on the life of vampire Barnabas Collins and his run-ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts."

I can't wait to hear more about the plot and find out which role Helena Bonham Carter will play! I just love these guys.

Movie Preview: Ryan Reynolds in The Nines

If you're a Ryan Reynolds fan like I am, you may have been waiting for The Nines to come out ever since you first heard about its Sundance buzz back in January. On August 31, we'll get our chance to see the super-cute Reynolds starring opposite the ever-amazing Hope Davis as well as Elle Fanning and Melissa McCarthy (Sookie from "Gilmore Girls"!).

The Nines is an intriguing drama with existential themes. Reynolds, Davis and McCarthy each play three different characters in separate tales that come together somehow in the end. First-time director John August is known mostly for writing screenplays like Big Fish, Charlie's Angels (both movies) and Go, but the movie received some healthy reviews from Sundance. According to Variety, for example, "There's more than enough intelligence, intrigue and performance dazzle to make this an adventuresome gizmo for grownups - albeit one whose complexity presents marketing challenges." Captain Marvel Writer: Gyllenhaal Rumors Are False

The rumor mill has been working overtime spreading the "news" that Jake Gyllenhaal will play superhero Captain Marvel in the upcoming film Shazam! As reported here on Thursday, source told the New York Daily News that director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to nab Gyllenhaal for the role.

However, screenwriter John August, who was hired to adapt the comic book for screen, is puzzled by this rumor, seeing as there isn't even a movie to cast yet! August writes on his blog:

After several months of meetings, casting has come up exactly zero times. There’s no casting list... There’s no start date, no release date, no movie whatsoever. There’s just a script to be written.

August explains his theory for how this false news came about, with what he calls "Sticky Celebrity Constant." For the details,

Established screenwriter hired to adapt obscure comic-book character. Yawn. Jake Gyllenhaal considering playing obscure comic-book character. Hooray!

Aww... he sounds kind of bitter, which is understandable I suppose. Pouring so much time and energy into something that will only garner interest if some cute young actor is involved must be disheartening. So, at least for now, August wants to make it known: Jake Gyllenhaal has NOT been cast as Captain Marvel. But he probably will be.

James Van Der Beek Has a Charitable Afternoon With Adorable Olivia

James Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly stepped out in LA yesterday to attend the John Varvatos Stuart House Benefit with their baby daughter Olivia. The couple, who married last August in Israel, welcomed Olivia shortly afterward in September. The family has been busy jetting around the world to support James's career, but they're also settling into their West Coast routine as a trio. He's been busy with a variety of projects like a cameo in a Ke$ha video, and will make a return to the small screen with Don't Trust the B**** in Apt. 23. The new role came as a birthday present for James, who rang in his 34th last Tuesday with a vacation in Palm Springs.

Becker-Eshaya's Second Fragrance Is Golden

Since perfumers Kristin Becker and John Eshaya both got their start in the fashion world, it's no wonder why their first eponymous fragrance launched as a light, citrusy-summer scent, and their second fragrance is called Golden Amber. Launched in August, it's a stronger and more wintry fragrance with notes of bergamot, jasmine, lychee, cashmere wood, sandalwood, patchouli, and musk. (Like I said, it's a heavier scent.) It's bottled in heavy faceted glass designed to resemble a luxurious diamond capped in gold.

It comes in a 2.03 oz eau de parfum ($75), in a smaller eau de parfum ($45), and as a scented candle ($40). I can't wait to check this out, especially because you won't smell it on everyone. I love that this is a little-known brand. (For example, it sells only at Bergdorf Goodman in all of New York.) So if you are in the market for a truly unique, sophisticated scent, this may be a great option for you.
