What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. In addition to my selections below you can download new albums from Pink and Snow Patrol. Here's what's on my list this week:

The making of a Legend: I like John Legend and I feel like he's the perfect pick for when I'm in a romantic and/or chillaxed mood. His new album sounds pretty fun. I'm enjoying a duet with Andre 3000 called "Green Light," a sweet song called "No Other Love" featuring Estelle with a nice rasta-beat beneath it, and "This Time" is pretty and different-sounding for Legend. It's good to hear him getting up from the piano and mixing it up a little. Oh, and "I Love, You Love" sounds like wedding mix material.

The Cure for your ears: For what it's worth, The Cure's new album is earning some high praise from music critics. The Guardian called the band's thirteenth studio album "admirably taut and vibrant" and Blender declares, "here's the new soundtrack to Saturday night." Fun! I'm enjoying the upbeat song, "The Only One" and "Underneath the Stars" is another good one.

So dramatic: Bloc Party's always had a flair for the dramatics as a band and you know what? I like it. I'm excited that their new album is out today and have had a good time checking out their new songs! So far my faves include the catchy "Signs," the spacey "Better Than Heaven," and the hard-driving "Halo."

Not just Beyonce's little sister anymore: I posted the video for Solange Knowles's single "I Decided" a while back and now the entire album is available. This new album blends classic Motown melodies with elements that are little more far-out and groovy. I've already purchased "Would've Been the One" and "Sandcastle Disco." It's only on slower tracks that the album gets weak - the funky tempos, not her voice, make this album shine.

A sparkling duet: Remember when I told you about that really cute duet called "You Don't Know Me" by Regina Spektor and Ben Folds that's from his upcoming album? Well, now it's available on iTunes and remains extremely cute! Hurry up and get it while it's hot!

Oldie but a goodie: The members of The Verve have not made an album together for almost a decade, so it's pretty cool for fans that there is now a whole new album full of very Verve-ish songs. The track "Judas" is great and "Love Is Noise" is addictive and wonderful. A pretty great reunion album as far as I can tell!

Politically correct: As the campaign season truly kicks off this week with the Democratic National Convention in Denver, not only do we get to learn more about the candidates' positions but, apparently, we also get great new music. You may have caught John Legend's performance of "If You're Out There" last night, and it's available on iTunes as well. Check out his inspirational tune while reading Citizen and Liberty's coverage of the conventions!

Singer to Watch: Estelle

As British sensation Leona Lewis hurtles towards the USA, there's another singer from across the pond whom I'm really excited about: Estelle. Although she's definitely reminiscent of other R&B singers like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, Estelle's sound stands out as something entirely unique.

Her first album, The 18th Day, was a hit in the UK, and these days, she has all kinds of talent collaborating on her new album, Shine, including Wyclef Jean, will.i.am, Swizz Beats, Mark Ronson, John Legend and Kanye West. That's a pretty good list if you're looking to earn fans in America.

Her new album was supposed to come out in February, but that didn't happen - though hopefully the fact that her singles are being released now means it's coming soon. I love both of the songs - "American Boy" and "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)" - which feature Kanye and John Legend respectively. Tina Fey will host the first post-strike episode of Saturday Night Live

John Legend and Isaac Hayes have joined the cast of the comedy Soul Men, which includes Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, writes Billboard.
ComingSoon has news that Wes Craven's first horror project since 1994 will be 25/8, based on the 1972 George Romero film.
Benjamin Bratt will star in a new series for A&E about an interventionist, while Timothy Hutton will portray a modern-day Robin Hood in the TNT series Leverage; details on both are at The Futon Critic.
Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Jason Leigh will star together in the indie sex comedy titled Spread, reports Variety.
Aretha Franklin is not pleased with Beyonce after Beyonce's Grammy intro referred to Tina Turner, not Franklin, as "the queen," the Associated Press reports.
Zap2It writes that Joel Surnow, co-creator of 24, is leaving the show to pursue other projects.
According to Billboard, this summer's tour will be the last for The Police.
Fox is remaking a Japanese TV show in which people must fit into shapes like human Tetris pieces, according to Variety.

A 30-minute live acoustic set by John Legend - aboard a Delta flight - will be the prize of a Grammys sweepstakes, Billboard reports.
Sci Fi Wire is reporting that Jericho has shot two endings this time, just in case it's canceled again.
ComingSoon has news that Jennifer Hudson will join the cast of the drama Tyler Perry's the Family That Preys.
NBC is auctioning off items from its shows to benefit the United Way, including one of Pam Beesley's cardigans from The Office; details are at The Futon Critic.
Mark Wahlberg will star in an untitled drama about international drug dealer Jon Roberts, whose life was chronicled in the documentary Cocaine Cowboys, writes Variety.
Jerry Seinfeld has sent Seinfeld DVDs to New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning after a TV station in Green Bay pulled the show - Manning's favorite - off the air because his team is playing the rival Packers, the New York Post reports.
Nashville Star will air on NBC this summer, along with a second season of American Gladiators, Broadcasting & Cable reports.
Instead of another 100 movies list, AFI will present 10 top 10 lists for different movie genres this summer, writes Zap2it.

Announcing the 2009 Emmy Winners!

Well, the Emmys are over, and we have our full list of winners. Were you guys surprised by this year's picks? (Check out all my Emmy polls here.) I thought the show started out pretty unexpectedly when underdogs Kristin Chenoweth and Toni Collete took home trophies, and there were a few other surprises along the way. Towards the end, though, the big wins seemed pretty predictable with Mad Men for drama, 30 Rock for comedy - no surprises there.

I had a lot of favorite moments of the night - more on those later - but mainly, I just enjoyed seeing Neil Patrick Harris as host. I loved everything from his opening to Dr. Horrible, and most of you thought his opening number was pretty great, too.
