It was a sad day for the film community and fans of iconic '80s movies everywhere yesterday when esteemed director John Hughes passed away suddenly from a heart attack. The internet is a-buzz with loving retrospectives and discussions about favorite characters. I'm adding my own two cents with a roundup of favorite quotes from Hughes' movies. Of course, every one of these movies has a bunch of awesome quotes - I just narrowed it down as best I could and chose the ones that I like best. So here's to the man who introduced the term "neo-maxi zoom dweebie" into my vocabulary, may he rest in peace.

John Hughes, writer and director of many beloved movies, has passed away at the age of 59. He reportedly had a heart attack while taking a morning walk today in Manhattan.

Just hearing Hughes' name makes me feel nostalgic. When watching his movies it always strikes me that his stories, so often dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a teenager (and frequently touching on issues of social class, the friction between the haves and the have-nots) shaped a whole genre of teen dramedy. Where would we be today without The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles? Or what about Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, and the National Lampoon's Vacation movies? The world of film has benefited wonderfully from his contributions.

John Hughes, you will be missed.

Buzz In: Who Are the Meanest Teens to Ever Hit the Screen?

Lately there's been a glut of wholesome, good-natured teens (see Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, and Vanessa Hudgens's snuggly ode to sneakers). But this week's release of the 20th anniversary of the classic Heathers reminded me that onscreen teenagers can be really mean. Actually, they can be downright vicious.

The girl group in Heathers was so mean they were essentially psychopathic. And then there's the famous pack of mean teens that torments Lindsay Lohan in Tina Fey's Mean Girls. Rich girl Caroline Mulford in Sixteen Candles is incredibly cruel (well, until she spends an evening with the geeky Farmer Ted). And of course, they're not always girls: Ryan Phillippe's character in Cruel Intentions is about as scummy as it gets in terms of douchebag teen guys.

Buzz In: How Has John Hughes Influenced You?

John Hughes' work is so far-reaching, he is still making news today despite having quit directing in 1991. The L.A. Times recently ran a story in which some of the most popular directors and actors today point to movies like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club as movies that made an impact on them as artists.

A ton of Hughes nostalgia has been popping up online lately, like this interview with Jon Cryer EW dug up in which he stated:

John had a real need to believe in teenage icons and create teenage iconography - that's what he was doing with Breakfast Club. I think he was really tortured in his high school, and [movies] were a way of him psychologically coming to terms with his youth and sort of reordering it in his mind as a storyteller. I think kids will always latch on to people saying, "Your experience is important. What you're going through right now is not trivial. We care about it, and we're right there with ya."

Movie Preview: Drillbit Taylor

Somehow, this movie, written by Seth Rogen (you know, the guy who co-wrote Superbad) and starring Owen Wilson, has been completely off my radar, despite the trailer coming out a few months ago. Now there are only a couple of months until Drillbit Taylor hits theaters and I'm surprised there's not more promotion for it - especially with Judd Apatow listed as a producer. What's weirder is that John Hughes (yes, The Breakfast Club John Hughes) has a writing credit for this movie.

The goofy comedy focuses on a man named "Drillbit Taylor" (Wilson) who's hired as a bodyguard by high school nerds, even though he's not really much of a tough guy himself. I predict Taylor helps the boys realize their own self-worth and confidence, etc. and they defeat the school bullies all on their own, with a bunch of raunchy humor and sight gags sprinkled throughout.

Bad Idea of the Week: Ferris Bueller's Day Off 2

What's almost worse than making remakes of beloved '80s films? Making sequels to beloved '80s films! Especially when it's a sequel to a John Hughes movie that might be made 21 years after the first one and probably won't be directed by Hughes himself.

That's right, folks, apparently screenwriter Rick Rapier has written the script for Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off in which Bueller, now 40 years old, has turned his motto "Life Moves Pretty Fast" into a self-help motivational career with his buddy Cameron managing the thriving business.

Rapier provided TampaBay.com blog, StuckInThe80s, with a copy of the script which they deemed "a blast." The blog is now claiming that fans of the original would love a sequel.

The plot is this: "Despite his phenomenal success, Ferris is a bit distracted on his 40th birthday (which, considering his massive fame, is being watched on pay-per-view TV by millions of devoted fans). He decides to take the day off, sending Cameron, his business associates and family into a frenzy." Rapier reportedly wants all the original actors to come back to reprise their roles, and has included each of them in the sequel's story:

Ferris' sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) is married to the boy she met in the police station (Charlie Sheen).
No longer a school administrator, [Principal] Rooney is still stalking Ferris for revenge.
The economics teacher played by Ben Stein now is an airline gate representative.
Ferris' girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) is a Hollywood star going through a rough marriage.

But what is a John Hughes movie without John Hughes? As Cinematical points out, he's never once directed a movie he didn't write and it's hard to imagine he'd start now with Another Day Off.

Well, we've recast The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, so now it's time for the third of my favorite John Hughes movies: Sixteen Candles.

Sure, looking at this movie now there are some things that now don't seem quite right (Ted having sex with Caroline while she's passed out, say). But I still have a soft spot in my heart for this iconic '80s teenage romantic comedy.

The Results Are In: Recast The Breakfast Club

For last Wednesday's Recast challenge, I asked you guys to choose a whole new cast for the John Hughes classic, The Breakfast Club. This was by far the most wildly popular Recast challenge yet, and there were so many good ideas. I particularly loved PinkRabbit's pick for Frankie Muniz to play the geek role originated by Anthony Michael Hall, and I was pleasantly surprised by Honeysugar28 choosing Scarlett Johansson for the Molly Ringwald part.

But the best list overall came from Swwonder, who really nailed it with an ideal mix of young actors or actors who just look young. Here are her picks, complete with a "new" cast photo.
