It was a sad day for the film community and fans of iconic '80s movies everywhere yesterday when esteemed director John Hughes passed away suddenly from a heart attack. The internet is a-buzz with loving retrospectives and discussions about favorite characters. I'm adding my own two cents with a roundup of favorite quotes from Hughes' movies. Of course, every one of these movies has a bunch of awesome quotes - I just narrowed it down as best I could and chose the ones that I like best. So here's to the man who introduced the term "neo-maxi zoom dweebie" into my vocabulary, may he rest in peace.

Rest in Peace, John Hughes

John Hughes, writer and director of many beloved movies, has passed away at the age of 59. He reportedly had a heart attack while taking a morning walk today in Manhattan.

Just hearing Hughes' name makes me feel nostalgic. When watching his movies it always strikes me that his stories, so often dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a teenager (and frequently touching on issues of social class, the friction between the haves and the have-nots) shaped a whole genre of teen dramedy. Where would we be today without The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles? Or what about Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, and the National Lampoon's Vacation movies? The world of film has benefited wonderfully from his contributions.

John Hughes, you will be missed.

What are your favorite Hughes movies?

Buzz In: Who Are the Meanest Teens to Ever Hit the Screen?

Lately there's been a glut of wholesome, good-natured teens (see Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, and Vanessa Hudgens's snuggly ode to sneakers). But this week's release of the 20th anniversary of the classic Heathers reminded me that onscreen teenagers can be really mean. Actually, they can be downright vicious.

The girl group in Heathers was so mean they were essentially psychopathic. And then there's the famous pack of mean teens that torments Lindsay Lohan in Tina Fey's Mean Girls. Rich girl Caroline Mulford in Sixteen Candles is incredibly cruel (well, until she spends an evening with the geeky Farmer Ted). And of course, they're not always girls: Ryan Phillippe's character in Cruel Intentions is about as scummy as it gets in terms of douchebag teen guys.

Clear your mind of Disney stars and tell me about the most memorable nasty onscreen teens.

Buzz In: How Has John Hughes Influenced You?

John Hughes' work is so far-reaching, he is still making news today despite having quit directing in 1991. The L.A. Times recently ran a story in which some of the most popular directors and actors today point to movies like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club as movies that made an impact on them as artists.

A ton of Hughes nostalgia has been popping up online lately, like this interview with Jon Cryer EW dug up in which he stated:

John had a real need to believe in teenage icons and create teenage iconography - that's what he was doing with Breakfast Club. I think he was really tortured in his high school, and [movies] were a way of him psychologically coming to terms with his youth and sort of reordering it in his mind as a storyteller. I think kids will always latch on to people saying, "Your experience is important. What you're going through right now is not trivial. We care about it, and we're right there with ya."

My sentiments exactly. What about you? Has John Hughes' work influenced you? What mark, if any, do you think he's left on Hollywood's portrayal of teenagers? To see what folks like Judd Apatow, Kevin Smith and Courtney Love have said about the now-reclusive filmmaker, read more.

More from the L.A. Times:

Judd Apatow (whose new film, Drillbit Taylor, is based on an old story idea by Hughes): "John Hughes wrote some of the great outsider characters of all time. It's pretty ridiculous to hear people talk about the movies we've been doing, with outrageous humor and sweetness all combined, as if they were an original idea. I mean, it was all there first in John Hughes' films. Whether it's Freaks and Geeks or Superbad, the whole idea of having outsiders as the lead characters, that all started with Hughes."

Kevin Smith (whose film Dogma features Shermer, Illinois, a mythical town that only exists in Hughes' films): "He's our generation's J.D. Salinger. He touched a generation and then the dude checked out. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be doing what I do. Basically my stuff is just John Hughes films with four-letter words."

Courtney Love: "[The Breakfast Club was] the defining moment of the alternative generation."

Director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers): "It's the great thing about Hughes' films. He made them for himself, but when you watch them, you always feel that he made them especially for you."

Producer Scott Stuber: "He somehow knew we were all struggling with the same things. Whenever I watch a Hughes film now, I remember the euphoria of being 13 and falling in love with movies."

Source and Source

Movie Preview: Drillbit Taylor

Somehow, this movie, written by Seth Rogen (you know, the guy who co-wrote Superbad) and starring Owen Wilson, has been completely off my radar, despite the trailer coming out a few months ago. Now there are only a couple of months until Drillbit Taylor hits theaters and I'm surprised there's not more promotion for it - especially with Judd Apatow listed as a producer. What's weirder is that John Hughes (yes, The Breakfast Club John Hughes) has a writing credit for this movie.

The goofy comedy focuses on a man named "Drillbit Taylor" (Wilson) who's hired as a bodyguard by high school nerds, even though he's not really much of a tough guy himself. I predict Taylor helps the boys realize their own self-worth and confidence, etc. and they defeat the school bullies all on their own, with a bunch of raunchy humor and sight gags sprinkled throughout.

Drillbit Taylor opens March 21, so to check out the trailer, read more.

Buzz Gift Guide: '80s Babies

You have one in your family. You work next to one. Or perhaps you are one: A defiantly proud child of the '80s. A girl who just wants to have fun. A Casbah rocker. One who wangs chung. If you're familiar with these things, today's holiday gift guide is for you and your '80s babies friends.

If you and your friends spent so much time with the Tanner family that DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle were practically your sisters, check out the Full House Complete Series. The set comes with every episode from the show's eight-season run, but the real selling point is the package: a replica of the Tanners' San Francisco-style town house.

Nothing brings me back to those golden years quite like the music of the '80s. Of course, I knew the gal to ask for '80s music compilation gift ideas was WhiplashGirlchild, who suggested this extremely cool and comprehensive set, Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally).

Some of the most iconic movies of my youth are John Hughes' teen films, like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. For awesome box set collections of these and other beloved flicks, check out the Too Cool for School set and the Brat Pack collection.

What's almost worse than making remakes of beloved '80s films? Making sequels to beloved '80s films! Especially when it's a sequel to a John Hughes movie that might be made 21 years after the first one and probably won't be directed by Hughes himself.

That's right, folks, apparently screenwriter Rick Rapier has written the script for Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off in which Bueller, now 40 years old, has turned his motto "Life Moves Pretty Fast" into a self-help motivational career with his buddy Cameron managing the thriving business.

Rapier provided TampaBay.com blog, StuckInThe80s, with a copy of the script which they deemed "a blast." The blog is now claiming that fans of the original would love a sequel.

To check out the sequel's plot details and more, read more

The plot is this: "Despite his phenomenal success, Ferris is a bit distracted on his 40th birthday (which, considering his massive fame, is being watched on pay-per-view TV by millions of devoted fans). He decides to take the day off, sending Cameron, his business associates and family into a frenzy." Rapier reportedly wants all the original actors to come back to reprise their roles, and has included each of them in the sequel's story:

Ferris' sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) is married to the boy she met in the police station (Charlie Sheen).

No longer a school administrator, [Principal] Rooney is still stalking Ferris for revenge.

The economics teacher played by Ben Stein now is an airline gate representative.

Ferris' girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) is a Hollywood star going through a rough marriage.

But what is a John Hughes movie without John Hughes? As Cinematical points out, he's never once directed a movie he didn't write and it's hard to imagine he'd start now with Another Day Off.

What do you think? Would you like to see a sequel to Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

Source

Recast Sixteen Candles and Win a Prize!

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

Well, we've recast The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, so now it's time for the third of my favorite John Hughes movies: Sixteen Candles.

Sure, looking at this movie now there are some things that now don't seem quite right (Ted having sex with Caroline while she's passed out, say). But I still have a soft spot in my heart for this iconic '80s teenage romantic comedy.

So tell me: If you could recast this movie today, which actors would you pick for the lead roles?

Part of the charm of Sixteen Candles is the ensemble cast, so I've chosen 7 characters that I think are most central to recast.
Leave your entry in the comment section below, and I'll pick one winner to feature Tuesday, August 14, complete with a "new" cast photo. To see a list of characters to recast and a photo of the BuzzSugar t-shirt, read more

Characters to recast:
Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald)
Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling)
Long Duk Dong (Gedde Watanabe)
Ted, "The Geek" (Anthony Michael Hall)
Jim Baker (Samantha's father) (Paul Dooley)
Ginny Baker (Samantha's older sister) (Blanche Baker)
Caroline Mulford (Jake's girlfriend) (Haviland Morris)

The BuzzSugar t-shirt

The Results Are In: Recast The Breakfast Club

For last Wednesday's Recast challenge, I asked you guys to choose a whole new cast for the John Hughes classic, The Breakfast Club. This was by far the most wildly popular Recast challenge yet, and there were so many good ideas. I particularly loved PinkRabbit's pick for Frankie Muniz to play the geek role originated by Anthony Michael Hall, and I was pleasantly surprised by Honeysugar28 choosing Scarlett Johansson for the Molly Ringwald part.

But the best list overall came from Swwonder, who really nailed it with an ideal mix of young actors or actors who just look young. Here are her picks, complete with a "new" cast photo.

Claire Standish (The Princess) - Mandy Moore
Andy Clark (The Jock) - Chad Michael Murray
Brian Johnson (The Geek) - Adam Brody
John Bender (The Rebel) - James Franco
Allison Reynolds (The Basket Case) - Anna Paquin

Tune in tomorrow for another Recast challenge!
