John Adams writer/producer Kirk Ellis just came by the Emmy press room to talk about what happened when his acceptance speech got cut off in favor of a reality show award promo.
"As soon as I got up there and opened my mouth, they were already flashing the 'wrap it up'," he said. "I find it really interesting that we can have 30 minutes of the show devoted to reality show hosts, when the people who actually create the work don't get enough time to talk."

- Filmonic has a pretty awesome rundown of which actors would play the Simpsons characters in a live-action Simpsons movie. My favorites are Allison Janney as Mrs. Krabappel and Kevin Smith as Comic Book Guy.
- The Ausiello Report has the strangest news that a Prison Break character we thought was dead is alive after all. Huh?
- Cinematical claims the movie 21 proves that sometimes a film can be reviewed entirely from its trailer.
- Popwatch has a helpful — and very funny — video that will catch you up on Dancing With the Stars, just in case you didn't catch all 3.5 hours of it this week.
- TV Filter wonders why John Adams is the most boring character in HBO's John Adams.
- According to Stereogum, even Juliana Hatfield is addicted to watching The Hills (though she simultaneously hates it).
- Give Me My Remote is glad that a Battlestar Galactica alum is giving Joss Whedon's Dollhouse some sci fi cred.
- Thanks to You Ain't No Picasso for showing me that Andrew Bird has blogged for the New York Times!

- I'm getting excited for the HBO miniseries about John Adams based on the preview clips I've seen. Speaking of miniseries news, NBC recently announced that Mira Sorvino and Victor Garber will star in one about the Knights Templar. The network also scored some big names for its horror and suspense anthology series.
- I had a great time at the Noise Pop festival last weekend, going to see some of my favorite bands and discovering new acts.
- There were a lot of music divas in the news this week.

When I think of fascinating historical figures, John Adams isn't necessarily one who jumps out at me. But maybe that's because I just don't know enough about him yet. After all, as executive producer Tom Hanks says in the preview for HBO's upcoming John Adams miniseries, "If I had been told this at any time in my educational career, it would have blown my little skull."

I recently sat down with Hairspray director/choreographer Adam Shankman and the star of the show, Nikki Blonsky, to discuss their film adaptation of the Broadway musical (which was itself a stage adaptation of John Waters' original 1988 movie). You'll hear more of my thoughts on the movie next week, though for the purposes of this interview I'll tell you I think this movie promises to be a major summer hit. Being a fan of John Waters' original, I was wary of this version but it turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Surely you're aware that Hairspray opens nationwide this Friday, that it was directed by Adam Shankman and stars Nikki Blonsky (both of whom I interviewed!), and that it features John Travolta wearing women's clothing and heavyset prosthetics. So, yeah, there's a lot going on with this movie. Based more on the stage musical than on John Waters' original 1988 film, this summer's Hairspray retains the same storyline: During the racially charged 1960s, the lovable Tracy Turnblad (Blonsky) takes Baltimore by storm when she not only makes it onto the local teen dance show, The Corny Collins Show, but strives to integrate the show as well.
