Buzz In: Who Should Play Wonder Woman?

Not that a solid plan for a Wonder Woman movie has been set in motion yet (Joss Whedon was allegedly involved and then dropped out of the project, leaving people to wonder who else should direct it -any thoughts?), but people keep buzzing about who would play the strong, lovely superhero if a movie about her ever finally shapes up. Some have mentioned Jessica Biel and Megan Fox, while Moviefone's extensive list of possibilities goes so far as to include Britney Spears and Shannon Elizabeth as options (their list also includes some ladies I think come closer to true possibilities, like Kate Beckinsale).

The latest actress to toss her hat in the ring? Jennifer Love Hewitt, who apparently longs to be in an action film and recently said, "I want them to make the movie of Wonder Woman and I want to play Wonder Woman so bad, I think it'd be really fun."

The DC Comics Amazonian princess was originally created "as a distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to 'a world torn by the hatred of men.'" What present-day actress do you think could take on this character?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below, you can watch some very funny recorded improv comedy starring Amy Poehler when you rent The Upright Citizens Brigade: Asssscat!

The Kite Runner
If you enjoyed Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, you won't be disappointed by how closely the screen adaptation resembles the book in both plot and its ability to tear your feelings apart. I gave this warning in my review and will say it again: The Kite Runner is not for the faint of heart, and some of the most gut-wrenching scenes from the book are even harder to take visually.

That said, there is much to appreciate about this story, which follows two young boys growing up in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban come to power. The relationship between the two friends is beautifully explored, as tense political events unfold around them. When one of the boys stands mutely aside while his best friend is brutalized, the decision sets off a series of mostly agonizing events and haunts him the rest of his life. In the end, however, it's a tale of love and redemption. Special features include commentary from Khaled Hosseini and the filmmakers.

Party of Five: The Complete Third Season
Check out Matthew Fox's hair on that cover. Amazing. I know it's hard to get beyond Lost and Scream and The Ghost Whisperer, but once upon a time, these stars were on a little drama called Party of Five as a family of orphaned Salinger siblings who raise themselves (or is it . . . each other?).

Season Three was a turning point for most of the characters. Charlie's (Matthew Fox) girlfriend and family nanny gets caught plagiarizing a paper for her PhD, Kate (Jennifer Love Hewitt) reveals to boyfriend Bailey (Scott Wolf) that she wants to remain a virgin, Bailey turns into an alcoholic, and sister Julia (Neve Campbell) spends a lot of time dealing with her guilt after a friend's suicide. This is a great addition to your Party of Five collection and it's a fun journey back through the fashions and style of the '90s.

The Mist
Perhaps you missed the late November release of this spooky Stephen King film, since it's sometimes hard to get in the holiday spirit and see a scary movie at the same time. If that's the case, be sure to add The Mist to your queue this week, as it's pretty much everything one could want out of a scary movie.

The movie follows local townspeople trapped in a supermarket by a thick and deadly fog. While it's spooky to wonder what, exactly, in that mist is killing people, the really scary stuff comes from the way the group deals with the threat, bringing up all kinds of topics around End of Days. Marcia Gay Harden is particularly creepy as the town's religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody.

The special two-disc set includes commentary by writer/director Frank Darabont, deleted scenes, the behind the scenes webisodes, and the complete film in black and white.

Buzz In: Whose Life Should Not Be Made Into a Movie?

Some are arguing that the biopic is the new black in Hollywood these days, but this genre has been entertaining us for some time now. Sometimes they're a great way to honor a beloved figure - Frida comes to mind, as does Ray, and HBO's Peter Sellers biopic starring Geoffry Rush. But then there are those that just make us cringe with shame: anyone remember when Jennifer Love Hewitt played Audrey Hepburn in that made-for-TV movie?

I kind of think no one should play Audrey Hepburn because it seems difficult to do her justice. I feel similarly about Kurt Cobain, as well as Bob Marley, whose biography has just been optioned by the Weinstein Company.

Can any actor really do justice to the larger-than-life Marley? Even if there is someone out there who could realistically pull that off, what if the filmmakers still manage to mess things up?

I know many people feel passionately about their favorite books not being "ruined" by Hollywood, so what about people? Are there some lives that Hollywood should refrain from dramatizing? Whose life story do you think should remain in our memories and maybe history books?

The Movie Alec Baldwin Really Doesn't Want You to See

You know I love Alec Baldwin, but even I can admit the poor guy hasn't had the best year. First, there was that very public, rage-filled voicemail for his daughter; now, on Friday the 13th - of course - his directorial debut is hitting the theaters, after more than six years of sitting dormant and Baldwin's insistence that his name be removed as director and producer.

Baldwin can pretend that someone named Harry Kirkpatrick directed the movie - which was once known as The Devil and Daniel Webster and has since been renamed Shortcut to Happiness. But he can't deny he's acting in it. Which is unfortunate, because it's being called "one of the biggest train wrecks of all time."

Despite a relatively star-studded cast (at least by 2001 standards) of Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins, Kim Cattrall and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the trailer does look pretty awful. It's standard bad-movie fare (trite dialogue, foregone conclusions galore) until about two-thirds of the way through, when the trial scene starts. Granted, I've never seen the original The Devil and Daniel Webster, and I don't know if there's a trial scene, but I'm sure it doesn't feature Jennifer Love Hewitt as the devil, screeching about whether Baldwin's character's soul is worth saving.

The only good news for my Alec is the movie's extremely limited release: It's only showing in Las Vegas, Rochester, NY, Fort Myers, Columbus, Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.
