ABC to Make Maid in Manhattan TV Series

Apparently, this is really going to happen: ABC plans to make a TV series based on the Jennifer Lopez movie Maid in Manhattan. The Hollywood Reporter has more details:

The hourlong dramedy, which is getting a put pilot commitment, is not a remake of the hit feature. . .The lead in the TV version will still be a young Latina from the Bronx working at a Manhattan hotel who tries to make it in the world. But the series will focus mostly on her relationships with co-workers.

Writer Chad Hodge apparently connected with the idea for the show, saying, "I imagine being a writer in Hollywood is often very similar to being a maid in Manhattan." Somehow. . . I doubt that.

Jennifer Lopez has been "very involved, providing 'a fountain of ideas,' Hodge said. 'She will be very integral in the pilot and series.'" The network figures this series will be a good one to pair up with Ugly Betty because, as the article puts it, Betty "also centers on a hardworking young Latina in New York with big dreams."

I'm all for the hardworking young Latina-driven TV shows, but Maid in Manhattan? Seriously? Huh.

Jennifer Lopez Returns to the Rom-Com Genre

New mom-of-twins Jennifer Lopez is heading back to work in front of the cameras soon for yet another romantic comedy. Titled The Governess, the movie "centers on a professional thief who, in order to pull off a major bank heist, poses as a nanny to the three unruly children of a wealthy widower. When she starts to fall for the kids and their father, she must decide if she can give up her past for a chance to start over."

I wonder. . . will she be able to give up her past for the wealth widower and the three scamps she's come to love?!

Tell me: Do you think Jennifer Lopez is good at the romantic comedy thing? Do you like her performances in Maid in Manhattan and The Wedding Planner? Might this be a cute film?

Would You Watch a Jennifer Lopez Reality Show?

Jennifer Lopez and her twins have been big - and adorable - news this Spring, and now it's sounding like we'll get a chance to glimpse the babies on a regular basis from the comfort of our couches. Lopez will be creating and starring in her own reality show for TLC showing her juggling her career and her life as a new mom.

I'm a little surprised J. Lo would take this on - and TLC doesn't seem like her kind of network. Then again, maybe it's all part of separating herself from her old image. Could you see yourself watching her show?

Movies Rock on CBS Tonight

Fashion Rocks brought fashion and music together back in September, and tonight, another CBS special will unite music and the movies. Movies Rock, a two-hour special that begins at 9 p.m. EST and PST tonight, is much like its fashionista cousin, right down to the Conde Nast magazine supplement and star-studded lineup.

I told you a while back about some of the performances, which will feature musicians singing their favorite songs from the movies - Beyonce performing "Over the Rainbow," Carrie Underwood belting "The Sound of Music," and more. There's a big list of other performers, as well, including Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, Fergie, and Elton John.

"Desperate Housewives": Meet the New Neighbors

In true "Desperate Housewives" fashion, the newest family to move to Wisteria Lane is dripping with mystery. Actors Nathan Fillion, Dana Delaney and Lyndsy Fonseca recently chatted with TV Guide about their family, one of two new households on the lane this year. Here's what we learned about their characters:

Katherine Mayfair, Delaney's character, used to live on Wisteria Lane with her daughter, Dylan (Fonseca), and an aunt, but she moved away 12 years ago under - you guessed it - mysterious circumstances. When she returns, she's with her new husband, Adam (Fillion), a gynecologist with an "unsavory" secret in his professional life.
A perfectionist and control freak, Katherine is a rival to Bree; apparently there will literally be a throwdown over lemon meringue pie.
Dylan was once friends with Julie Mayer, but she remembers nothing from that time, and the memory loss leads people to suspect something dark in her past; as a teenager, she's kept on a strict schedule, "almost like a dog."

"Desperate Housewives" is also the latest show to get the music video treatment from ABC, with glam scenes of the original five housewives set to the new Jennifer Lopez song "Mile in These Shoes." Channing Tatum and Columbus Short are signed on to star in an untitled buddy action flick, says Hollywood Reporter.
Instead of Harvey Keitel, Joe Mantegna will replace Mandy Patinkin on "Criminal Minds," Zap2It reports.
"Saturday Night Live" folks Rachel Dratch and Chris Parnell will join the cast of Harold, which includes Nikki Blonski and Ally Sheedy, says ComingSoon.
Billboard is reporting that Jennifer Lopez's next album will be in English, titled Brave, and will be released October 9.
ComingSoon reports that Corey Feldman, Corey Haim and Jamison Newlander will all be in the Lost Boys 2 straight-to-DVD movie.
Fox has purchased "Drop Dead Diva," a drama script about a dead beauty queen whose soul enters the body of an unattractive lawyer, Mediaweek reports.
According to the LA Times, New Line is eager to patch things up with Peter Jackson so he will direct The Hobbit.

El Cantante: Not Entirely Horrible

I walked out of El Cantante having learned a little bit about the life of Hector Lavoe and a little bit about the birth of Salsa music, but not enough about either. To be honest, I was expecting a lot worse and the movie really wasn't completely atrocious. It just wasn't any good. How's that for a rave review?

As one of the few sorry people who actually suffered through Gigli I will say that El Cantante is not nearly as bad as that 2003 monstrosity. That being said, neither Jennifer Lopez or Marc Anthony has the acting ability to carry a movie, especially one that sets out to tell such an intense story. In the end, J Lo's Newyorican Productions' first film is a lengthy music video-like tribute to the biopic, which runs the gamut of cliches but ultimately sheds little new light on the genre. The film is narrated by Jennifer Lopez, who plays Puchi Lavoe, Salsa sensation Hector Lavoe's (Marc Anthony) wife. This should have been an immediate red flag that this movie would be less about Hector's career and more about his relationship with Puchi. The story reads like literally every "Behind The Music" - a quick rise to fame, the drug-induced downfall, a moment of redemption followed by even more downward spiraling. Only El Cantante doesn't have endless interviews with the story's crucial players that help to create a full picture and make the VH1 series so watchable. It only has Puchi.

J Lo's Puchi is supposed to be hard headed and strong, but often came off as shrieky and annoying. At the most emotional moment of the movie, she delivers her ultra dramatic "you can never, ever leave me" speech, but instead of hanging on her every word I just couldn't wait until it was over. Not a very good sign.

As an actor, Marc Anthony was the highlight for me, probably because his character wasn't too far from himself. The movie involved more singing than I expected, which is certainly his strong suit. Marc isn't a drug addict, but he does light up on stage and know what it is like to be a superstar. J Lo, on the other hand, doesn't know what it's really like to play second fiddle to her husband's fame, and it showed.

As I mentioned earlier, one of my biggest qualms with the movie was that it didn't teach me enough about Hector himself and the rise of Salsa music in America. Most of what the movie teaches you about Hector Lavoe you can gather from the preview. In fact, as soon as I got home from the screening, I looked him up on Wikipedia hoping that it would help me put the pieces of his life in logical order.

Perhaps this is what they were going for - to make the movie as chaotic, fragmented and confusing as Hector and Puchi Lavoe's lives were - but even that message didn't come through clear enough. It's unfortunate, because I do think that within El Cantante is a story worth telling, but this movie just didn't do it justice.

Who Should Play the Lead in the Female Scarface?

Variety is reporting today that a director has been named for Queen of the South, a female-led adaptation of Scarface set in Spain. Though casting has not yet begun, three actresses are reportedly circling the juicy role: Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz.
According to the article, the "story revolves around a Mexican woman who escapes to Spain after her drug mule boyfriend is killed, then becomes a drug kingpin and seeks revenge for her boyfriend's murderers."

To me, this sounds awesome. I'm sick of gangster movies relegating women to the roles of backstabbing girlfriends or dim-witted victims. As for the leading lady for Queen, which of these actresses can you see playing the part Al Pacino made so memorable? Who can wield a crazy gun screaming one of my favorite movie lines ever ("Say hullo to my little friend!")?
