Ginnifer Goodwin Showcases Her Engagement Ring at Big Love's Season Five Premiere!

Ginnifer Goodwin accessorized her bright salmon dress with her new engagement ring last night as she celebrated the debut of Big Love's fifth and final season in LA! She posed alongside fiancé Joey Kern but also made time to smile alongside costars Bill Paxton, the beautiful Jeanne Tripplehorn, and a Rodarte-clad Chloë Sevigny - what do you think of Chloë's cutout dress? Chloë's no stranger to showing some strategic skin after her bikini-filled New Year's vacation in Miami. Ginnifer debuted her diamond earlier this week at Nicole Richie's Lucky party, though she and Joey announced their plans to wed just before Christmas. Her happy marriage news was somewhat eclipsed by uproar over her comments about being in Weight Watchers since age 9, though she later clarified her story and said, "I've never had body issues, I've never had an eating disorder. I've never had to go on a diet and that's because of Weight Watchers." The Stars Mingle Around All the Globes Afterparties!

The InStyle afterparty might have been the most star-studded event post-Golden Globes, but the parties spread out around the city by the end of the night. Drew Barrymore brought another very special date - her brand-new statue, which she'll have to return to get engraved - at HBO's event after helping bring the network two Golden Globe wins for Grey Gardens. Entourage costars Emmanuelle Chriqui and newly-single Jerry Ferrara also posed at HBO. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler sat side-by-side during the ceremony and stuck together at the NBC and Focus Features' bash elsewhere in the Beverly Hilton. Ashley Olsen looked so great in bright blue as she met up with her man Justin Bartha. The stars were milling around the big hotel and the city, party hopping throughout the night.

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr hit up the Sunset Towers event where they chatted with one of the night's winners Robert Downey Jr. Reese Witherspoon also slipped into that one still wearing her pretty dress. The Mad Men cast didn't all get to take the stage to accept for the series's win, but they celebrated together at AMC's viewing party. January Jones, who expressed her love for Jersey Shore in the press room, was spotted looking close to Jeremy Piven and perhaps even leaving together. Kevin Bacon was so happy to be nominated on the same night as his wife and as usual the two looked totally smitten all evening long. James Cameron had a lot to say in the press room about how his actors should get more respect for their work in Avatar, which took home best drama, best director and yet another weekend at number one at the box office.

Movie Preview: Crazy on the Outside

I'm actually really curious about Tim Allen's directorial debut, the indie comedy Crazy on the Outside. It's not just the words "director" and "indie" appearing with Allen's name, it's the cast of actors he's assembled that I'm interested in.

Sigourney Weaver and J.K. Simmons play the siblings of Tommy, Allen's character, who has just been released from prison and is trying to settle back into the real world. Plenty of folks pop up to derail him, including Ray Liotta and Julie Bowen. If none of those actors are enticing enough, in saunters Big Love's Jeanne Tripplehorn as Tommy's parole officer and romantic foil. It looks kind of interesting, even if the plot of a guy trying to make good isn't anything new. There's at least one laugh out loud moment from Weaver, who I love seeing in comedic roles.

Sneak Peek at Big Love Season Four!

Police arrests! Covert meetings! Chloe Sevigny screaming! After a vague teaser, we're finally getting an in-depth look at the new season of Big Love, and it's a nail-biter.

Power and corruption appear to be two big themes, with Bill (Bill Paxton) getting even more ambitious with a run for state Senate. Meanwhile, Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) is throwing her own weight around with her growing career as a TV shopping channel host, and Nicki is questioning her feelings for Bill. We already heard that Amanda Seyfried is moving on from her role as Bill's eldest, and the preview hints at Sarah's departure - though we don't see much of the other kids. There are also the typical conflicts with the compound, but mostly I'm just curious if we're going to see Bill in handcuffs by the end of this season.

Drew Isn't Afraid of Red Carpet Annihilation at Grey Gardens

Drew Barrymore perfectly looked the part at the premiere of Grey Gardens in NYC last night. She was joined by costars Jessica Lange - who looked great after her recent fall - and Jeanne Tripplehorn. It was a rainy night in Manhattan but the HBO movie's stars smiled big on the red carpet. Drew Barrymore's maybe on-again boyfriend and definitely repeat costar Justin Long also came out to support the film. On the red carpet Drew talked about taking on the role and how she related to her character:

On her red carpet fashion: "People get annihilated if people don’t like what they’re wearing, but then they dress plain to not get annihilated and then that’s boring. So I don’t care what people say I want to have fun with fashion."
On playing Little Edie: "I only care about if she thinks that I did right by her. And I lived and breathed her for three months, I cut off myself from the rest of the world to literally understand really being isolated in life and not live in a world with technology and to not have friends and family in abundance around me and I just kept thinking, 'I just want to honor you, I just want to honor you, I just want to honor you.'"
On missing playing the part: "The whole thing was challenging and scary. I’ve never been so terrified in my life [as when I was] pulling off Little Edie. . . I think one of my favorite things about her is her - and maybe it’s a character flaw, but I find it wonderful - is that she’s not afraid to show her emotions. She’s not afraid to be childlike. She’s not afraid to dance around a room. She’s not afraid to be angry. She’s not afraid to be vulnerable and quiet and calm and sad and to have that level of range as a human being I just find that rather interesting."

HBO Renews Its Vows With Big Love

Big news for Big Love: The polygamy drama will be back next year for a fourth season! HBO announced the renewal with a statement saying, "The series keeps getting better and better."

One thing that wasn't getting better, at least earlier this season, was the ratings - the show's season three premiere (which came after a long break caused in large part by the writers' strike) drew just 1.2 million viewers. But The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show's grown in the ratings each week since then, and the show's currently averaging about 5 million viewers a week once all the repeat airings are taken into account.

The show's excited co-creators gave E! a statement celebrating the good news, making the following promise to fans:

As season three continues they'll forget about the time they waited and get caught up in our best season ever. And we also swear we won't make them wait as long next year.

Well, that sounds promising. Tell me: Are you excited that there's more Big Love on the way in 2010?

First Look: Big Love Season Three

It's been such a long wait for the third season of Big Love. Thanks to the writers' strike, the HBO drama won't return till January - almost 18 months after it was last on TV.

But there are finally some real signs that we're getting close to the premiere, including the first couple of promos that HBO's rolled out over the past week or so. The first is creepy and moody; there's no dialogue, just the haunting sounds of the Black Keys song "Lies" while some seriously dark things take place in the brief video clips. The second includes interviews with several cast members talking about how the show has been "amped up" for the third season. Here's hoping that whatever we see in January makes this long wait worthwhile. Movie Preview: Winged Creatures

I watched the trailer for Winged Creatures before I knew the full cast list. I already knew that it included Forrest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson and was surprised to find a whole slew of other amazing actors involved, including Jackie Earle Haley, Guy Pearce, Kate Beckinsale, and Big Love's Jeanne Tripplehorn. In addition, there's Dakota Fanning as a real, live teenager - not a precocious little kid.

The plot reminds me a little bit of that ill-fated TV show The Nine (which probably should have just been a movie in the first place): "A group of strangers form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a Los Angeles diner."

The whole look and feel of the film is eerie, moving, and quite sad, not unlike the tone of Mystic River (but slightly less dark). There doesn't appear to be a release date yet for Winged Creatures, but I hope it comes out soon. To check out the trailer,

TV Tonight: Big Love, From the Beginning

HBO was kind enough to fill the Big Love-sized hole in my heart with a recap video a few weeks back. But if you'd rather catch up on the show's first two seasons the old-fashioned way, it will be possible starting tonight.

HBO2 will air one episode from the series in order for the next 24 Saturdays, starting at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT tonight. It's the first time I can remember that HBO has shown the series in its entirety, and it's a great opportunity to meet the Henricksons if you've yet to make their acquaintance.

Catch Up on Big Love in Four Minutes

This "Big Love in Four Minutes" video HBO just put together makes me a little sad, because it's still going to be a long, long wait to see the show's third season. Thanks to the writers' strike, the series - which should have been on right now - won't be seen again till January 2009.

The good news is, that should give anyone who hasn't seen the first two seasons of the drama plenty of time to get caught up the old-fashioned way, by renting DVDs or checking out episodes On Demand. But if you're just not sure you want to commit, this four-minute summary is a pretty good one, with all the typical dry humor these ". . . in x minutes" videos tend to have. (I especially like the little "bleeeep" noise that keeps recurring when they talk about video poker.)

At least I'll be able to get a fix of some of the actors in other roles before January - Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia and Ginnifer Goodwin in He's Just Not That Into You. For now, though, it's just good to see Bill and his wives together, however briefly. To check out the video, just
