Jay-Z Breaks Elvis Presley's Number One Record

Not even Kanye or Lil Mama can overshadow Jay-Z's latest act: he has beaten Elvis Presley for the most number one records by a solo artist.

His latest album, the Blueprint #3, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, making it his 11th album to go straight to the top spot (his first was 1998's "Vol. 2 . . . Hard Knock Life"). Two songs from the album, "Empire State of Mind" and "Young Forever," also debuted in Billboard's Hot 100. The man has had a good run and shows no signs of slowing down; check out some other chart-toppers in my best of Jay-Z playlist.

So if Jay-Z now holds the record for most number ones as a solo act, who has the record overall? Those new additions to Rock Band, The Beatles.

We've already talked about the moonman winners at last night's MTV VMAs and the A-list beauty and fashion looks that were on the red carpet, but what did you think of the performances?

I know some of you were unsure about tuning in this year, but I'm so glad I did, if for no other reason than to see Janet Jackson perform "Scream" as a tribute to Michael. Lady Gaga was over-the-top as always with her bloody rendition of "Paparazzi," and Pink cranked it up a notch with an actual high-wire acrobatic act. And since Jay-Z has been at the forefront of my mind lately, you know I was psyched to see him close out the show with Alicia Keys belting it out at the piano.

So many great artists, so hard to choose! Which one was your favorite?

It's Hova's homecoming: his Blueprint 3 is available everywhere today (it was hustled out Tuesday, but lagged on some outlets), and tonight you can watch Jay-Z's benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, streamed on Fuse at 9 p.m. EDT live from NYC.

It's also the eighth anniversary of the first Blueprint album, and dude is headlining the VMAs! So as a tribute to the very busy man, I've put together a playlist of my favorite Jay-Z songs from over the years.

What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download.

Return of the King: The new Jay-Z album, The Blueprint 3, was supposed to be released on Friday but a leak prompted a last minute to move to today (which is why it may not be showing up on iTunes yet). The earlier release date is good news for fans, because this album is amazing. I've been listening to it nonstop, and during my first listen, I was surprised at how each song seemed to just get better and more epic.

I realize I'm gushing, so let me back it up: instant hits "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys and "So Ambitious" with Pharrell are soulful groovers, while "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)" and "On To the Next One" reassert Jay's self-proclaimed reputation as the Best Rapper Alive. (Update: the album is available to buy and stream on Rhapsody right now).

Go independent: Yo La Tengo's latest album, Popular Songs, promises some new sounds from the moody band, and I'd already gotten into preview song "Periodically Double or Triple". It's not the only upbeat track that hooked me; I want to listen to "Nothing to Hide" on repeat. Finally, the bonus track is a Carole King cover, "You've Got a Friend", and provides that slow, sweetly haunting feeling Yo La Tengo is known for.

Let's jam: I know there's still a lot of you Phish-heads out there, and a listen to their newest, Joy, transports me back to my college days. I'm instantly sucked in by the lively Ocelot, and it's hard to not to comply with the lyrics of the appropriately named title track "Joy": "we want you to be happy". Oh, and don't worry, the band hasn't lost its affinity for epically long songs - there's a thirteen minute track, "Time Turns Elastic".

Jay-Z + Radiohead = Jaydiohead

Ever since I stumbled across Jaydiohead this morning my productivity level has gone down a bit. However, lucky for me, my job is such that listening to Jaydiohead and being productive go hand in hand. But if this isn't the case for you, be warned. You may find yourself addicted.

Jaydiohead is (you might have guessed) the blending of Jay-Z and Radiohead, and it's just one of those combinations that feels so right. I probably never would have thunk it but now that it exists, I can't get enough. If you're already a fan of Radiohead, it's cool to hear the familiar tunes used in this new way (like my favorite track, "No Karma" which uses parts of Radiohead's "Karma Police").
